Day 1: Naples (Italy)

Location: Metropolitan City of Naples

Day 2: Naples – Pompeii – Santa Maria Di Castellabate

Location: Metropolitan City of Naples

Accommodation: Grand Hotel Santa Maria (or similar)

Meals Included: Breakfast

This morning will begin with a walking tour of Naples’ historic centre. A local guide will lead us into the labyrinthine of streets in search of the Cappella Sansevero – the home of the Veiled Christ, one of the finest sculptures in the world. Then, we’ll be transported back in time with a visit to one of the world’s most famous archaeological wonders: Pompeii. After spending some time exploring this fascinating site with a local guide, we’ll continue to the picturesque seaside town of Santa Maria di Castellabate – where we’ll have the evening to spend at our leisure.

Day 3: Santa Maria Di Castellabate – Minori

Location: Santa Maria di Castellabate

Accommodation: The Minori Palace Hotel (or similar)

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

This morning, we’ll be welcomed at a local farm – where we’ll view the resident buffaloes and be lucky enough to observe the preparation of light, fresh mozzarella. We’ll then take a guided tour of Paestum – home to three of the world’s best-preserved Greek temples. Visiting the magnificent temples, Roman Forum and the Ampitheatre, we’ll uncover the enthralling history of this glorious archaeological site with a local guide. Then? A kitchen piled high with fresh local produce awaits us back at the farm. Time for a cooking lesson! Our hard work will be rewarded as we savour our own creations at lunch with the host family. Today’s ventures will end in quaint Minori, our base for the next five days.

Day 4: Minori – Ravello And Tramonti – Minori

Location: Minori

Accommodation: The Minori Palace Hotel (or similar)

Meals Included: Breakfast

Today’s first stop is the hilltop town of Ravello – where we’ll visit the grand Villa Rufolo and the splendid Villa Cimbrone. Then: we’ll move on to a local lemon grove for an afternoon with a zesty twist. Amalfi is famous for its succulent and fragrant lemons, so there is no better place to dive into a tasting of limoncello and lemon-infused local specialties. Back in Minori, the evening is yours to spend at your leisure. More relaxed than its glitzy cousins, Amalfi and Positano, Minori’s small-town grace and atmospheric seafront will undoubtedly capture your heart.

Day 5: Minori – Amalfi And Positano – Minori

Location: Amalfi

Accommodation: The Minori Palace Hotel (or similar)

Meals Included: Breakfast

The dramatically set cliffside town of Amalfi is nothing short of magnificent. After wandering the sun-filled piazzas and pretty beachside on an orientation tour, we’ll venture onwards to the blissful town of Positano. Enjoy some free time here to explore the picture-perfect cascade of terracotta houses, lively restaurants and alluring boutique storefronts, before returning to Minori. We’ll spend the afternoon learning the intricacies of ceramic decorating from a local artisan. Then, will have plenty of time to enjoy Minori’s coastal charms at our leisure.

Day 6: Minori – Capri – Minori

Location: Capri

Accommodation: The Minori Palace Hotel (or similar)

Meals Included: Breakfast

A tour highlight beckons today! After breakfast, we’ll take a short ferry across to the picturesque island of Capri and enjoy a ride on the charming funicular railway – which will whisk us away from the port and into Capri town’s elegant piazza. We’ll orientate ourselves around the village – strolling through the lanes of chic cafes and exclusive boutiques, before relishing in some free time to explore at our own pace. Upon returning to Minori later this afternoon – we’ll have a free evening to indulge in a little dolce vita. We recommend finding a restaurant in town and sampling the local specialty of scialatielli – a thick pasta with a heritage dating back to medieval times.

Day 7: Minori – Maiori, Cetara And Vietri Sul Mare – Minori

Location: Minori

Accommodation: The Minori Palace Hotel (or similar)

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Today’s agenda will see us explore some hidden gems of the Amalfi Coast. First: Maiori – a beautiful village that is home to the largest beach in the area and an array of grand historical buildings, including the church of Santa Maria a Mare. We’ll continue the adventure with a stop at the fishing village of Cetara before landing in Vietri sul Mare – a town famous for its hand-painted, vividly coloured ceramics. After a full day of exploring, we’ll enjoy some free time back in Minori. And tonight? We’ll come together and clink glasses over a delicious farewell dinner.

Day 8: Minori – Palace Of Caserta And Sant’Agata De’ Goti – Naples

Location: Metropolitan City of Naples

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

For the final day of our tour, we’ll say goodbye to the Amalfi Coast and move on to the 18th-century Royal Palace of Caserta – an exquisite example of the Italian Baroque period. Then: from the royal to the rustic. Our next stop will be a farmhouse in Sant’Agata de’ Goti, where we’ll taste fabulous Falanghina wines produced from black grapes grown in the Campania region. ANZAC on the Western Front I...

13-Sep-2024

ANZAC on the Western Front I highly recommend this tour for anyone who is interested in the history of WW1; whether a history buff or for those, like myself, who had a basic general knowledge. The information is presented with in-depth detail and immersive style by visiting and walking the battlefields. For me, this provided stark clarity of what transpired and has piqued a curiosity to learn more. Steve, our tour guide of many years experience in leading this tour and of studying the war, was very keen to share his encyclopaedic knowledge. The tour invited us to submit any personal requests and Steve went above and beyond to ensure these were met. It was incredibly moving to watch some of our tour members laying a poppy, a cross or even a cigarette at the grave of a fallen relative. It had a profound impact on myself when I walked on the Bullecourt battlefield where my Grandfather had fought and was wounded. After Steve explained so eloquently the futility and carnage of the battle I had a greater understanding of m age as he was then. There is so much ground to cover on this tour, so be prepared for full days. The accommodation provided an authentic experience. As you would expect the hotels used are older buildings, in-fact on our first night in Lille the hotel had been used by the troops in WW1. While the accommodation was a little quirky they were always very clean with friendly and helpful staff. I would like to thank Steve for bringing together such a diverse group with his humour and easygoing manner. And, I need to acknowledge, his endless patience. We all became a tight knit group, looking out for each other and at times being asked, jokingly, to tone it down at one of our pre-dinner drinks. I honestly don’t know how we had the energy, but obviously enjoyed each other’s company. An absolutely fabulous trip!

Backroads is a premium travel/adventure company. They provide structure but also promote making the journey your own. Guides highly trained and totally focused on making each person’s experience safe, fun and memorable. They seek out the best opportunities to play hard and rest well. Hands down the best tour company I have experienced.

ANZACs On The Western Front...

ANZACs On The Western Front with Steve Western. We did this tour in 2018 and it was way beyond expectations. We visited every major battlefield and also experienced some spectacular accommodation along the way. Steve's knowledge is exceptional and he was very engaging, prepared to discuss and explain various aspects of the war for the ANZACs. The enormity of the challenges faced is well communicated and at various sites the grief at the appalling losses was very real. This tour is so good I intend doing it again once a couple of mates retire.

June 2024 Dalmation Coast tour...

06-Aug-2024

June 2024 Dalmation Coast tour of Croatia and Montenegro was excellent with an interesting and very comfortable range of accommodation and quality sites and experiences. Excellent tour leader, driver and comfortable bus. In contrast, the Eastern Europe tour a week later was very disappointing. No where near the quality of accommodation, meals and experiences eg no museums open during our one day in Krakow and no tour of the ghetto. Also totally inadequate legroom in bus, too much travelling and missed opportunities. Terrible organised meals. Excellent tour leader and driver. Suggest Backroads reassess this tour as our two experiences were nothing alike.

Norway Fjords & Glaciers was...

12-Jul-2024

Norway Fjords & Glaciers was a terrible experience from start to finish. Driver & guide were definitely not local & neither were knowledgeable about the destination. Driver was erratic & too fast for such treacherous mountain roads. Guide was disorganised & unable to answer basic questions about Norwegian history. Dietary needs were not met and even accessing somewhere to eat was problematic. Accommodation was clean but basic & often very remote. Avoid this tour, Norway is far better experienced from the water.
