Itinerary

Map Image
icon Day 1 : Start Moneglia.

Meals: dinner

We begin in the charming seaside town of Moneglia. Beautifully located in the heart of a bay on the Mediterranean sea, the picture-postcard town is listed since 2012 on the 'I Borghi Più Belli d'Italia' (Most Beautiful Villages of Italy) and has been awarded the European Blue Flag every year since 1990, for its clear waters and the quality of the services offered.

icon Day 2 : Follow the coastal trail between Deiva Marina and the villages of Framura and Bonassola

Meals: breakfast, lunch

In the morning we take a short train to Deiva Marina and start our walk through holm oak forests and maquis shrubland. The walk begins with a relatively steep path, climbing up to picturesque woods of pine and strawberry trees. Our efforts will be rewarded at the top of the hill with stunning panoramic views of the coastline and the Promontory of Portofino. We will then take an ondulating trail that offers beautiful views over the Ligurian Sea and leads to the village of Framura, where we stop for lunch. After the refreshments, we descend by steps almost to sea level then meander through woods until a final steep climb for magnificent views of the sea. We then head to the pretty village of Bonassola before taking the train back to our hotel in Moneglia.

icon Day 3 : Take the train to Cinque Terre N.P; walk the stunning paths to some of Liguria's prettiest villages.

Meals: breakfast

Today we will set out to visit the spectacular Cinque Terre (Five Lands), one of Italy's most beautiful 'works of art', declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 and part of the Cinque Terre National Park. The best way to explore these charming villages is on foot, and today we will walk on the famous Sentiero Azzurro Ligure (Ligurian Blue Path), which connects the five villages. Today we will visit three of the five, namely Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso, and we will pass along old mule tracks, walking through terraced vineyards and olive groves. After completing some steep and rocky sections, we will be rewarded with wonderful views of the colourful villages, built into the rocks facing the sea. Please note that some sections of the path may be closed so we may need to take the train between villages or change the itinerary accordingly. At the end of the walk, we catch the train back to Moneglia where there will be time to relax or go for a swim before dinner.

icon Day 4 : Walk on the Portofino promontory and explore the world-renowned fishing village of Portofino itself.

Meals: breakfast

This morning we will set out by train to Santa Margherita Ligure, a charming coastal town, where we will begin our hike to the fishing village of Portofino. Famous for its pastel-coloured houses and picturesque harbour, the town is now attracting celebrities from all over the world.

icon Day 5 : Free day to relax, take optional walks or visiting nearby Portovenere or Genova.

Meals: breakfast

Today you will enjoy a well-earned break and perhaps spend your day relaxing at the beach. Those with more energy might like to use the opportunity for some sightseeing. Genoa, the region’s capital city, home of Christopher Columbus and the largest aquarium in Europe is not be missed. Alternatively, you could spend some time in the near town of Porto Venere, referred to being one of the stops in the "Bay of Poets"  or use the day to visit the beautiful town of Lucca, located further away.

icon Day 6 : Transfer to Rapallo by train, take the cable car up Montallegro for fantastic views and walk down to Chiavari, afternoon wine tasting.

Meals: breakfast, lunch

This morning we will take a short train ride to Rapallo and the cable car up to the sanctuary of Montallegro (600 mt). From here we will set out on a walk through quiet woodland, catching glimpses of the Ligurian sea en route to the seaside town of Chiavari. In the early evening we will have the chance to enjoy the local speciality at our well-deserved wine tasting!

icon Day 7 : Return to the Cinque Terre area for an alternative walk through glorious coastline and colourful villages.

Meals: breakfast

This morning we will head back to the famous Cinque Terre to walk some of the quieter, alternative trails. The exact path you will walk will depend on local track conditions, but they are generally on higher ground than the classic Sentiero Azzuro, so offer even more spectacular views of the coastline and villages.

icon Day 8 : End Moneglia.

Meals: breakfast

Our trip ends in Moneglia, after breakfast.

Although the steps (up and down) involved should not be underestimated, the 'amber warning' refers to the rainstorm that coincided with our day off.

Despite this, I would recommend this trip to anyone who enoys coastal scenery and even suggest this relatively late departure date to avoid some of the crowds in the popular Cinque Terre villages.

The hotel in Moneglia was very good, serving a good evening meal on the first night and a wide selection of breakfast food in the mornings.

Moneglia was certainly quieter than the places we visited during week, so was quite restful.

Travelling by train to each start point was enjoyable and quick in comparison to road travel around the area.

The walks I would have said were graded a bit low at 3, certainly the steps and rocky climbs and descents needed a good set of knees and or walking poles, walking boots essential.

Not a set of walks for trainers, though one did see idiots in insubstantial footwear attempting them.

Wonderful views of the villages of the Cinque Terre and coastline as the walks progressed.

Walk to Portofino was pleasant but the place was quite crowded even in May as we experienced .

Three cruise ships anchored in the bay on one day would not have helped matters.

If you don't mind being organised by someone and can go with the flow this is an excellent trip.

We did not have to pay for anything in terms of travel during the days apart from lunch on the those when packed lunches were not provided.

On the basis on this trip which was my first with Exodus I would definitely consider other tours with them.

Every day the walks showed different aspects of this stunning landscape.

Walks through forests ( good in the heat) along terraced vineyards, olive groves and old mule tracks.

Stopping at the famous Cinque Terre villages for lunch that jut out into the azure sea on rocky promontaries.

After a day walking feast on delicious seafood and local ligurian wines.

Get to the start of walks using the local trains that show you glimpses of sea inbetween tunnels.

The scenery is magnificent and the Cinque Terre villages are as beautiful as i hoped, despite the crowds you can still appreciate the unique atmosphere and architecture of these tiny villages.

Several times we walked through lovely flowers or woods.

The hotel is just across the road from a Blue Flag beach with safe swimming , lovely after a hard walk.

Local food is tasty and affordable and especially good if you like anchovies and ice cream (not together!) The walking is strenuous going up the cliffs at the start of the day and down at the end, but there is plenty of time allowed and the "level" parts are well surfaced and easy.

I really reccommend this holiday.

Well planned out.

The walks were varied - and all with beautiful views.

In the evenings, Suzy took us to some great restaurants.

On the walk to Portofino we stopped off at a restaurant in the hills where the tomatoes for the caprese salad were plucked off the vine next to the restaurant - fantastic.

The hotel was nice, and very close to the beach.

The wine tasting, with somebody who was passionate about the wines of the region, was fascinating.

Our guide Michela was fantastic, making every day a day to remember.

Her walks were sometimes challenging but always within everyone's capabilities and we visited some amazing villages.

The holiday did not stop there as Moneglia where we stayed was full of restaurants which made for wonderful evenings out.

Would never have chosen to do it differently.

No time was lost or wasted pondering.

Our time there was precious.
