Day 1 : ENTRANCE INTO YASUNI AND PADDLING THE TIPUTINI RIVER

Your Yasuni Exploration trip begins at our meeting point in the city at the heart of the Amazon: Coca. You will travel by car for two hours to the upper Tiputini River. From road to the river, you will hop into a canoe and continue one hour to the center of the Mandaripanga community. Upon arrival, you will visit the school and share some time with the local children. In the afternoon you will kayak for about three hours down the river, looking out for wildlife. With some luck, you might see troops of squirrel monkeys as well as colorful birds such as toucans, macaws, flycatchers, and others. Our guides will teach you about the different species of plants that grow on the side of the river and their meaning to the local people. In the late afternoon, you will arrive at the campsite and have a delicious dinner.

Day 2 : AN AFTERNOON WITH ANACONDAS
Location: Yasuní National Park

You start your day with a delicious breakfast before paddling along the river. Keep an eye out for more wildlife species that tend to make their way out at dawn. You might be able to spot a variety of birds such us trogons, eagles, hawks, tanagers, macaws, and others. You may also encounter a tapir before this nocturnal animal goes to sleep. After four hours of paddling, you will disembark on a short hike into a pristine forest where you will then go by canoe to a black water lagoon. Being their natural habitat, anacondas can be found resting upon the shore. The anaconda holds special importance to the local Kichwa people who believe it to be a powerful animal embodying the spirit of a god. You will also have the chance to go fishing for piranha, and if you are lucky catfish! In the late afternoon, you return to the campsite.

Day 3 : HIKING TO THE CLAY LICK

Into the forest, you go to learn about medicinal plants. Throughout your two-hour hike, our guides will show you a variety of plants and their meaning and use. Your next stop takes you to the Clay Lick, a mineral-rich mud pit. Many animals that live in the region supplement their diets with minerals from the clay. For that reason, many animals frequent the area such as peccaries, tapir, howler monkeys, and parrots. Later you go back to the campsite for lunch. In the afternoon you will visit a local indigenous Kichwa family, who will teach you about their way of living, culture, and traditions. Here you will help them make chicha, a fermented beverage that is typical in the region. This is also a prime opportunity to purchase handicrafts made in the village and support the local families.

Day 4 : PARROT PARADISE

Today’s adventure starts upstream on the Rumiyacu with a 45-minute canoe ride followed by a short hike to the hang out spot of local parrots. Almost daily black-headed parrots can be seen nourishing themselves through minerals from the water and mud in the area. After spending time taking in the splendid sight of these magnificent creatures, you will head back towards the Tiputini bridge and then travel by car to the city of Coca.

Day 5 : DEPARTURE – BACK TO QUITO

Today, your Yasuni Exploration tour comes to an end. You will head back to Quito on your own after an amazing expedition in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Transportation on the way back to Quito is not included in the program.

- Level of Activity: This trip is considered as 3 out of 5. No prior experience is required and your guides will always brief you about safety and proper use of gear on every leg of the trip. The paddling is on flat water with minimum current and the hiking on irregular terrain that can be muddy.
- Guides: All our guides have a professional background from the Tourism University; this means they have a degree in guiding, so their knowledge and skills when leading a group are top-notch. Each guide has many years of experience and they all have taken additional courses for other outdoor activities as well as have International First-Aid certifications. What is the weather like in Ecuador?
There are two seasons in Ecuador, rainy and dry. The temperature will range between regions and depending on their altitude. You can travel to Ecuador year-round. Here, is a brief explanation of the weather in Ecuador: Amazon In the Amazon region, there is rain during the whole year. Two relatively drier periods can be distinguished in the months of January and February and August and September. The western part of the Amazon region is rainiest than the eastern part. The temperatures vary mostly between 23 °C and 27 °C. Andes The Ecuadorian Andes is a mountain range between 1.500 meters and 6.310 meters high. Most of the cities in the Andes are located at an altitude between 2.000 and 3.000 meters. The temperature in the cities varies mostly between 15 °C and 20 °C. The drier season in the Andes is in the months of June, July, August, and September. Pacific Coast The northwest coast of Ecuador has a wet tropical seasonal climate. The wet season is from December through May. Along the Ecuadorian coast, rainfall drops from north to south. To the south, the climate becomes increasingly drier. There is a rainy season in the first months of the year and an almost dry season from May to December. The temperatures vary from 25 °C to 31 °C. Galapagos Islands The climate of the Galápagos Islands is subtropical. There is a warm season from December through May and a cool season from June through November. The warm season is characterized by a mixture of warmth, rain, and sun. The cool season is a mixture of cloudy, cool, and dry weather. This variation is caused by ocean currents. The temperatures vary from 21 °C in August and September to 28 °C in March and April.

Do I need a passport/visa?
You need a passport with a validation of at least 6 months upon return in Europe or the USA. You can stay in Ecuador without a visa for 90 days every 12 months.

What is the local currency?
The local currency in Ecuador is the US Dollar. You can use your credit card in the main tourist areas and in the big hotels. In the ATM, your European or American cards usually work, but there is a maximum of 500 USD that you can take each day. We advise you to bring dollars in cash. In Ecuador, you only get 5, 10, or 20 USD bills out from the ATM. Also, change is a big problem, so please be careful when you carry 50 and 100 USD bills.
