On arrival in Funchal airport, transfer by private coach the hotel in the centre of Funchal, ready to start our incredible 2 week adventure in Madeira.

During your time in Madeira, you will explore the island through a variety of walks which may include one or more of the following. Some walks may be substituted due to weather conditions, or changes beyond our control.

Time: 4.5 hours

A great introductory to Madeira’s intricated Levada walks. Finish 550m above Funchal in Monte, home to an exotic tropical garden.  Enjoy this cooler climate and tranquil atmosphere, with wonderful panoramic views over Funchal. miles

From the Caniçal tunnel, cross terraces, slowly rising to the Boca do Risco pass, where suddenly the turquoise sea opens up in front of us several hundred metres below. The dramatic cliffs rise from the sea below, what a view! You'll follow a narrow winding cliff path to the pretty village of Porto da Cruz where there will be time for refreshments or maybe take a dip in the sea water pools by the beach before returning to Funchal. A great way to conclude a fantastic day! miles

The peninsula at the far eastern end of the island is utterly different from anywhere else on Madeira. Here there is bare eroded igneous rock with wonderful unique colour formations. It's an arid, barren, and windswept landscape, yet the vistas spanning the rocky terrain and tracing the cliff edges are nothing short of otherworldly. The trail on this peninsula is an out-and-back journey, making it an ideal choice for a more relaxed day, particularly when the mountainous regions might be rain-soaked. miles

This is an extraordinary walk, many regard it as one of the most remarkable day hikes you can experience! Starting at Pico Arieiro, standing at over 1800m, you'll wind our way through spectacular rock formations to Pico Ruivo, Madeira's highest mountain, passing through several tunnels on the way. On some fortunate days, you'll find yourself walking above a sea of clouds, with the islands dramatic peaks piercing through the mist and the vast expanse of the Atlantic stretching out beyond. When you reach Pico Ruivo, look back towards Pico Arieiro and Picos das Torres, creating a truly awe-inspiring vista.

Please be aware that this walk is above grade 5, more suitable for walking at the higher end of grade 6 and a strong head for heights is needed. Please note that this walk is not always possible as the paths are exposed and prone to damage and closures. Sometimes the path is not suitable to walk due to weather conditions too. miles

There will be a rest day offered during the week for personal exploration. There are so many walking options to be considered, or maybe immerse yourself in culture by visiting other areas of Madeira.Funchal is an enjoyable place to stroll around in and take it easy. Perhaps enjoy some souvenir shopping or explore some of its delightful restaurants and cafes for lunch!It is possible to visit some of Madeira’s famous gardens. Dolphin and whale watching tours are available. Or maybe sit back and enjoy the hotel's swimming pool and bar area!

This is a beautiful and very enjoyable levada walk. There are spectacular views towards the central mountains from Balcoes and down to the north coast by Porto da Cruz. 

This scenic route meanders through a lush laurisilva forest, a botanical wonder recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Within this unique ecosystem, you'll encounter a remarkable assortment of plants and animals, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. In fact, Madeira boasts the world's most impeccably preserved example of this ancient forest, making this walk a truly one-of-a-kind and enchanting experience. miles

Today say farewell to Funchal and transfer by road across Madeira to Porto Moniz in the North West corner of the island. The journey is very scenic with spectacular mountain and coastal views.

Embark on a distinct countryside hike, offering a refreshing departure from the iconic levada walks of Madeira. Meander along rustic country paths, winding your way through vibrant green landscapes. As you explore, you'll be treated to awe-inspiring vistas that reveal the coastal beauty and the peaceful village of Ribeira da Janela nestled below. miles

WalksDistance: 6.3 milesTime: 5.5 hoursSet out on an invigorating uphill walk through a picturesque woodland, commencing from Achadas da Cruz, and eventually reaching a tranquil levada. The path is narrow at times, but well protected. The levada itself, once harnessed to power mills, often flows briskly. During your journey, prepare to be captivated by the breathtaking panoramic views of the dramatic coastline and the steep, terraced hillsides, which have been meticulously cultivated over the years.For an extra touch of exploration, consider taking a detour to the source of the levada before following its course to Santa. There, you can enjoy a well-deserved break at a local café. Afterward, continue your adventure by descending traditional cobbled steps that will guide you to the coastal gem of Porto Moniz. miles

Transfer to Ponto do Sol for your remaining few days exploring Madeira.

Time: 3.5-4 hours

The transfer bus will carry you up to the breathtaking Plateau of Paul Da Serra, where you'll be greeted by your first glimpse of the awe-inspiring Big Peaks. Upon beginning our descent towards Encumeada, the bus will make a stop to drop you off before continuing to Ponto Do Sol with your luggage. The descent commences on a charming, narrow levada path, affording open vistas of the majestic Big Peaks to the east. You'll journey through an enchanting Eucalyptus forest, eventually emerging to panoramic views overlooking the Ribeira Valley. Continuing your descent, you'll pass through quaint villages until we reach the picturesque coastal town of Ribeira Brava.

Here, you'll have some time to enjoy a refreshing drink before prearranged taxis await to transport you to your hotel in Ponto Do Sol, situated along the sunny south coast. miles

Beginning in the village of Fontes we complete a circuit of the rolling hills to the north of the village before descending to Meia Legua in the lush Ribeira Valley. A gradual ascent brings you to Terreiros, revealing the landscape views begin to open out towards Boca Da Cerro, Pico Grande and the Big Peaks. After a well earned rest with panoramic views at the summit, return to Fontes. For those who prefer to skip the descent, transport is available from this point back to the hotel. However, it is worth noting that the views along the descent route are rewarding. miles

Follow Levada Nova through to Tabua. You'll find yourself venturing deeper into the heart of the countryside, and don't forget to keep an eye out for the mossy Waterfalls, an awe-inspiring spectacle when they're at their most vigorous flow. The route will then take you through luxuriant green forests and through to a low ceiling tunnel (a torch is required) and a cave.  Enjoy a day filled with breathtaking panoramic vistas, mesmerising waterfalls, and the delightful embrace of the Levadas. miles
