Tour Overview
This captivating tour opens up the heart of Ireland to reveal its natural beauty, fascinating history and rich culture.
Itinerary
Day 1
Regional departure by coach, then to Holyhead for the ferry to Ireland, then to our overnight hotel in Carlow.
Day 2 Cashel & Limerick
Location: Cashel & Limerick
We head west across Ireland, making a short stop in Cashel, to view the famous Rock with its imposing cathedral. Continue to Ireland’s third largest city, Limerick, with a history stretching back to Viking times.
The main focal point of the city is King John Castle, which stands on the banks of the River Shannon. Amongst a host of fine buildings, including two cathedrals, there are also many examples of the Georgian period. We later reach Adare, where we stay for three nights.
Day 3 Bunratty & Lough Derg
Location: Bunratty & Lough Derg
Our included excursion takes us to Bunratty and the 15th century Castle, which is the most complete in Ireland and houses fine displays of medieval furniture, utensils and weaponry. Its history stretches over 500 years of turbulence and was finally restored in 1954.
Next to the Castle is the Folk Village, a fascinating collection of authentic 19th century houses and cottages where you get a feeling that time has stood still.
Close by is Ireland’s most famous pub, ‘Durty Nelly’s’, allegedly Irelands oldest pub where we can enjoy Irish hospitality at its best and of course a pint of Guinness. For those of you in need of shopping therapy, a walk round the Village Mills might be more to your taste. We later head to Killaloe, where we offer an optional cruise on the Shannon’s largest lake, Lough Derg.
Enjoy the peace and tranquillity, together with the beautiful scenery, as we leisurely ply the waters.
Day 4 Killarney
Location: Killarney
We set off on our optional full day excursion to the picture-postcard town of Killarney, world famous for its beautiful setting.
The town has a good selection of shops, cafés and bars for you to explore before setting off on an optional ride on one of the famous horse-drawn Jaunting Cars through the National Park and along the shores of Lough Leane to Ross Castle.
Day 5 Adare & Dublin
Location: Adare & Dublin
Spend part of the morning in Adare, which lays claim to being Ireland’s prettiest village, set on the west bank of the River Maigue. The village itself dates back to the Norman Conquest; the history of which can be seen in the Adare Heritage Centre, which takes you back in time and the exhibition includes a 20 minute film which brings it all to life. The thatched cottages lining Main Street provide a wonderful photo opportunity.
We later leave our hotel and head to Dublin, where our optional sightseeing tour will show you the main highlights. The first thing you notice is the wealth of elegant Georgian architecture, notably in Fitzwilliam and Merrion Squares, which the Irish are proud to preserve and maintain. The city is divided by the River Liffey, crossed by many bridges, most famously the Ha’penny Bridge and with a host of historic, artistic and literary connections, Dublin has a great deal to fascinate the visitor.
Day 6
To Holyhead, then home.
Accommodation
You will stay for one night at the Seven Oaks Hotel in Carlow. You will then stay for three nights at Fitzgerald’s Woodlands House Hotel, situated in beautiful grounds on the edge of the village of Adare.
