Tour Overview

The Via Francigena is one of Europe's great walks that pilgrims have been undertaking since the 8th century. Our journey begins in the Alpine mountain valley of Susa, enters the beautiful city of Turin and crosses the Po Valley (Pianura Padana) rice fields. We then climb over the Apennines and descend into the walled city of Lucca. From here we enjoy the unique landscape of Tuscany, its medieval hilltop towns, San Gimignano, Siena and Montalcino, and stroll through picturesque vineyards, olive groves and cypress avenues. We climb Monte Amiata and head to Rome across the magical Val di Tuscia, enjoy breathtaking views of the Bolsena Lake and sojourn in the ancient papal city of Viterbo. Through classic Italian landscapes, visiting towns and villages that are rich in culture and artistic treasure. You'll be reminded of the route's historic past with many references to the thousands upon thousands of pilgrims who walked the same routes in the Middle Ages to Rome. Our journey ends as we enter Rome, cross the gates of the Vatican City, and gaze at the Basilica of Saint Peter.

Because our hotel prices are based on double/twin bedrooms, we must charge a single supplement to an individual traveller using a private room on a trip. The trip was extremely well organized, and whenever there needed to be a change (e.g. due to weather), the change was made seamlessly. The Via Francigena of course, is beautiful. The guides' selections were perfect. We got a good glimpse of the beauty of the scenery, food, culture and people.

The Via Francigena itinerary was wonderful with so much variety, a perfect balance of walks with shorter, more relaxed days to more demanding days. As usual the lunches were something we looked forward to every day and we were never disappointed — thank you so much Simona. The accommodation was up to the usual high standard with some surprises such as the Residenza Torre di San Martino and the hot spa at Ca del Moro Resort Pontremoli. A perfect remedy for some tired bodies. It is always disappointing to have to finish a tour with you all but the anticipation of our next tour with you keeps us smiling. “This was a fabulous walk, very well researched. The guides, Antonio and Simona chose the best parts for us to walk, enough to make us feel we?d done enough to deserve our delicious meals. The scenery was great, and coming across Simona with her amazing lunches after the morning walk was perfect. We appreciated the local guides we often had for city walks; Simona gave us a great tour of Rome. We stayed at lovely hotels each night including a hot spar resort near Siena. Special surprises included a Puccini concert and a Roman meal. Thanks to Antonio, Simona, Pino, Caroline and Alessandro!”
