Itinerary

Day 1

Day 1: arrive Calgary. Fly into Calgary City and transfer to your hotel. Later in the day meet your guide and the rest of the group for a pre-tour briefing before spending the evening at leisure.

Day 2

Day 2: Calgary - Banff. Depart Calgary in the morning and travel through the rolling hills of ranch country to the alpine town of Banff. The first easy hike is up Tunnel Mountain for the best views of the Bow River Valley and Banff town and get a feel for winter walks in the mountains. During this 2-3 hour hike you gain 260m over 5 kms return. Your guide has suggestions for optional activities like a visit to the Sulphur Mountain Hot Springs, or one of the museums and galleries. Return to your hotel and enjoy the night life Banff has to offer.

Day 3

Day 3: Banff. Head off to explore Johnston Canyon. Narrow catwalks built into the canyon walls allow walking beside frozen waterfalls with views into the gorge below where nature creates new ice sculptures every winter. Two or three hours hiking time brings a 120m elevation gain during the 5.2 kms return trip. Later there is time to try the thrill of sliding downhill on a tube under the night sky at Mount Norquay ski area, northwest of Banff.

Day 4

Day 4: Banff - Lake Louise. Begin the day with a gondola ride up to the top of 2281m Sulphur Mountain with views of six mountain ranges and Banff town nestled far below in the meandering Bow River valley. The Trans Canada Highway leads you through picture-postcard scenery to the high alpine village of Lake Louise right in the heart of the Rockies. Try ice skating on frozen Lake Louise - skates are available to rent at extra cost.

Day 5

Day 5: Lake Louise. Snowshoes are required for a hike along a forest trail to take in the view over Lake Louise and the evocative chateau on its shores. Following this 7 km hike with a 400m gain, treat yourself to a hot chocolate in one of the chateau's restaurants. Later in the day cross country skis are available to rent for those ready to slice through the snow on the trails along the lake shore.

Day 6

Day 6: Lake Louise - Jasper. Head off along the world famous Icefields Parkway, which winds up to the immense glaciers of the Columbia Icefields and slowly back down into Jasper National Park. Snow-covered peaks, silent forests, frozen rivers and hopefully wildlife provide ample photo opportunities on a journey of around # 235 km.

Day 7

Day 7: Jasper. Head out on a fat tyre biking adventure, ideal for the snowy conditions. The trip takes you through winter forests and over ice covered lakes. Following the day's exertion, perhaps visit the hotel's hot tub to relax.

Day 8

Day 8: Jasper. Visit Maligne Canyon, the deepest canyon in Jasper National Park, with a depth of up to 50m. During the winter months this canyon lies silent and with crampons strapped to your boots follow a local guide along the narrow gorge where icicles and frozen waterfalls decorate the limestone cliffs. Explore ice caves, fossils and towering frozen waterfalls over 30m high. In the evening you can visit the Jasper Dark Sky Preserve for a spot of star gazing and even the chance to see the northern lights. If conditions are cloudy you might be able to catch a hockey game or curling match in town.

Day 9

Day 9: Jasper. Head out on a snowshoe trek into the Valley of the Five Lakes, a quiet oasis where the snow offers a calming silence. Wildlife is still active in the winter so keep an eye out for snowshoe hares, deer, elk, coyotes or perhaps even a moose. The 4.5 km loop with minimal elevation gain is a relaxing 2-3 hour hike. Among the fun options for the afternoon are a Downtown Foodie Tour visiting four restaurants, tasting four handpicked dishes paired with alcoholic treats and listening to local stories.

Day 10

Day 10: Jasper - Edmonton. Leave Jasper and drive east watching the landscape change from mountains to forested foothills, then to prairie farms and cattle ranches. Arrive in to Edmonton, Canada’s premier winter city early in the afternoon. From ice castles to flying canoes; festivals are prevalent in Edmonton throughout the winter and you'll have opportunity to experience how locals here celebrate the season . For those who want to leave the cold behind there are plenty of options at West Edmonton Mall, home to indoor shopping, entertainment and lots of places to eat.

Day 11

Day 11: depart Edmonton. Enjoy the last of the winter fun before transferring to Edmonton airport for your flight home.
