Tour Overview

A barrier of upward-pointing spears for the Zulu name “Quathlamba”, describes the craggy pinnacles that form the most spectacular part of the Great Escarpment of Southern Africa’s major watershed. The name “Drakensberg” derives from Dutch, meaning “mountain of the dragon”, for the jagged peaks seem like a natural domain for these fabled creatures. Explore the intriguing history of the bygone battlefields, while enjoying spectacular wildlife scenery.

They decided to pack-up their worldly goods load them onto covered wagons and head into the largely unknown interior of South Africa. Thus began in 1836 the exodus that would be recorded by history as ‘The Great Trek’! The north, west and eastward movement of this exodus of Trekkers, who became known as Voortrekkers inevitably led to conflict with the indigenous peoples who inhabited the hinterland. Trek leader Piet Retief and his party were killed at King Dingane’s capital of Mgungundlovu in February 1838…”. Lunch is enjoyed en route, and we spend our last night at The Lapha in Dundee (or similar).

Wonderful experience

24-Nov-2020

Thank you Jakes at Amantungulu Tours for the wonderful experience we enjoyed in South Africa. The Kwa Zulu Natal tour was very well organized and exceeded our expectations. We couldn’t have asked for anything more. So much thought was put in to the planning, from the accommodation, tours, transfers, which was a very thoughtful and appreciated addition to the tour – overseas guests will find this really useful. The travel, accommodation and tours were excellent, and we still had the flexibility to change plans along the way. Not just a tour guide, we also thoroughly enjoyed your company. Nothing is too much trouble – as the website says, “Always the best for you”. We certainly had the best time!

Drakensberge and Battlefields

25-Nov-2020

A wonderful tour of the Boer and Zulu Battlefields with a visit to the Drakensbergs a highlight. Though we covered over 1700 km in our 6 days, we were never conscious of the distance, as there was always so much to experience along the way ! Simon, our personal guide, was always thoughtful and attentive to our needs and wishes: in fact we were thoroughly spoilt ! A very high recommendation to anyone with an interest in 19th century South African history. Special mention must also go to the Ndaka Game Reserve with its thoughtful approach when viewing wildlife. Probably one of the most intimate and professional lodges we have experienced. Thank you Jakes for such a memorable trip
