Tour Overview

Setting off from Kibuye, we navigate to Lake Kivu’s ‘Bay of Islands,’ an extraordinary locale in Rwanda. We island-hop, enjoying lunch and a swim in the crystal-clear waters. Our afternoon visit to Napoleon Island introduces us to a lively colony of fruit bats. A short paddle later, we reach our campsite on an uninhabited island, lush with native trees and vibrant birdlife. We set up camp, support local fishermen by buying fresh fish for dinner, and enjoy a simple meal cooked over an open fire. The next morning, we awaken to a captivating dawn chorus at Comoran Lodge. After breakfast, we kayak back toward Kibuye or head to Kinunu for a coffee tour. We paddle along the scenic coast, marveling at the mosaic of small farms that define Rwanda’s hills. Lunch on Amohoro (Peace) Island offers a moment to reflect on our journey. In the afternoon, we make the short paddle back to our starting point, wondering how quickly time has passed. Practical Notes: No prior kayaking experience is required, though reasonable fitness is necessary. Guides will be on hand for assistance. Be punctual as missed departures aren’t refundable. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and light, quick-dry clothes. A raincoat is advisable during the wet season. Footwear that can get wet is recommended. Leave valuables behind to avoid damage or loss. Adventure camping at Gishayu Island is optional. Checking out from the island after breakfast, we paddle a modern sea kayak through inlets and bays, soaking in the stunning scenery and meeting local fishermen. This afternoon, a driver will transfer you back to Kigali, with the journey taking approximately 3.5 to 4 hours.

Day 1 : Transfer from Kigali to Karongi at Lake Kivu

Setting off from Kibuye, we soon approach Lake Kivu’s ‘Bay of Islands’ a beautiful setting unlike anywhere else in the country. We then ‘island hop’, stop off for lunch and a swim in the crystal clear and impressively clean, fresh water to cool off. In the afternoon, we visit Napoleon Island where there is a remarkable (and noisy) colony of thousands of fruit bats that fight amongst themselves for the best roost. It’s then just a short paddle to our campsite, on another beautiful uninhabited island that is still covered with native trees that provide a rare haven for numerous species of birds dart in and out of the foliage.

Day 2 : Kayak from Karongi to Gishayu Island with a stop to visit Napoleon Island

After a simple breakfast, we turn back towards Kibuye or end in Kinunu for a coffee tour before meeting your driver to proceed to your next destination, this time following the coast where we have superb views of the lush mosaic of crops on small farms that make Rwanda’s hills so special. Before reaching Kibuye, we call in for lunch on Amohoro (Peace) Island, where there will be time to contemplate just how special the past couple of days have been. Then, in the afternoon it’s just a short paddle back to where we began; was it only yesterday?

Practical Notes:

We provide full instruction, so you don't need any previous experience but you should be reasonably fit and mobile. During the activity the guide will stay close to be on hand if you need their help.

We need to leave promptly, so please be ready on time. There are no refunds for missed departures.

Bring a hat, sunscreen and wear light clothes - such as shorts and a t–shirt that can get wet and a change of clothes to change into at the end. A raincoat is also a good idea in the wet season.

Most people go barefoot in the canoes and kayaks, but footwear that will get wet is recommended for when you get out at the end. Sandals work well and flip flops are ok.

Please leave behind your jewellery, phones, cameras and anything else that could be damaged by water or lost if it doesn't float! Adventure Camping at Gishayu Island (Optional)

Day 3 : Kayaking from Gishayu back to Karongi & Transfer back to Kigali

Check out from our island this morning after breakfast, you will paddle a modern sea kayak or sit-on-top to dip into inlets and across bays as you soak up the spectacular scenery, meeting the fishermen and admiring the views of this beautiful Lake heading to Kinunu.

This afternoon, you driver will transfer you to Kigali. The journey will take between 3.5 to 4hrs.

We found ourselves with a spare day in Musanze and found Kingfisher. They quickly sorted a trip on the Mukungwa river. Our guide Walter was fantastic and we had a great time paddling and spotting birds. Don’t worry about the rapids …. They are gentle. Would highly recommend but do make sure you have a hat and sunscreen.

Top experience to do while you're in Musanze / in between your activities in Volcanoes Park. Canoeing on the river is lovely, close to nature and peaceful. Benjamin and his team are knowledgeable and can explain you about the region, fauna and flora. Lots of birds to see ! Don't hesitate to book with them.

People, go kayaking on Lake Kivu, you won't regret a single minute!! I did a 2-day kayaking trip from Karongi with camping on an island. It was just me and Emmanuel, my guide, felt like a weekend out with a friend. We both had a great time enjoying the beatiful nature, exchanging kayaking stories and talking about anything and everything. The camping spot was perfect, just the two of us and the friendly guardian of the island. It was all very well organized, professional and friendly with good equipment all the way. For female single travellers: no problem at all to do this by yourself, these guys will keep you safe!

I had a great time today in Musanze with our guide Pacifique. The canoe ride is an hour and a half to 3 hours depending on your fitness and that day’s current. This is my second time to go down the river and I always love it. Lots of birds and nature to take in. Definitely pay for the drop off and pick up service. Perfect for anyone between the ages of 5 and 70.
