The itinerary is expected to follow the daily schedule outlined below but please bear in mind that the order of the days may be amended, or walks substituted, due to weather conditions, attraction opening times, public transport timetables or changes beyond our control. An ideal introductory walk to introduce you to the rich history of the area: from the settlement of ancient Sicilian tribes and the Ancient Greeks, through Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Norman, German, French and Spanish conquests, through the Second World War and to the Allied landings of 1943. Follow a path winding through the streets of Castiglione di Sicilia. Cross a bridge above the Alcantara river to a narrow country lane, winding through the Sicilian agricultural plots towards Cuba Bizantina, a small chapel built of lava stone and bricks in the 6th century in the Byzantine era. Afterwards, make your way down to the fortified village of Castelmola, a charming and picturesque village nestled high atop a hill, commanding stunning views of the azure sea. Continue your descent to the captivating town of Taormina, a place bursting with vibrant colours and beautifully situated on the slopes of a mountain, setting the stage for a memorable experience.

Follow the long staircase past interesting volcanic rock formations towards the river. If the river is not in flood, you may have the opportunity to take your boots off to enjoy a paddle. If there are high water levels, you can still see the glorious rock formations and a wonderful view of the gorge.Â
Ascend on farm paths and ancient mule tracks to the hanging village of Motta Camastra where you will enjoy a delicious traditional lunch at Le Mamme del Borgo, a local organisation of women who aim to provide an authentic Sicilian experience to visitors visiting the village. Â Â
Wrap up your day by following a serene lane that winds its way to Francavilla, a small town situated inland from the east coast above the resort town of Taormina with the ever present outline of Mount Etna.
Today's walk is shorter for the grade, but the ascent is demanding as it includes very rough terrain on broken paths which are often overgrown.

Today marks the day for an unforgettable walk around the base of Monte Nero on the slopes of the ever-active Mount Etna. Given its volcanic nature, the plan must always factor in its dynamic character.
Begin by following the path around the base of the dormant side crater known as Monte Nero, which means black mountain, where you can expand your understanding of volcanology while relishing panoramic vistas.
Keep in mind that your trek will take you to higher altitudes, and those visiting in the spring might encounter snow, so it's essential to come well-prepared with waterproof and warm layers, gloves and a hat, especially since the upper slopes can be quite chilly year-round.
Following your thrilling exploration of the slopes of Etna, the afternoon unfolds as a leisurely interlude, where you can recline and savour panoramic views of the rural colourful countryside while indulging in the delightful flavours of local wines at a nearby vineyard.
