We accept any travel insurance provider as long as we have the necessary policy details, including the policy number and the company's 24-hour emergency contact number. It should cover medical expenses, emergency repatriation, personal liability, and trip cancellation or curtailment. Also, check if it includes coverage for COVID-19 treatment and repatriation. While other inclusions like loss of baggage or flight coverage are optional, it's best to consider them for comprehensive protection. Please ensure your insurance is valid from the first day of your trip with Lupita Overland. If you want to use your annual or credit card insurance, it's crucial to carefully review your policy to ensure it provides sufficient coverage for adventure and overland travel.

We go above and beyond to include more activities, meals, and visits to both popular highlights and remote destinations, ensuring you get the most out of your adventure. While some competitors may cut costs by skipping essential attractions or leaving activities as optional, we prioritize the quality and depth of your experience. Our approach fosters better group dynamics as everyone can participate in shared activities without worrying about additional expenses. By carefully comparing our inclusions and offerings, you'll quickly realize the exceptional value a Lupita Overland trip provides. You'll save money and have a more immersive and fulfilling journey!

  • Can I book upgrades in advance?

While upgrades are usually available, they cannot be guaranteed in advance. Your crew will assist you in booking upgrades during the trip. If camping is not your preference, you can opt for a 100% hotel trip or inquire about our tailor-made options. To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience, please inform us in advance if you wish to request an upgrade or have specific requirements. We will do our best to accommodate your needs and prioritize your comfort and satisfaction during the journey.

  • What is a Cook Group? How does it work?

A Cook Group consists of 2-3 people responsible for meal preparation during our trips on a rotating basis. The tour leader will assign members to each cook group and provide ideas and quantities for cooking. You'll have time to plan your meals and create a shopping list for fresh food (non-perishable items are usually already available in the van). Every time it is possible, we shop at local markets rather than big supermarkets, enhancing the cultural experience and supporting the local economy. Once at the camping destination, the kitchen is set up, and the cook group, with assistance from our crew, cooks calmly enjoying the experience. We will inform the groups of any dietary restrictions. We accommodate dietary restrictions and aim to cater to everyone's likes. For example, the main sauce might be vegetarian and we will cook some meat apart so anyone can add it to your taste. If you are vegetarian and do not wish to handle meat, you will be in a group where others are happy to do this. After cooking, everyone helps in cleaning and tidying up the camping gear, including washing dishes.

  • Should I expect En-route refunds if not being able to follow the included plans?

As a policy, en-route refunds for cancellations of included activities, accommodation, or airport transfers cannot be guaranteed. Tour prices are based on group rates, and changes or cancellations may not be eligible for refunds. In some cases, small refunds in local currency may be provided for adjustments or cancellations during the trip. Unforeseen circumstances may lead to itinerary changes, and your understanding and flexibility are appreciated. For specific concerns about refunds or itinerary changes, you can contact us for assistance.

  • Do I need to pay any local payment/group found?

No, you do not need to pay any additional local payment or group funds during the tour. Our tour prices cover accommodation and activities. You can have peace of mind knowing that there are no hidden fees or extra payments required once you have booked your tour with Lupita Overland. The price you see is the price you pay, and it includes everything specified in the tour itinerary. We aim to provide transparent pricing and a hassle-free experience for our travelers. Enjoy your adventure with us without worrying about any additional costs!

  • What policies are in place for Covid-19?

To ensure the safety and well-being of passengers and crew during the ongoing Covid-19 situation, several measures have been implemented. These include adding an extra opening window in the vehicle to improve air ventilation when necessary, thorough disinfection of the vehicle before each tour, compulsory use of hand sanitizer before entering the vehicle, and free provision of hand sanitizer disposable surgical masks. The use of sealed potable water is prioritized, even for washing dishes. It's important to note that these measures may be adjusted based on the current situation, and continuous updates will be made as needed, with common sense and communication between the group.

  • Will there be Mosquitoes and Insects?

In certain areas, there may be mosquitoes and insects during the trip. Coastal areas like Oaxaca's Coast can have a high abundance of mosquitoes. We prioritize accommodations with mosquito nets to protect you while sleeping, but communal areas like restaurants may not have them, so it's advisable to use mosquito repellent and wear long sleeves and pants during the evenings. In jungle regions, you might encounter insects such as big spiders, but they are usually not dangerous, and it's best to let them be. In some cases, insects may enter cabins, but our team and hosts will be available to assist if needed. Being prepared with mosquito repellent and appropriate clothing can minimize any discomfort. Our experienced crew will ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience.

  • If I am traveling solo, will I be charged for having my room?

On our trips, rooming is typically organized on a twin-share basis. As a solo traveler, you will be paired with another traveler of the same gender. However, if you prefer to have your own space, you have the option to pay for an individual room. Single rooms are available on the majority of our trips under request.

  • How much camping is involved?

Our trips typically include camping, with an average camping percentage ranging from 0% to 35%. You can review the accommodation details for each stop on the daily itinerary. If you're new to camping, don't worry - our vehicle comes fully stocked with tents, sleeping bags, liners, and basic mats, to ensure a comfortable camping experience. Our experienced crew will be on hand to assist you throughout the process. If camping isn't your preference, there are usually options available to upgrade to cabins during camping stops or choose trips that do not involve camping.

In general, Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize are safe countries for tourists, and the locals are welcoming and helpful to visitors. As with any adventure travel, there is always an inherent risk, but choosing a reputable local company like Lupita can significantly reduce this risk. We prioritize security and have numerous safety measures in place to ensure your well-being. For additional travel advisories, you can check the websites of your government’s travel advice. While our itineraries are designed to be comprehensive, we also understand the importance of allowing travelers to have the flexibility and independence to explore on their own. Having some free time allows you to have a more personalized experience, interact with locals, and immerse yourself further in the destinations you visit. Your tour leader will usually provide suggestions and recommendations for things to do and see during your free time.

  • What level of active involvement is expected on an Overland Trip?

Yes, active involvement is encouraged and welcomed during your Lupita Overland trip! When you join one of our expeditions, you become an integral part of the team, not just a passive passenger. Overlanding is all about collaboration and participation, and we believe that the more you engage with the experience, the more rewarding and enriching it becomes. Throughout the journey, everyone participates in various tasks, such as setting up camp, pitching tents, shopping for food, and cooking. We have a rotating "jobs" list posted on the notice board during the trip to ensure that everyone shares the responsibilities. This shared effort fosters a strong sense of camaraderie among travelers, and it's through these shared tasks and experiences that unforgettable memories are created. So, be prepared to get involved, embrace the spirit of teamwork, and make wonderful memories together!

  • What are the Advantages of Overland Travel?

Traveling overland offers several often overlooked advantages compared to other travel styles. Sharing dedicated transport for the entire trip means no waiting around, and traveling during daylight hours allows for fantastic sightseeing. With trusted local guides and partners, there's no need to search for special excursions. Sharing responsibilities with the group makes logistics easier, and the experienced crew takes care of background arrangements, ensuring a stress-free journey. Overlanding allows you to meet like-minded travelers and forge lifelong friendships, and you have the flexibility to do your own thing while benefiting from cost-effective travel and access to off-the-beaten-track destinations. Additionally, you get the opportunity to mix with the local community, meet homestay members and locals, and experience authentic interactions during your adventure.

Your well-being is essential to us, and we will do our best to accommodate your requirements.

Some hikes may involve steep hills or uneven terrain, and you should be prepared for moderate physical exertion. We understand that each individual has unique physical capabilities and preferences. These resources will ensure you have all the necessary information for a memorable trip.

  • Do you hire local guides for the included activities?

Yes, we hire carefully chosen local experts and professionals to guide travelers through included activities, such as archaeological sites, trekking excursions, and community projects. These local guides enrich the tour itineraries with their unique perspectives and knowledge. Collaborating with them ensures an immersive and meaningful travel experience while supporting and engaging with the local communities visited.

  • What is the tipping policy?

Tips for local guides and included activities are already covered in the tour price, so there is no need to tip them separately. However, if you feel our overland crew has done an excellent job and you wish to show appreciation, a tip is always appreciated, but not obligatory. The approximate amount for tipping the crew is around 3-8 USD per day per crew member, but tipping is entirely at your discretion and within your means. Tipping in restaurants and optional excursions is common and typically around 10%, if you are pleased with the service. For airport transfers or taxis tipping is not common. At hotels, tipping around 10-20 pesos for assistance with luggage is customary, and you may also leave a small tip for housekeepers. When it comes to street artists, sellers, or beggars, the choice to tip is entirely yours. Supporting local development projects is also a great way to contribute to the community.

The weather in the areas we visit is generally pleasant, with sunny days and temperatures ranging from 15 to 30 ºC. However, there are some potential adverse weather conditions to be aware of. Food is an exciting aspect of travel, especially when exploring Mexico's vibrant cuisine. Our flexible itineraries allow you to experience group meals or dine on your own, according to your preferences and budget. While touristy towns offer a variety of food, remote areas may have limited options, but it's an excellent opportunity to savor traditional dishes. Common meals include eggs and quesadillas with various fillings such as cheese, mushrooms, beans, eggs, chicken, or pork. Vegetarians might find options a bit repetitive, and vegan choices are unfortunately quite limited. Certainly, you can typically reserve a single room for private accommodation during your trip. This option is usually available during the booking process. However, please be aware that we may not be able to guarantee single rooms for all stops. In such instances, we recommend informing us of your preference for single accommodation when making your reservation.

  • How much extra money will I spend while on the trip?

The extra money you'll spend on the trip varies depending on personal preferences and the tour itinerary. Most activities and a significant portion of meals are covered, but budget for optional activities, visa fees, drinks, souvenirs, laundry, additional meals, and local transportation. Review the trip notes and itinerary to plan your budget and ensure an enjoyable experience with Lupita Overland. Happy trails!

Our driving days are generally shorter compared to other companies, but on a few occasions, they may last up to 7-8 hours. Please note that the driving hours indicated in our itineraries are approximate and do not include time for activities, lunch, or restroom breaks. During the journey, we make regular stops every two to three hours for restroom breaks and opportunities to visit interesting places along the route. Remember… It’s the journey, not just the destination!

  • Can I opt out of certain activities if I want to?

Absolutely. If there are included or optional activities that you don’t wish to participate in, you can do your own thing instead. The exception to this is when we are trekking or traveling from one destination to the next. Please note that if you choose to opt out of an included activity, no reimbursement can be made by Lupita.

  • How do you arrange room sharing? Who will I share with?

Room sharing on the trip is arranged to create a positive group dynamic. If you booked with a specific person, you'll share a room with them. Solo travelers share rooms with others of the same gender on a rotation basis. If you prefer your own space, you can pay for an individual room (subject to availability). Hotel stays usually have twin rooms, sometimes triple or single rooms. Community stays may involve sharing basic cabins with more than three people (occasionally open-gender). While camping, you'll share a spacious tent with another passenger.

  • Are there vaccination or testing requirements for your trips?

We don't require any proof of vaccination. As tour operators, we are not medical practitioners, and therefore, we are unable to provide specific medical advice or vaccination recommendations. We highly recommend consulting with a qualified healthcare professional or official source for advice on vaccinations and health precautions for your travel destinations. We strongly advise all travelers and leaders to get vaccinated against COVID-19 for their safety and the safety of others. Note certain destinations or airlines may have their own testing or vaccination requirements, so travelers should check travel and entry requirements carefully.

  • I have dietary requirements, is this a problem?

We value accommodating dietary requirements to ensure a comfortable experience for all travelers. Please inform us of your needs when booking, and we'll consider them when planning meals, especially during camping days. While touristy towns offer a variety of food, some regions may have limited options. Genuine Mexico, Day of the Dead Edition

02-Dec-2023

I was able to join Lupita’s “Genuine Mexico, Day of the Dead Edition” from Mexico City to Oaxaca. Jaime graciously allowed me to join the group because I was unable to fully participate in the first week of my “Wonders of Mexico” trip in Spring 2023 due to my knee injury. Because the “Day of the Dead” trip was fully booked, Jaime made special arrangements for my husband and me to stay in the group hotel. The group welcomed us with open arms and we had a fabulous time with them for a week. I am a graduate of ITMI (The International Tour Management Institute in California, USA). I graduated from their in-person 4-week course as a Certified Tour Director in 1982. It is from the perspective of that training that I write this review. Most tours can drive you to the various sites and deliver you to a hotel. The dirty little secret about group travel is the power of the Tour Director to make or break a trip. Blindness to human nature, the inability to “read” the group, can kill a trip. Only very special leaders can work their magic on a group of strangers and watch them depart the trip as true friends. I know a good Tour Director when I see one. Jaime is one of those very special leaders. Lupita Overland is the embodiment of Jaime’s vision. What sets Lupita apart is Jaime’s keen awareness of how groups function. This understanding gives Jaime the uncanny ability to bring out the best in everyone who participates—passengers, crew, hotel staff, and local guides. His even temper and good humour is appreciated by everyone. The result is a cohesive group which functions well and where everyone has fun. My “Wonders of Mexico” trip in Spring 2023 was fabulous. I watched Jaime quickly knit our group together into a fun-loving, cohesive whole. I have been a passenger on more than 15 long-haul overland adventures….with Trailfinders, Guerba, Exodus, Dragoman and Intrepid. I have travelled as a passenger with Abercrombie & Kent, Windstar Cruises, and with some of the best ground operators around the world. Against all of these, Lupita’s “ Day of the Dead October 2023 ” stands as one of the best group experiences I have ever had. Well done!

The trip went without a hitch

16-Feb-2024

We all had a great time on Jaime's immaculately designed new VW overland van. The trip went without a hitch, the Mexican people are all truly lovely and the weather is nearly perfect. Jaime truly loves his adopted country and he worked tirelessly to give us all a unique experience which we had. Thank you again. g and heather (dragoman)

Really enjoyed every day.

Wonderful leader who certainly went ‘beyond’ and an excellent driver. Saw amazing and varied sights. From ancient temples to mangrove swamps and crocs. Lovely beaches, indigenous lifestyles and colonial towns. We were also lucky enough to see a carnival.

Genuine Mexico

24-Mar-2024

What a fabulous trip! Jaime is such an enthusiastic, positive, helpful and knowledgeable leader and we all felt safe with Miguel as the driver. The itinerary had everything - antiquities, wildlife, beaches, landscapes, street food, meeting the locals, boat trips and the Mexican people are lovely. I would recommend this trip to everyone! And it was very good value. Thank you, Jaime. Heather

It is an amazing itinerary with highlights every day

25-May-2023

I was a passenger on the inaugural trip in March/April 2023 - South Mexico Wonders - for three weeks. It is an amazing itinerary with highlights every day. The trip is diverse; history. culture, Mayan sites, beautiful colonial cities, jungle, mountains, wildlife, beaches, lakes - the list goes on! The tour leader, Jaime, is exceptional - enthusiastic, inspirational, and friendly to everyone he meets. Nothing is too much trouble and the trip was very well-organised. Add to this a great driver in Cesar, both safe and helpful, and the whole trip ran smoothly, was a wonderful experience and full of laughter I would highly recommend Lupita Overland to anyone interested in visiting Mexico and sharing a unique experience.

What an amazing two weeks in Mexico with Jaime and Lupita Overland Travel. We have seen the country, learned about its history and explored its culture. The whole holiday was perfect from start to finish thanks to Jaime’s expertise as a first-class tour leader. Many laughs and so many memories. Thank you, Jaime!

This overlanding experience through Mexico was amazing!! Jamie the guide is so full of energy and passion for this beautiful country. A well-thought-out route with a diverse variety of stays. So many highlights, that you will feel like you have been there for longer than 3 weeks, it's packed full of wonder. I could not recommend a better way to travel to Mexico!

This is an amazing tour!

24-May-2023

It was our first time in Mexico and it didn’t disappoint – in fact, it totally exceeded our expectations. The diversity throughout was incredible – art, culture, and great cuisine in Mexico City, multiple Mayan historical sites – each different and each spectacular, backed up by some great guides, fantastic cenotes, beach and jungle experiences, and lovely wildlife. However, it was the inspiration and enthusiasm of our lovely leader, Jaime, that made the trip. He put together a superb itinerary with at least one exceptional highlight every day and his friendliness, charm, and overall joie de vivre is infectious. Add to this a great and safe driver in Cesar and the overall three-week experience is life-enhancing and not to be missed. Overlanding is an acquired taste and this encapsulates everything that is good about it.

A great tour of Southern Mexico

25-Apr-2024

A great tour of Southern Mexico and celebrating the day of the dead festival is something that everyone should do. The itinerary was a good pace and made enjoyable with Jaime leading us.
