Tour Overview

This is the most popular, shortest and easiest way to the summit also known as the COCA COLA ROUTE. Total climbing days: 6. This can be reduced to 5 days. No technical skills are required and the only route with minimum 5 days trek according to the KINAPA law. It's the only trail which has huts (sharing) along its route with solar lights and all the necessities. This six day trek, does have an option of acclimatization by climbing high at Zebra rock and sleep low at Horombo Hut which increases your chances of success to the summit. The Marangu Route is the oldest on Kilimanjaro and is also one of the most popular — mainly because it is the only route on the mountain that has huts provided for hikers. There are 60 bunk beds each at Mandara and Kibo Huts, and 120 bunk beds at Horombo Hut.

You will have a light snack and rest in the early evening before waking up around midnight for your final ascent: going is slow.

Terrain: shale and rocky; Arctic Desert

Day 6 : Horombo Hut To The Summit Via Gilman's Point
Location: Gilman's Point
Accommodation: Hostel
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Around midnight, you are gently awakened to begin your final ascent. We ascend in the darkness for about 4 hours while taking frequent, short, breaks. The going is very slow, a snail’s pace! The locals will say ‘pole, pole’ (pronounced polay) which is Swahili for slow, slow. At Gilman’s point (5,670m/18,600 ft (ca. 5,669 m)), you will see the sun coming up over Africa — probably the most rewarding sunrise you will ever see! Finally, we arrive at Uhuru Peak(5895m)- the highest point on Kibo — aka Mount Kilimanjaro and only 10,000 ft (ca. 3 km) less than Everest! After a welcome photo opp we start our descent the same way to Kibo Hut for a short rest and then continue down to Horombo Hut(3720m). Later that evening, we get our well-earned rest and last dinner on Kilimanjaro.
Uhuru Peak Elevation: 19,341 ft (ca. 6 kilometres);
Distance ascent: 4 miles (ca. 6,437 m);
Trekking Time: 6-8 hours;
Terrain: shale and rocky; Arctic Desert;

Marangu Route

When it comes to mountaineering, safety is very critical. In this regard, one of the mountaineering agencies I am happy to recommend is Baba Kilimanjaro. During our hike, its caretakers paid extreme attention to our safety. They offered to carry our weighty bags! This then makes for an effortless reach to the respective camps along the way up. At the top, a collection of gorgeously-wooden and well-insulated huts should help warm the coldest of bodies in this dropping temperature. The height of the trees lessens as you gain altitude and the well maintained footpath should make for a less challenging manoeuvre. Throughout our five-day hike, Alex the team leader was so encouraging and patient. He availed us additional warm gear ahead of our ascent to Uhuru peak, the final lap of the hike. Considering how steep its gradient is, the departure is often planned for 4 am. That way, you can make it to your destination before the sun gets unbearably hot.

I had Alex as the best support ever who made sure none of the team gives up until we reached the peak. Honestly at some point we all gave up but his word was... “we must win this together, it can't win us”. Alas, this made us focus until we reached the peak in celebrations and jubilations, did I mention he has an amazing team? Yes he has!
