This 11-day Morocco tour takes you on a wondrous journey through this historically-rich country, visiting its busy medinas, exploring its ancient sites and enjoying the unique tastes of the local Moroccan cuisine. We start in the seaside town of Casablanca - home to the Hassan II Mosque, which has the tallest minaret in the world - before we make our way to its capital city of Rabat - located along the banks of the Bouregreg River. From Rabat, we travel to the ancient Roman ruins at Volubilis - a UNESCO World Heritage Site before we travel to the walled city of Meknes, the ancient city of Fez and we'll also spend time exploring the busy city of Marrakesh, famed for its souks and mosques. We'll also visit Ouarzazate, a city situated south of Morocco’s High Atlas mountains and is often seen as the gateway to the Sahara Desert. We'll explore the Kasbah of Glaoui and the Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - before we end the tour back in Marrakesh. This is the largest ancient site in Morocco and full of impressive ruins.
Our final stop today is at the holy city of Moulay Idriss. This was only opened to mon-Muslims in 2005 and is where Moulay Idriss introduced the religion of Shiism in 789, starting a new dynasty. He also initiated construction of the city of Fes, which is where we end our journey today.

We'll spend plenty of time exploring the Medina, seeing various palaces and mosques (which non-Muslims will not be able to enter), and many different crafts on sale. ounds. Day 4 : Ouazzane & Chefchaouen
Location: Province of Ouezzane
Accommodation: Hotel
Accommodation Name: Chefchaoun Hotel
Meals Included: Breakfast
We leave Fes after breakfast today and head towards the Rif mountains. Our first stop is the picturesque town of Ouazzane, renowned throughout the Islamic world as an important spiritual centre as it was home to many of the pillars of Sufism. It also hosts the tomb of several important Moroccan saints which is a pilgrimage destination for many Jews who also consider Ouazzane a holy city. After a short time here we continue on into the Rif mountains and the incredible town of Chefchaouen.
The medina in Chefchaouen is unmistakable and one of Morocco's highlights, with its beautiful bright white and blue painted walls, steps and doors. The medina hosts both traditional Moroccan shops and cafes with authentic dishes to try, as well as some more touristy fare. The central square is the main focus with the 18th century Kasbah, central mosque and several cafes. You'll have time to explore the town and find a nice place to sit and eat and watch the world go by before we head to our hotel.
Day 5 : Chefchaouen (Optional Akchour Falls Hike)
Location: Chefchaouen
Accommodation: Hotel

Your day is free to explore Chefchaouen at your leisure today. You could explore the steep cobbled lanes, practice your photography, visit the leather and weaving workshops, or relax with a Moroccan tea or coffee in the square.
Another option today is to take a scenic drive (around 2 hours in total) into the hills to see the Cascades d'Akchour. There's a beatiful hike of around 2 hours here, following the river upwards, passing many small cascades to get to the main waterfall and pool at the top. There's a lot of height to gain and plenty of steps, so you need to be a little fit. If you bring a bathing suit with you then there's also the chance for a refreshing swim in the large pool below the main falls. Local Berbers offer tajines and snacks which are very welcome before you head back down again and return to Chefchaouen.
Day 6 : Tangier

It's another change of scene today as we bid a fond farewell to Chefchaouen and head up to the Mahgreb coast and the important city of Tangier. Known as the gateway between Africa and Europe, the city has an important strategic location at the western entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar which connects the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Many artists including Jack Kerouac, Tennessee Williams and Matisse found inspiration here. Even the Rolling Stones spent several days here recording with the legendary Master Musicians of Jajouka.
Tanjier's location means it has a fascinating mix of cultures and influences which you can discover while exploring the port, the old and new medinas, and the Dar el Makhzen, formerly a sultans' palace but now a museum of Moroccan artefacts. The many rooftop terrace cafes also make great places to sit with a drink and watch the world go by.
Day 7 : Rabat & Casablanca

It has the world's tallest minaret (210 metres) which is topped by a laser shining light towards Mecca. It is also the only mosque we know of in Morocco that allows non-muslims to visit. Combined with its spectacular location with the sea waves lapping up against it, this is a highly recommended visit. (Note - visits into the mosque are not allowed during Ramadan).
We'll then make our final drive of the tour on to Marrakech, arriving in time for lunch. Your afternoon is free or you can book an optional guided tour of the city with our guide. The tour will feature Marrakech's pride and main landmark, the Koutoubia Tower. A companion tower to the Giralda Tower in Seville and the Tower of Hassan in Rabat, it is said that the sultan who built them had the eyes of his architect cut out to prevent him from ever building a more beautiful tower elsewhere. Our tour of course will also take in Marrakech's UNESCO listed medina, which is packed with stalls packed with spices, crafts, and seemingly everything else under the sun. We'll finish at the Djemaa-el-Fna, which is Marrakech's famous large open square. This really comes to life at night with masses of street food stalls, entertainers and local people packing it for the evening. The rest of the afternoon is free to relax by the hotel pool, enjoy a hammap experience, explore the markets further, or do some souvenir shopping, before we meet up for a final group evening meal. You may then wish to head back to the square for a final exciting taste of Moroccan life.

Check out our Q&As
-
What should I know before travelling?
It is important when considering and preparing to travel anywhere in the world that you have a good understanding of the country you are visiting, its laws and customs, and the possible risks and situations that may occur. This includes specific risks related to your itinerary (eg. does it involve water & can you swim, are you fit enough for the activities included), as well as more general risks such as terrorism and natural disasters. General details and links to more information about health risks, visa requirements, money, and travel insurance are given in these tour notes. We recommend that you re-read all these before your departure as well as the small print of your travel insurance policy so you know exactly what is covered and what is not. You should take copies of your important travel documents with you and ideally also store them online securely as a backup. Make sure that you have given us your emergency contact details and told that person where and when you are travelling. Ensure you take enough money with you and that you have access to emergency funds. Finally, you should read through and stay updated with the current official government travel advice for your destination. We are registered partners with the UK Foreign Office's 'Travel Aware' campaign which provides further useful and invaluable information.
-
Are all entrance fees included in the price?
The tour price includes entrance fees to all the tourist sites mentioned in the itinerary. You will need to cover the cost of entrance to any other extra sites that you may wish to visit.
-
Are the local guides on the tour English speaking?
An English speaking guide will accompany the group throughout the tour, along with the driver. We may also use specialist local guides to give extra information at some of the sites visited during the tour. At Encounters Travel we aim to only use local Moroccan guides and drivers. We feel this gives you the best experience of the country and the sites you are seeing and many people describe our Moroccan guides as one of the highlights of their holiday.
-
Are all the relevant entry visa’s included in the price of the tour?
Visa arrangements are the responsibility of the traveller, and requirements are subject to change by the local authorities. We recommend that you contact your closest Moroccan consulate or embassy for current information for your nationality. Currently, many nationalities (including USA, Canada, UK, European, Australian, New Zealand) do not need to obtain a visa to enter Morocco as long as your stay is for less than 3 months. Other nationalities should check with their local consulate.
-
Is there a limit to luggage that can be brought on the tour?
There is no luggage limit for this tour. However, most airlines restrict you to between 20kg and 25kg for your hold luggage and between 5kg and 10kg for hand luggage. Please check with your airline before travelling to the airport.
-
Are airport transfers included in this tour?
This tour includes a 24-hour airport arrival transfer service in Casablanca airport. We will meet you as soon as you leave the main airport terminal and transfer you to your hotel. Full details along with local and UK 24-hour contact numbers will be provided on your tour confirmation voucher before you depart. Your arrival transfer will also be included if you add any additional pre-tour nights accommodation with us. If you make your own arrangements for additional accommodation at either the beginning or the end of the tour then you will need to arrange your own airport transfers on these days. A departure transfer back to the airport at the end of the tour is not included. However, your tour leader will help you to arrange a local taxi from the hotel to the airport in plenty of time for your flight departure. This saves you money and works very efficiently. The cost for the taxi journey is around GBP 10 / USD 15 / EUR 12 in Marrakech.
-
Is travel insurance compulsory?
Yes! Travel insurance is compulsory on all of our tours and needs to cover personal accident & liability, medical expenses and repatriation, travel delay & abandonment. We also strongly recommend that you take out cover against cancellation and lost/stolen baggage. Personal medical insurance does not normally provide sufficient cover and is generally not suitable for travel on our tours. You will not be able to join your tour if you have not provided us with details of your insurance or if you arrive without cover in place (no refunds will be due in this event).
-
What happens if I need to change my holiday date once I’ve booked?
You are always able to change your travel date. However, some charges may apply depending on how long before your departure you make the change. Our flexible booking conditions and reduced charges will apply if you are changing date because of a Covid-19 reason or because your government is advising against travel to your destination. Please check our detailed booking conditions for full details.
-
When is my balance payment due?
For all tours departing in 2020 and 2021, balance due dates are reduced to 28 days. For 2022 departures onwards they will revert back to our standard conditions (60 days).
-
Do you operate a “single share” option and how does it work?
On most of our group tours, solo travellers may choose to form a temporary 'tour bubble' and share a room with another traveller of the same sex in the group. If a room share is not available then a single room supplement may be payable, with the costs for these kept as low as possible. We have also removed compulsory single supplements from many of our tours, and are reducing the cost by 50% on s
-
How long can I keep my booking as a 'Credit on File'?
New bookings need to be made within 1 year of your original departure date, with travel started within 2 years of your original departure date.
-
Can I transfer my booking to someone else?
Yes, if you don't want to, or can't travel, you can transfer your booking and existing payments to other family members or friends. We are waiving our normal fees for doing this for all departures up to the end of 2022. This applies to bookings you may have moved to a Credit on File as well as those setup on a particular date. Note - not all payments may be transferrable.
