Days 2-3 - Wengen
After a relaxed morning, we board the train to Basel, continuing
to Interlaken where we join the Bernese Oberland Railway and start
climbing into the majestic Swiss mountains. We arrive in peaceful
Wengen this evening, a traffic-free mountain resort with
breathtaking views over the Lauterbrunnen Valley, where we stay for
Day 3 is free in Wengen and the surrounding
area. A paradise for hikers, Wengen is the perfect base from which
to discover the Swiss Alps on foot. The early 19th century saw an
influx of wealthy tourists flocking to the timber chalets and Belle
Epoque charm of this peaceful village, and ever since, visitors
have come to enjoy its unique location amongst the rugged
Day 4 - The Wengen-Männlichen Aerial Cableway
Our excursion takes us on this innovative cableway, originally
built in 1954 to connect Wengen with the mountains. Within five
minutes, the difference in altitude reaches 9,744 feet and we
arrive in Männlichen, where sensational views can be admired from
the café. After some time to look around, we continue to
Grindelwald aboard Europe's longest gondola cableway. This pretty
Alpine village is one of Europe's oldest mountain resorts.
Surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau,
there are many popular walking paths in the area or you may just
like to explore the town, visit some shops and relax in one of the
Day 5 - The Jungfrau Express
Today includes the highlight of our holiday as we travel on the
famous Jungfrau Railway to Jungfraujoch - the highest railway
station in Europe. Our journey starts as we climb from Kleine
Scheidegg, the distinctive string of red and yellow carriages
disappearing into a tunnel cut right through the Eiger. The train
pauses at two separate observation stops along the way; windows
hewn out of solid Alpine rock boasting spectacular views down the
valley below. Finally, the train arrives at Jungfraujoch, the 'top
of Europe', located more than 11,000 feet above sea level. With
free time at the summit station, there's plenty of time to explore
the Ice Palace and its incredible ice sculptures. You can also
spend time at the Sphinx Terrace, enjoying superb views across the
Aletsch Glacier, the longest ice stream in the Alps. After time to
explore and enjoy lunch, we return to Wengen, passing picturesque
villages and idyllic farming cabins as we go.
Days 6-7 - The Schilthorn and Trümmelbach Falls
An excursion by cable car takes us to the summit of the
Schilthorn. After catching the train to delightful Mürren, we board
the cable car for our ascent to the summit, home to a revolving
restaurant that features 360 degree views of the Eiger, Mönch and
Jungfrau mountains. Named Piz Gloria in honour of the James Bond
film, 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' filmed here, there are many
007 references to spot in the building and out on the mountain.
Following some free time, we visit the Trümmelbach Falls. Nestled
deep in the canyon, the falls have carved a path for themselves
through the hillside, making them Europe's largest subterranean
waterfalls and the only glacial waterfalls accessible by its
underground lift, galleries, tunnels, paths and platforms.
Day 7 is free, so why not use your included
Swiss Travel Card to explore the area? Perhaps journey up to
Schynige Platte, travelling in restored 19th-century carriages
hauled by a vintage electric locomotive or take a ride on the
Brienz Rothorn Railway, one of the steepest in Switzerland and
powered almost entirely by steam.
Day 8 - Wengen and London
After breakfast, we leave Wengen, taking the train to Paris via
Interlaken and Basel. Here we connect with the Eurostar service
back to London St Pancras.
