Tour Overview

Visit China's iconic sites in style on this premium tour with upgraded accommodation, upgraded transport, and the chance to sample Michelin class culinary delights. Beijing's history stretches back three millennia and the scale of Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City never fail to amaze. Leaving the grandeur behind, explore the old town's narrow 'hutongs', and have a class in the traditional Chinese craft of papercutting in one of the homes. Head out of the city and step foot on one of the best-preserved sections of the Great Wall; here you'll begin to comprehend the magnitude of this construction as it snakes across the mountains to the horizon and beyond. Juxtaposed to this is Xi'an's vibrant Muslim Quarter, where we catch a shadow puppetry show at Gao's Family Mansion. Xi'an is most famed for the nearby Terracotta Warriors of Emperor Qin, where excavations have revealed thousands of hand-crafted life-size and lifelike army figures. A China holiday would not be complete without a trip to Chengdu to see the endangered Giant pandas - these black and white furry animals are a national emblem and a rare sight. End in cosmopolitan Shanghai, with its unmistakable skyline illuminated at night.

Itinerary

Expand All
Day 1 : Arrive Beijing; Welcome Dinner In Michelin Class Restaurant
Meals Included: dinner

The group flights are scheduled to arrive into Beijing this afternoon. Free
transfers are included for any flight as long as you have provided Exodus
with your arrival details in advance (please specify if you arrive into PEK
airport of the new airport, PKX – Daxing). You will be met upon arrival and
transferred to our hotel. There will be a welcome briefing at approximately 6
pm where you will meet your tour leader and the rest of the group (please see
the noticeboard in the hotel reception for further details). After the
briefing, we’ll head to one of Beijing’s top restaurants to sample the
Michelin Star cuisine. China World Hotel or similar

Day 2 : Sightseeing Including The Forbidden City, Jingshan Park And A Walking Tour Of The Hutongs Including A Traditional Paper Cutting Class
Meals Included: breakfast

We’ll head straight to Tiananmen Square by private transport this morning
(<30 mins), one of the largest squares in the world, able to hold over a
million people. The square is named after the 'Tiananmen' meaning 'Gate of
Heavenly Peace' located at its north, which leads to the Forbidden City.
Continuing on foot, we spend a few hours exploring the innumerable courtyards
and temples the Forbidden City. Exiting via the north gate of the complex, we
walk directly to Jingshan Park and climb up to the top of the hill for a
different vantage point. After lunch, we go on a walking tour of some of
Beijing’s traditional 'hutongs' (narrow alleys of the old town) where we'll
visit a local's house and try to master the art of paper-cutting, a
traditional Chinese craft. Afterwards, we’ll meander our way through the
hutongs and back to the hotel.China World Hotel or similar

Day 3 : Visit The Great Wall Of China; Return To Beijing
Meals Included: breakfast

We leave the capital and head into the countryside to visit one of the
best-preserved sections of the Great Wall, at Mutianyu (approx. 2 hours’
drive). It is an impressive sight, snaking across mountains and valleys into
the distance. We take the shuttle bus to the ticket office and from there
it’s about a 40-minute uphill walk to the top of the Great Wall (anyone not
wanting to walk can pay to take the cable car, which takes about 8 minutes).
We spend the next couple of hours or so walking along the top of the wall.
There are some steep steps to navigate and anyone who suffers from vertigo
may find it difficult. This section of the Great Wall used to serve as the
northern barrier defending the capital and the imperial tombs. The wall here
stands up to 8.5 metres high and 5 metres wide, and there are 22 watchtowers
along its 2,250m stretch. We’ll leave the wall behind and drive a short way
to our lunch stop in a local village and then drive directly back to our
hotel in Beijing.China World Hotel or similar

Day 4 : Bullet Train To Xi’An; Walking Tour Of The Muslim Quarter With A Shadow Puppetry Show At Gao’S Family Mansion
Meals Included: breakfast

Transfer to Beijing West Station (approx. 40 minutes) and catch a bullet
train to Xi’an, arriving in the mid-afternoon. We transfer to the hotel,
check-in and freshen up before starting our walking tour of the vibrant
Muslim Quarter where we’ll pass aromatic spice markets, the Bell and Drum
Plaza and visit Gao’s family mansion where we hope to catch a shadow
puppetry show (depending on the show time). Xi'an is one of China's former
capitals and one of the few cities in China to have retained its city walls,
probably because they are so massive that no revolutionary was willing to
tackle the huge task of removing them.Xi’an Park Hotel or similar

Day 5 : Excursion To The Terracotta Warriors
Meals Included: breakfast, lunch

Today we visit the famous Terracotta Warriors of Emperor Qin (the transfer is
approx. 2 hours each way). Originally four armies were planned, at each point
of the compass, life-size and lifelike. Three have been found and it is
assumed the Emperor's successors decided enough was enough before the fourth
was begun. The first pit excavated had an estimated 6,000 figures in its one
army. The third pit has been opened to the public, which contains the
'command post' for the entire operation. This is one of China's great tourist
attractions, and some people may find the sheer numbers of visitors
overpowering. After our visit, we will take our lunch at a local farmer's
restaurant nearby before driving back to Xi’an.Xi’an Park Hotel or
similar

Day 6 : Free Day In Xi’An; Optional Cycling Along The Old City Walls Or Mount Huashan Day Trip
Meals Included: breakfast

There are no planned activities today but your leader will provide
information on what is available to do and help you to arrange it. Perhaps
you might like to walk along or hire bikes and cycle along the city walls to
appreciate the sheer scale of these constructions. For a full day excursion
(a long and tiring day but worthwhile for the scenery), you might like to
visit Mount Huashan for some walks with magnificent views (please note that
we strongly advise against the plank trail due to safety concerns and anyone
wanting to do this will be asked to sign a form releasing them from the tour
as Exodus accepts no responsibility for this activity).Xi’an Park Hotel or
similar

Day 7 : Bullet Train To Chengdu; Afternoon Walking Tour Around The People’S Park – Try Chinese Water Calligraphy (Weather Permitting)
Meals Included: breakfast

Take a short transfer to the train station and board a late morning bullet
train to Chengdu (approx. 4 hours), the capital of Sichuan province, arriving
in the early afternoon. This region is recognised throughout China as being
'the spicy province', and major flavour combinations include garlic, star
anise, chilli peppers, and the ever-present Sichuanese peppercorn (hua jiao).
We recommend having a ‘hotpot’ dinner during your stay here (spicy or
mild broths are available). In the late afternoon we set off on foot for a
walking tour, passing through the city centre square (Tianfu Square) and
visiting the People’s Park where weather permitting, we can see and have a
go at Chinese water calligraphy.Sofitel Chengdu Taihe or similar

Day 8 : Visit The Giant Panda Breeding Centre
Meals Included: breakfast

We leave early today to spend the morning visiting the Giant Panda Breeding &
Research Base located 10km out of the city. These furry animals once roamed
over large expanses of Asia but the last survey estimated the world’s
population of wild Giant Pandas at only 1,864. Giant Pandas eat for up to
fourteen hours a day and so hopefully we will witness these highly endangered
animals feeding, as this is when they're most active. Otherwise, we will have
the opportunity to watch the Pandas indulge in their next favourite past time
- sleeping! Afterwards, we drive back to Chengdu and the afternoon is free to
explore at your own pace.Sofitel Chengdu Taihe or similar

Day 9 : Fly To Shanghai; Afternoon Visit To The Shanghai Museum
Meals Included: breakfast

A pre-dawn start is required today in order to catch an early flight to
Shanghai (we’ll take a simple box breakfast with us from the hotel). The
flight duration is approx. 2.5 hours: we should land by late morning and
arrive at our hotel by lunchtime. With a population of around twelve million,
Shanghai is a cosmopolitan coastal hub with a futuristic skyline. This
afternoon we take the public bus (metro) to visit the Shanghai Museum, which
has 11 galleries housing some of China's most beautiful and best-preserved
cultural relics - some over 5,000 years old!Shanghai Bund Riverside or
similar

Day 10 : Explore The Bund Waterfront Area And The French Concession; Farewell Michelin Class Dinner
Meals Included: breakfast, dinner

After breakfast we’ll set off to discover some of the highlights of
Shanghai on foot, starting with the famous Bund waterfront area to see the
iconic buildings, before moving on to explore Nanjing Road (Shanghai's
equivalent to London’s 'Oxford Street') and the French Concession with its
tree-lined avenues, cafes and Tudor mansions. The afternoon is at your
leisure. Tonight more culinary delights await as we'll have a farewell group
dinner in another of China's Michelin class restaurants. Shanghai Bund
Riverside or similar

Accommodation

Food

All breakfasts, 1 lunch and 2 dinners in Michelin class restaurants included. One of the major draws of China is its exciting and varied cuisine. On this trip, you will be able to try many different dishes that will be carefully selected with your leader's help and based on the group's dietary requirements and preferences. Meals generally consist of shared dishes, which is the best way to experience as many different ingredients as possible and try things you might not usually choose. Examples of popular dishes include Ma Po Tofu, a delicious tofu dish made with beef, chillies and onion, Gong Bao chicken, a very popular dish with chilli and peanuts, the iconic Peking Duck, served with hoisin sauce and pancakes, and dumplings in many shapes and sizes. Chengdu in Sichuan province is known for its spicy hotpots but you can request mild options too. There are many different dishes to try and your leader will always try and accommodate tastes, but if you do tire of Chinese food there are always opportunities to eat Western-style dishes in the cities you visit. For vegetarians or those with dietary requirements, many of the traditional dishes can be amended to omit the meat products.

Very helpful and prompt service

06-Jan-2023

Very helpful and prompt service. I called to check for an already booked trip and once we sorted this, the agent was ready to help me with another booking as well. He actually waited for me to book my flight tickets, answered all my questions, informed me of all my options. Exodus is a tour company I am using regularly due to the quality of their trips, ease of booking and helpfulness of their customer service team

Stunning walking. Walking the Amalfi Coast

04-Nov-2021

This trip takes you through the most beautiful parts of the Mediterranean walking with a guide and also discovering the wonders of Pompeii and Vesuvius. The hotel had a nice feel as family run, spotless and comfortable rooms, we were well looked after for breakfasts and dinner each day, and the barmen fixed some mean cocktails for us.!

It's amazing what you can do in a week! Cycling the Dalmatian Coast.

08-Oct-2021

This holiday was extremely enjoyable. The itinerary is well planned and the route takes you to a variety of destinations. Not having been to Croatia before I didn't know there were so many beautiful small islands and I loved the ferry and catarmaran rides. The coastal route we took was dramatic and the World Heritage sites in Split and Dubrovnik very interesting and worth visiting. The Adriatic Sea was warm, blue and inviting, good for swimming even in October. The hotels we stayed in varied in size from medium to large. I particularly liked the one just outside Dubrovnik as I had a sea view. Tourists were plentiful in Split and Dubrovnik but in the other places we stayed there was an end of season feel and it was quiet on the roads and in the resorts. The food was good and our guide was always able to recommend a nice restaurant for our evening meal. The weather in October was good for cycling - not hot, partly cloudy most days and one day it rained!

Fabulous company and trip

06-Jan-2023

We went overland from Cape Town to Zimbabwe through Botswana and Namibia. What a fantastic trip. Our first time with Exodus although we have travelled extensively around the world. We would highly recommend this company for such a brilliant trip - we got everything and more all at a good price. Thanks to everyone involved. We are looking at our next trip!

19-Aug-2023

I went cycling in Albania with exodus as my first holiday with them. Such a well organised and wonderful experience where I met multiple fellow travellers who have been advocates of them for many years. You can't argue with happy repeat customers and I'm planning my next adventure with them soon

I'v just come back from...

17-Jul-2022

I'v just come back from an amazing Wildlife & Wilderness trip in Botswana and I highly recommend Exodus Travels. Our guide Brian, was extremely knowledgeable on both the wildlife and history of Botswana and neighbouring countries. The other three staff, Abbis, Chief & Mr T, who accompanied us through out our 2 week trip, put in the hard work and made sure our camp was always prepared and that we we're well fed and looked after. The tour took us to some beautiful places and we saw some amazing wildlife, and on several occasions this was due to Brian's knowledge of the area and wildlife behaviour. Exodus have been very quick to respond to any queries I had, and the whole experience ran smoothly. I was also pleased to hear that during lockdown they provided staff with food packages 👍. I'd normally go on self organised trips, however, with this trip, the tour and guide Brian took us to places not possible otherwise and showed us things that we would'v missed out on. All of which were the highlights of the tour.

I've done 8 trips in...

17-May-2023

I've done 8 trips in the last 14 years with Exodus, and have been rewarded with a 10% discount on all future bookings. I feel very confident that I'll receive pleasant, efficient service, and have the unusual holiday experience that I'm looking for each time. I've trekked to the top of snow-capped peaks, wild-camped in the desert, seen amazing spectacles of nature, visited 4 capital cities in a week, and learned about local culture and experienced local hospitality in a way that I simply wouldn't on a conventional holiday. The quality of the accommodation and guides can vary, but this is mainly down to cultural differences and things that Exodus can't control. I've only ever complained once, my complaint was taken seriously, and I was sent a discount voucher - you can't say fairer than that. I remain a loyal customer.

07-Mar-2024

Food came quickly. Staff very friendly and polite . However the chef or person preparing the food did not seem to read the menu! If it says a meal should come with vegetables, you should not have to ask for them. They served shepherds pie with garlic bread! The munchies ice cream sundae said it should come in a glass with a flake but came in a little bowl with just a few munchies! When asking the staff were happy to replace and correct but customer should get what they order and what menu says first time round!!

07-Sep-2023

If you like to be mistreated Exodus is perfect for you. If you enjoy terrible choices for hotels and pseudo restaurants Exodus is perfect for you. Careless about their clients and loveless about their propositions. Exodus has been a dissatisfaction and disappointment about every dealing i and my group have had with him. Especially a man called Simone who just cares about the money he can get from you couldn’t care less about service.
