Tour Overview
Fly to Scotland and embark on a journey enjoying three delightful rail rides in the Scottish Highlands!
Itinerary
Day 1
Fly to Glasgow and stay for one night in the Glasgow area.
Day 2 Stirling
Location: Stirling
We travel by coach to Stirling, with its magnificent castle and preserved ancient town. While in Stirling, why not visit some attractions such as the Church of the Holy Rude, the Old Town Jail where tales of the horrible history of crime and punishment in the Royal Burgh of Stirling happened, or the Stirling Smith Art and Museum Gallery, or even the Engine Shed which tells the story of traditional buildings of Scotland.
We continue to the Kingussie or Newtonmore area for a four-night stay.
Day 3 Aviemore Steam Railway & Spey Valley
Location: Aviemore Steam Railway & Spey Valley
We travel by coach to Aviemore and take the Strathspey Steam Train for a ride through the spectacular Speyside Mountains. Afterwards, enjoy free time in Grantown on Spey, a traditional town surrounded by ancient woodlands, before returning by coach to our hotel.
*Please note: On dates when the Aviemore Steam Railway is not operational, we will visit Inverness, and travel to Loch Ness, where we enjoy a cruise on the loch.
Day 4 Kyle Line Railway
Location: Kyle Line Railway
We head to Dingwall by coach for today’s included excursion, and board the Scotrail service to travel through mountains and lakes and alongside Loch Carron into the small port of Kyle of Lochalsh, from where we travel by coach to the Kyleakin on the Isle of Skye. After some free time, we return to our hotel through glorious Highland panoramas. (Please note that this rail journey may operate in reverse; Kyle of Lochalsh to Dingwall).
Day 5 Jacobite Railway
Location: Jacobite Railway
Today, we enjoy a journey aboard the Jacobite Railway, enjoying views of the beautiful views of lochs and mountains. Our rail journey takes us over the Glenfinnan viaduct, made famous by the Harry Potter films. (Please note that your train journey will either be one-way from Fort William to Mallaig or one-way from Mallaig to Fort William). During the day, we will call at Neptune’s Staircase – a staircase lock built by Thomas Telford.
Please note: on some tour dates a diesel train may be in operation.
Day 6 Edinburgh
Location: Edinburgh
Enjoy free time in Edinburgh. Often referred to as the ‘Athens of the North’ and, because it was built on seven hills, likened to Rome, Edinburgh is indeed a classical city in its own right. Overlooking the Old Town is the massive castle, with its commanding view of the city and surrounding countryside, including the Firth of Forth. The almost chaotic layout of the Old Town is in complete contrast to the northern part of the city built in Georgian times and reflecting the great architectural characteristics of that period. Laid out to a grand design, the New Town has wide streets and elegant squares and is bordered to the south by Princes Street Gardens and to the north by Queen Street Gardens. Highlights include the Royal Mile, the Palace of Holyrood and Sir Walter Scott Monument.
We head to our overnight hotel in the Glasgow area.
