Tour Overview

A private transfer from Kigali will take you to Volcanoes National Park, covering approximately 106 km in 2 to 3 hours. On arrival, you will embark on a golden monkey trekking adventure. At 08:00, head into the forest to spend an hour observing a troop of 40-100 golden monkeys, an endangered species. The visit supports research and conservation efforts, and bird enthusiasts should keep an eye out for species like the Blue Turaco. In the afternoon, enjoy canoeing on the Mukungwa River. Start with a 15-minute transfer from Musanze to the riverside for a briefing. Paddle gently downstream, learning to steer your canoe before navigating small rapids with provided helmets. Afterward, return to Musanze and transfer to Tiloreza Volcanoes Ecolodge for dinner and an overnight stay. Begin the next day with a mountain gorilla trekking experience. Divide into groups of up to eight, each accompanied by a ranger, and trek through the forest for 1-3 hours to encounter a family of mountain gorillas. This hour with the gorillas offers an unforgettable wildlife experience. Optionally, visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund to learn about ongoing conservation efforts. Afterward, transfer back to Kigali.

This morning, your driver will meet you at your hotel and transfer you to Volcanoes National Park.

The journey is approximately 106 km and will take between 2 to 3 hours.

Today you will head out into the forest to track an endangered species of monkey known as the Golden Monkey. Spend 1 hour watching the monkey families play in the forest! This is a wonderful wildlife encounter as the proceeds from tourists visiting goes towards the research into the protection of this species and how to preserve their environment so that they do not become extinct. And if you're into birds then make sure to ask your guides to point out the species that you may find on the trails, which if you're really lucky may include the rather impressive Blue Turaco!

Meet at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters at 07:00 and at 08:00 you will begin hiking through the forests to spend an hour with a troop of 40-100 playful golden monkeys who are jumping and running all around. This rare species is listed as endangered and there are currently two troops of monkeys of around 80 members, that have been habituated to visits by tourists in the park. You will trek to find the golden monkeys in a similar way to the gorilla trek, in a small group of no more than six people, spending one hour with the monkeys once you have found them.

he start is a 15 minute transfer from central Musanze (add about 15 minutes from Kinigi). Here your activity leader will give you a briefing on the riverside before you get on the water. The first section is a flat and easy opportunity to learn how to steer your canoe as you float gently downstream. After about 20-30 minutes you will pull over for a short additional briefing about the small rapid, where helmets must be worn. Then as you continue deep into the countryside, you are surrounded by the sights and sounds of rural Rwanda. It takes about 20 minutes to drive back to Musanze and a further 15 minutes to Kinigi. Day 2 : Mountain Gorilla Trekking & Ellen DeGeneres Campus - Return to Kigali

On arrival, everyone will be split into groups of up to 8 people – and maybe joined with other tourists – before being allocated a ranger. You will then drive a short distance to the start of the trail, from where you will trek in the forest for around 1-3 hours or so to meet the gorillas. When you find them, the hour you spend with these incredible primates is a true lifetime experience that you will never forget. There will be an option in the afternoon where you will be proposed to visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus by the Dianna Fossey funds to learn more about the conservation into action. This afternoon, after today's activities in the park your driver will transfer you from Volcanoes National Park back to Kigali.

We found ourselves with a spare day in Musanze and found Kingfisher. They quickly sorted a trip on the Mukungwa river. Our guide Walter was fantastic and we had a great time paddling and spotting birds. Don’t worry about the rapids …. They are gentle. Would highly recommend but do make sure you have a hat and sunscreen.

Top experience to do while you're in Musanze / in between your activities in Volcanoes Park. Canoeing on the river is lovely, close to nature and peaceful. People, go kayaking on Lake Kivu, you won't regret a single minute!! I did a 2-day kayaking trip from Karongi with camping on an island. It was just me and Emmanuel, my guide, felt like a weekend out with a friend. We both had a great time enjoying the beatiful nature, exchanging kayaking stories and talking about anything and everything. The camping spot was perfect, just the two of us and the friendly guardian of the island. It was all very well organized, professional and friendly with good equipment all the way. For female single travellers: no problem at all to do this by yourself, these guys will keep you safe!

I had a great time today in Musanze with our guide Pacifique. The canoe ride is an hour and a half to 3 hours depending on your fitness and that day’s current. This is my second time to go down the river and I always love it. Lots of birds and nature to take in. Definitely pay for the drop off and pick up service. Perfect for anyone between the ages of 5 and 70.
