Highlights
Itinerary
Day 1 - London To Berlin
We meet at our Departure Office at St Pancras and take the
Eurostar to Brussels, continuing by rail to Berlin for two
nights.
Day 2 - Guided Tour Of Berlin
On Day 2 we embark on a guided tour of the once-divided city. We
visit Brandenburg Gate - a symbol of unity in Germany - and the
parliament building, the Reichstag. The rest of your day is free in
Berlin, which despite its turbulent history, has evolved into a
vibrant metropolis. While away the hours in a gallery, stroll
through one of the city's parks, or find a beer garden to relax
in.
Day 3 - Wroclaw
We leave Berlin, continuing through Poznan to Wroclaw.
Day 4 - Wroclaw
On Day 4 we enjoy a boat trip on the
River Odra, seeing the colourful buildings and Gothic spires of
Wroclaw from a unique perspective. In the afternoon, we take a
walking tour of the city, discovering its ancient cobbled streets,
sprawling canals, beautiful bridges, and historic Old Town. We see
the oldest part of the city, Ostrow Tumski Island, with its
stunning cathedral. Across the river is the university, where we
visit the striking Aula Leopoldina ceremonial hall with its Baroque
Rococo decoration and painted ceilings. We also see the Market
Square, home to the City Hall and some impressive burgher houses,
which housed the most wealthy citizens of medieval Wroclaw.
Day 5 - Krakow
We travel by train to Krakow, where we stay for four nights. The
city is filled with beauty, much of it original as Krakow survived
World War II largely unscathed. The cobbled streets of the Old Town
are packed with treasures, many of which we see on our walking
tour. We see Wawel Hill, home to the castle where Polish kings
lived, and the cathedral where they are buried, as well as pretty
St Mary's Church.
Day 6 - Krakow
Day 6 is free in Krakow. At the heart of
the city is the largest fully-intact medieval square in Europe,
where an array of cafés and restaurants can be found. This is the
perfect chance to sample authentic cuisine, such as pierogi. These
delicious dumplings are a Polish staple, and are commonly filled
with cheese, potato and onions.
Day 7 - Auschwitz
This morning we board a coach to Oswiecim, the Polish town the
Germans called Auschwitz. We take a moving tour of the
Auschwitz-Birkenau museum; Nazi Germany's infamous concentration
camp that has been preserved as a permanent memorial and poignant
reminder of the crimes against humanity perpetrated here. We visit
the original camp 'Auschwitz I', where prisoners would enter under
the chilling 'Arbeit Macht Frei' sign, and 'Auschwitz II:
Birkenau', the larger camp where the original railway and platform
remain. Alternatively, you could spend the day exploring
Krakow.
Day 8 - The Salt Mines
We leave Krakow by coach and head to the Salt Mines of
Wieliczka, the oldest operational mines in Europe and now a UNESCO
World Heritage site. We take a guided tour of the intricately
carved underground chambers, including a magnificent cathedral and
impressive statues. Everything we see within the mine is the
handiwork of the original salt miners. This evening we take a walk
through Krakow's Jewish District, where we stop to dine at a local
Jewish restaurant.
Day 9 - Warsaw
We travel to Warsaw for a three night stay, a city of imposing
Stalinesque architecture, wide avenues, and expansive
parks.
Day 10 - Warsaw
We enjoy a sightseeing tour on Day 10,
seeing the historic market square, St John's Cathedral, and Castle
Square, which sits in front of the red-brick Royal Castle.
Day 11 - Free Time In Warsaw
Day 11 is free in Warsaw. You may wish to
take a stroll through Łazienki Park, one of the most beautiful
green spots in the city. Or visit the Muzeum Fryderyka Chopina,
which provides visitors with a unique behind-the-scenes glimpse at
the life and works of one of Europe's most famous composers,
Frédéric Chopin.
Day 12 - Hanover
We rail to Hanover, where we enjoy a farewell meal at our
hotel.
Day 13 - London
On Day 13, we travel to Brussels for the
Eurostar to London
