Day 7: Izmir (B/-/D)
Today you may enjoy a free day at leisure to explore the breathtaking city of Izmir. Izmir is the third-largest city in Türkiye, the second biggest port after Istanbul. Once the ancient city of Smyrna, İzmir is now a modern, developed, and busy commercial centre, set around a huge bay surrounded by mountains. The broad boulevards, glass-fronted buildings, and modern shopping centers are dotted with traditional, red-tiled roofs. Discover 18th-century markets, old mosques, and historic churches. However, the city does have an atmosphere closer to Mediterranean Europe than traditional Türkiye. İzmir owes its position as an economically and socially dynamic city to its location, climate, and the fact that it has been home to many cultures and religions. Persians, Ancient Greeks, Assyrians, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans are just a few of the dozens of civilizations that the city has hosted through its long history.
