Our Local Insider will be there to greet you and will accompany the group throughout the trip. Meet your fellow travellers at 5pm over a welcome drink and an orientation talk on northern Thailand, highlighting any cultural dos and don’ts. As the former capital of the Lanna Kingdom, Chiang Mai has a rich cultural heritage distinct from the cities in the south. Get to know the group over dinner, followed by a traditional Lanna show.

Kick off your first full day in Chiang Mai with a walking tour, exploring the alleyways and temples of the Old Town. Home to many creative types, it’s no wonder the city is alive with art. After lunch, hop on a bicycle to tour the street art and food. Lanna cuisine is a medley of hot, salty and sour flavours. Must-try delicacies include khao soi, coconut curry noodle soup, and sai oua, spiced pork sausage. Regroup at the hotel for an evening briefing on your epic road trip, which starts tomorrow.

Day 3 : Kick-Start The Road Trip And Climb The Sticky Waterfall

Location: Pai

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Montis Resort

Meals Included: Breakfast

Rise and shine with a robust cup of local joe before hitting the road to Pai. Located three hours from Chiang Mai, this dreamy town is the gateway to beautiful Mae Hong Son province but is a charmer in its own right. En route, you’ll be dropped off at the unusual Bua Tong Sticky Waterfall. You can easily scramble up the cascade, thanks to the limestone, which makes the rocks grippy rather than slippery. Come evening, bed down at your resort in Pai.

Activities included:

Bua Tong Sticky Waterfall

Day 4 : Swim Under A Waterfall And Explore The Craggy Pai Canyon

Location: Pai

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Montis Resort

After a swim in the clear waters, head to the nearby Kho Kuu So Bridge. This bamboo bridge stretches across large paddies, offering panoramic views. Next, it’s on to the Pai Land Split, a vast gorge created by an earthquake in 2008; enjoy a juice here while swinging in a hammock. You'll be heading underground this morning to Tham Lod Cave, one of the largest and most impressive in the country. As you make your way through the cavern on a raft, you’ll feel like Indiana Jones on a mission – watch out for the bats! Next stop: Ngam Hot Springs. Lower yourself into the therapeutic waters and any tension in your muscles will melt away. It’s time to leave Pai and make the 2.5hr journey inland to Mae Hong Son, where you’ll have the day at leisure in your hotel in the mountains. Take a dip in the pool or enjoy lounging in the sun with a fruit shake. Once you’ve snapped the requisite pictures, make your way back to the hotel for cocktails at the bar.

Optional activities:

Mae Hong Son hike

Day 7 : Embark On A Jungle Trek In Mae Hong Son

Enjoy a lazy breakfast this morning at the hotel. Today, you’ll embark on a one-day jungle trek around the hills of Mae Hong Son. Starting from the hotel, you’ll stomp uphill through the lush vegetation, stopping at waterfalls along the way. Refuel over a picnic lunch – you might even be able to spot the craggy mountainous border with Myanmar in the distance. Wend your way through the palms and rubber trees, back to the hotel. Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

Today, you'll continue the journey southwards to Doi Inthanon, the highest mountain in Thailand at 2,565m (8,415ft), but it's actually a relatively easy hike to the top. Don't overdo it, though, as you need to save your energy for the sunrise trek tomorrow. Check in at the hotel, where you’ll be served a traditional Thai tasting feast for lunch. Expect local delicacies such as nam phrik ong (pork and tomato chilli served with deep-fried pork crackling) alongside khao niaow (sticky rice). There’s an optional afternoon waterfall tour, or you can unwind by the outdoor pool. Spend the evening as you like.

Day 9 : Summit Doi Inthanon And Stop At An Elephant Sanctuary

Location: Elephant Nature Park, Chiang Mai

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Set your alarm for 4am – it’s an early start for a sunrise hike to the summit of Doi Inthanon. Watch the sun break through the clouds before heading back to the hotel for breakfast. Return to Chiang Mai, but not before a stop at the Elephant Nature Park, a rescue centre that provides a safe space for former working elephants to live out their golden years. You'll feed, trek and bathe these giant mammals before hitting the road once more. Top off the trip with a farewell dinner at a riverside restaurant in Chiang Mai.

Activities included:

Sunrise hike up Doi Inthanon
Elephant sanctuary visit
Farewell dinner

Day 10 : Depart From Chiang Mai

You can change the date of your tour up to 60 days prior to departure and cancel at any time, although cancellation conditions may apply.

However, most of the time it is possible to pay a supplement for your own room. Please ask your Travel Expert for more information.

  • What kind of transport do you use on your trips?

We use a mix of public and private transport on our trips, but usually a small and comfortable minibus, so we can access more remote destinations that larger groups can’t get to.

  • Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Yes - all travellers must have travel insurance before they join one of our trips. You are strongly advised to take out your policy at the time of booking to protect your holiday payments in the event of cancellation.

  • Are airport transfers included?

Some of our trips do not include airport transfers, so we recommend customers either take public transport or a taxi. However, if you would like us to arrange a private transfer please ask one of our travel experts who can arrange this for you.

  • How many meals are included?

Breakfast is included daily and then depending on your itinerary, some lunches and dinners. This is clearly indicated in the trip details or ask your Travel Expert to confirm.

  • Will there always be a guide on the trip?

Yes, call or email one of our Travel Experts who will be able to add accommodation to your booking.

  • What is not included in the trip?

We don’t include the following in our trips: insurance (however you must have insurance to travel on one of our trips), flights, tips for local guides, optional activities and other meals and services not mentioned in your itinerary.

  • Is there any age limit on the Trips?

You must be 25 or over to travel on our trips, however there is no upper age limit. You just need a sense of adventure.

  • When will I know if my trip is guaranteed?

We usually wait until we have a few travellers booked on a trip before we guarantee it will run. The latest we will guarantee a trip is 60 days ahead of departure, often it will be long before.

  • Do I need any vaccinations?

As a tour operator we are unable to give medical advice, however we suggest you contact your doctor, a professional medical travel clinic or check out the World Health Organisation website for more details.

  • How much money should I bring?

This will depend on how long your trip is, your destination and how much you intend to spend on personal expenses and any meals that aren’t included. It is a good idea to check out the cost of a local lunch and dinner in your destination before you travel.

  • What visas do I need?

Depending on your passport and your destination, you may need a visa to travel on one of our trips. It is up to you to ensure you have any and all necessary visas before you travel. We recommend you check with a specialist visa agency at least 6 weeks before you travel.

  • I booked but cannot travel anymore. What are the amendments and cancellation options?

We understand plans can change and that’s why we offer flexible booking conditions. You can change or cancel your booking at any time up to 56 days prior to departure and receive a full refund of any funds you have already paid towards your trip.

  • Do I have to make full payment at the time of booking?

You do not have to make full payment at the time of booking. We only require a small, fully refundable deposit of $100 to secure your spot on the trip. Full payment is due at the latest 56 days prior to departure.

  • Do I have to take part in all the activities? Will there be free time on my trip?

The amount of free time varies per trip. Please enquire with our travel experts to get a proper understanding on the amount of free time on the trips you are interested in. You do not have to take part in all activities but we strongly encourage you to do so! We have carefully crafted each trip to show you the best of every destination, so you’d be missing out! Also taking part in activities is a great way to get to know your travel companions and make new friends. Nothing like a positive and supportive group environment to venture outside of your comfort zone and surprise yourself!

  • What is a Local Insider?

We believe there’s no better way to discover a new place and a new culture than by experiencing it through the eyes and experience of a local. That’s why we only work with local guides - whom we name our Local Insiders. They know their region inside out and have a passion for sharing it with travellers. All our Local Insiders have years of experience guiding and speak English. Importantly, they like to travel the way we like it too: away from crowds, tourist traps and queues. Tropical Northern Thailand - A Vacation of a Lifetime!

06-Dec-2023

I’d never imagined that I was going to have way too much fun exploring, seeing, learning your beautiful country, Thailand, with an amazing local guide Taew! I cannot express in enough words how much I have come to love your country and gained more kindness and gracefulness from meeting Thai People and other tourists here and experiencing life through my solo adventurous trip… As I was drawn to Tropical Northern Thailand Itinerary, I most certainly fell in love with the Mountains, Jungles, Waterfalls, Authentic Thai Food, Foot Massages and loving & always smiling Thai People…❤️ As I sit down to pen my words for this special trip… my heart is full of love, generosity, humility and gratefulness…🫶🏼 To my fellow travelers: I would definitely recommend booking trips through the culture trip in future.. my experience with everything from booking this trip to arriving there, my accommodations and airport pick up/drop-off and any questions I had were happily answered in detailed. Katie and Shelby were just fantastic on delivering all of my queries after and before I booked this Northern Thailand trip! Definitely, pack light, take more of hiking clothes( shorts & tshirts), bathing suits/bikinis, 3/4 nice dresses, (weather was in 80s and 90s F mid November) one extra pair of shoes that will get wet when you hike the sticky waterfall in Pai, make sure to wear tshirt/dress with sleeves or cover your shoulders when you visit the temples and pagodas and little below knee length at least pants/skirts/dress. Loved eating local food there! Khao soi is my favorite northern Thai food, that it is a must! Def, massages were just so amazing and relaxing, I miss it a lot!! Also, going to Pai, from Chiang Mai, the roads are super windy… if you’re someone who gets sick from it make sure you carry Dramamine (vertigo medicine). Those were some sharp and crazy turns on the mountains .. but the views are to just die for!!!! Mountains all around me was just something!! Taew, you’re an absolute gem that I got lucky to have met you and gotten to know you on a personal level.. You are so knowledgeable, personable, flexible, kind, caring, fun and just fantastic individual that I adore and respect māk māk..🤗 Taew, thank you from the bottom of my heart for showing me the real Thailand, the core culture of the Tribes and Thai People, the history of Lanna Kingdom, Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, and King Meng Rai and Buddhist Temples and Pagodas and also teaching me little bit of colloquial Thai language.. I loved learning about your country’s history and stories of Kings and Lord Buddha and the significance of Dragon statue… and a heartfelt thank you for making my birthday so special… this is for lifetime.. I have brought back all of these beautiful, fun and new memories I made in Thailand back home with so much light and love! Lastly, thank you so much for being my friend on this amazing journey as well! I will miss you dearly!❤️😘🥹K̄hxbkhuṇ māk māk🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

A fabulous experience!

I would never have been able to do organise such an immersive trip myself, and our guide, Bank, was so awesome!

Intelligently organized for a beautiful trip

02-Jul-2023

My guide, Bank, was extremely thorough and informative in his guidance of Thailand. I was very impressed by everything he showed me, especially the background of the situation in which he took me too. Everything from riding bikes though the city, exploring caves, and eating incredible meals, I couldn’t have explored as much as I did without him. The company, culture trip, also did an incredible job or organizing the itinerary.

Amazing Thailand Trip - Unforgettable Nature, Culture, and Food

22-Aug-2023

My sister and I recently had the pleasure of experiencing Culture Trip's 10-day trip through northern Thailand. This intimate small-group adventure perfectly blended cultural immersion, outdoor activities, and relaxation. The accommodations throughout the trip were absolutely wonderful, allowing us to fully relax and recharge between activities. Having transportation to and from each item on the itinerary already arranged was amazing - it allowed us to simply focus on having a great time. We started in the lively city of Chiang Mai, where our fantastic local guide Bank led us on a bicycle tour to see street art and sample delicious Thai cuisine. He was extremely knowledgeable about the history and culture of the area. After getting a taste of city life, we headed to the countryside in a comfortable van. Due to recent rains having taken out the boats/rafts, we were unable to float through Tham Lod Cave, however Bank arranged a mini spelunking expedition that let us explore inside the cave instead, which was really cool. Watching the sunset over Pai Canyon's formations was a highlight. We enjoyed jungle treks past waterfalls and a rejuvenating hot springs soak. Visiting the elephant sanctuary to feed and bathe the rescued elephants was a trip highlight. On our last night at the beautiful AT KHUA LEK Cafe & Restaurant, Bank surprised my sister with a birthday cake and live music, a thoughtful touch. I highly recommend Culture Trip's thoughtful itineraries for an authentic, unforgettable nature and culture adventure.

Tropical Northern Thailand

24-Feb-2023

My Culture Trip experience was (mostly) positive and provided an incredible opportunity to see parts of Thailand I would not have been able to see otherwise! What I loved about the Culture Trip vibe in particular was that there is an age requirement of 25+, which allowed me to make more friends my age who have similar interests. The small group size was great too -- being a small group allows for stronger friendships, the ability to participate in more group activities, and it was much easier to travel together. The planned activities in Thailand were amazing, too. I loved being able to arrive in Asia with practically no planning done on my own. Having everything coordinated and scheduled took away so much stress of entering a new part of the world I had never been. That was probably my favorite part of doing a group trip! As with any group trip, there are going to be activities you might not fully enjoy or places you'll stay that you wouldn't have probably booked yourself. I think it's important to keep an open mind and remember that when traveling to a new country that you will likely not have all the comforts of home. There were a few hotels in Thailand that were definitely impacted by COVID and were a bit run down for 'luxury' stays, and there were others that were just stunning. As time goes I'm sure Culture Trip will receive feedback on these hotels and adjust itineraries accordingly. Something so underrated also is having a local guide with you every step of the way. (My Thailand tour guide's name was Bank and he was awesome!) Having someone to be able to read and speak the language relieves a lot of pressure from being able to navigate, as well as communicate with locals. Not to mention that you get to learn about the culture from someone who lives it! Overall I would totally book another tour with Culture Trip. I personally went with a friend, but traveling alone and participating would be a great way to make new friends while abroad
