Tour Overview

: Known as the "Coca-Cola" route, the Marangu route is a classic trek on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the oldest, most well established route. Many favor the Marangu route because it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope. It is also the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations. The minimum days required for this route is five, although the probability of successfully reaching the top in that time period is quite low. Spending an extra acclimatization day on the mountain is highly recommended when climbing Kilimanjaro using the Marangu route. So we request you to take at list six days. However, despite its immense popularity, we avoid leading climbs on the Marangu route. The route has the least scenic variety of all the routes because the ascent and descent are done on the same path and it is the most crowded route for that reason. Marangu is favored only during the rainy season, where the hut accommodations are preferred over wet ground, or for those who only have five days to climb Kilimanjaro.

After 3-4 hours of ascending, you will reach the Mandara Hut (2700m). Each hut has 6-8 sleeping bunks (sleeps 60 hikers total) with solar generated lighting. Next to the central hut there are flush toilets. The porters, who arrive at the campsite before the clients, will boil water for drinking and washing. The chef will prepare a snack then dinner for the clients. At nighttime, mountain temperatures may drop to freezing so be prepared!

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

At Horombo Hut, you will spend the day allowing your body to acclimate to high altitude. You will have the option of doing a day hike to Mawenzi Hut (4600m) for further acclimatization with your guide. The lower route (located to the left of the fork) is the more popular route because it is a shorter hiking distance (1 hour shorter).
Kibo Hut is located in the Saddle, which refers to the area located between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo in an alpine desert. There is no water at this camp, but hikers can buy mineral water and soft drinks at the camp office. An early dinner will be served so hikers can rest before attempting the summit the same night. Your guide will wake you around 23:30 for tea and biscuits. You will then begin your summit attempt. The trail is rocky up to Hans Meyer Cave (5150m). You continue your ascent to Gillman’s point (5681m). Reaching this section is an impressive achievement as the trail is steep, rocky, and at high altitude. Gillman’s is located on the crater rim. From this point, you will usually experience a snow covered trail until you reach the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m). Reaching the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro is a lifetime accomplishment! You will be able to spend a short time on the summit taking photographs and drinking tea before the descent to Barafu begins. The hike down to Kibo Hut takes about 3 hours.

hiking to Kilimanjaro summit

07-Dec-2022

Jul 2022 • Couples Well done! Excellent organisation of climbing: scheduled and thoughtful every step. The caring about clients is full of attention, respect, no need to ask twice. The most tough days of summit push and way down we've been surrounded by tender care, waking up to an encouraging song of our cheerful waiter at 23.00 to get the summit with it and descent successfully! The guides are experienced, control your health condition on the route. We have highly appreciated the work of all team as we know what it is to organise a successful climbing and hiking in mountains doing it ourselves with years of experience. Asanti!

6 Days Marangu Route

07-oct-022

6 Days Marangu Route I did the Marangu Route with African Traces at the end of December 2020. For me the most important thing in the experience was the safety of my self and my team, what i can say its that my guide was checking up on me every hour and at the beginning and the end of every day we did a-lot of checks and test with a form which gave me a-lot of confidence for my situation. The company is amazing, Marko the owner was honest with me all the way so i also went with him to the Safari. At the Mountuin i had great food, always drinking water and they always took care of me all the way with whatever i need, without the guide from African Traces who pushed me forward at any time needed I'm not sure if i could make the last night. If u want to hear more feel free to ask Marko my phone number (i rather not leave it here 😂) I hope u all have a great Climbing and make the right decision!

Sep 2021 A friend of mine connected me with African Traces and Jackson was the one that I started to deal with. We agreed to do the route Machame in 6 days, I went to their office in Moshi, paid them by cash and all was sorted. They came to my accommodation, checked all my gears and brought me to rent what I needed for the trek. I was the only client and my team had 6 Tanzanians working for my tour (1 mountain guide / 1 cook / 4 porters). Abraham was my guide. He has a lot of experience with Kilimanjaro and we had a great time going up and down the mountain. The food was really good! A lot of food in every single meal. And also they were there to help me with whatever I needed. I highly recommend you to do your Kilimanjaro tour with them. Make sure to see how much you have to give for tips, the guys who will be working for you, will be doing a really hard job, so they really deserve a good tip! That's it! Enjoy Tanzania guys!

Jan 2022 • Couples We booked the Kilimanjaro climbing trek with African Traces after excellent experience we had in the safari tour (also highly recommended), and they exceeded our expectations. The team was very professional! The organisation, information, food and energy were superb! We felt the entire time safe in the hands of a skilled and experienced team, who checked our heart rate, oxygen level and more every morning and evening, and made sure we have the right gear for the trek.
