Tour Overview

Byron christened it ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’, George Bernard Shaw ‘Paradise on Earth’, to us it’s simply idyllic. Naturally beautiful, historically fascinating and wonderfully Mediterranean.

Discover Croatia, a land where history and natural beauty come together along one of Europe’s most stunning coastlines. From the ancient Roman, Venetian, and Habsburg influences that shaped its architecture to its strikingly preserved medieval towns, Croatia is a feast for the senses. Begin your journey exploring Krka National Park’s cascading waterfalls, then follow the Dalmatian coast to Split, where Roman and medieval history live side by side. Wander the ancient lanes of Trogir before a visit to Mali Ston for a taste of Croatia’s renowned wine.

Dubrovnik, known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” will captivate you with its medieval streets and baroque charm. Spend a day wandering its cobbled alleys, soaking in the warm Mediterranean air. With warm, welcoming locals and cuisine inspired by Greece and Italy, featuring fresh seafood, local produce, and Mediterranean flavours, Croatia promises an unforgettable experience at every turn.

Highlights

  • Visit two magnificent Croatian cities on guided tours: Dubrovnik - with its medieval and baroque centre, and Split - including Emperor Diocletian's monumental palace, one of the greatest ancient Roman structures.

  • Discover the beauty of Krka National Park and its series of stunning waterfalls and lakes.

  • Enjoy visits to the port town of Trogir, the ancient town of Cavtat, and a traditional watermill in the fertile Konavle valley with the chance to taste its regional specialities.

  • Explore the Dalmatian coastline, one of Europe’s most dramatic, studded with Venetian influence, and perfectly preserved villages.

  • Visit the Peljesac peninsula, where you can enjoy a tasting of locally produced cheeses, prosciutto, and wine at a family wine cellar, as well as time to explore medieval Mali Ston.

Day 1

Location: Croatia

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Arrival in Croatia

Day 2

Location: Krka

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Krka Valley - After breakfast we drive inland to the Krka Valley, home to an immensely impressive sequence of lakes, where water cascades dramatically from one to the next via vertiginous interlocking waterfalls. Minerals dissolved in the water trigger stunning colour changes, from turquoise to azure-blue and from vibrant green to steely grey. With reflections of the majestic surrounding peaks and luxuriant forests rippling on lake surfaces, it’s impossible not to be awestruck.

You’ll witness one of the most dramatic stretches of the river as you walk past several tiers of waterfalls tumbling magnificently into a broad, shallow pool, before we take a boat trip along the river. There’s ample time to absorb the surroundings before we return to our hotel during the afternoon.
Signature experience -
After a day of truly spectacular discoveries share your experiences over an aperitif and local canapés in the comfortable surroundings of the hotel.

Day 3

Location: Trogir, Split

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Split & Trogir - We drive along stunning Dalmatian coastline on our way to Split. Croatia’s second-largest city is most famous for a single building, the colossal palace of Emperor Diocletian, which makes up much of the city’s Old Town. It’s one of the great structures of the Roman Empire and has survived in amazing condition since it was built at the turn of the 4th century. A guided walking tour this morning of the fascinating complex will bring its storied history to life.
We visit the nearby medieval citadel of Trogir, one of the most beguiling little ports in Dalmatia. The Old Town is actually an island. A wealth of Renaissance and Romanesque buildings line a veritable maze of charmingly chaotic lanes. At the centre is the exquisite Cathedral of Saint Lawrence, whose long cycle of construction is reflected in its contrasting architectural features.

Wander where your feet take you, cast an eye over one of the many antique shops or just enjoy a coffee in a pavement café – the choice is yours, before returning to the hotel in time for dinner.

Day 4

Location: Mostar

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Mali Ston - On our journey from the airport on day one, we'll have driven through the Peljesac peninsula and over the bridge to Omis. The bridge - which opened in 2022 - significantly cuts down the time it takes to go to the northern half of Croatia, as there's no longer a need to pass through the Bosnian border. While we didn't stop here on day one, today we'll take the opportunity to explore the peninsula properly as we say goodbye to our hotel in Omis and head to Mali Ston.

The Peljesac peninsula is renowned for its beautiful scenery, vineyards and seafood. Of the charming towns and villages on the peninsula, the medieval towns of Ston and Mali Ston are the most well-known - famous for salt, city walls and oysters.

Salt production has been a vital economic activity for centuries, with the oldest salt pans dating back over 4000 years in the Mediterranean. To safeguard this economic mainstay, a massive, fortified wall was constructed to protect the salt pans. Today, the surviving wall spans over 4.3 miles making it the second-longest wall globally, after the Great Wall of China.

On arrival, we visit a traditional family-run wine cellar. Here, we'll immerse ourselves in the authentic flavours of Ston and Mali Ston. Sample a variety of flavourful cheeses, including specialities like Pag cheese, alongside thinly sliced, melt-in-your-mouth prosciutto and renowned local wines. Our hosts will guide us through a selection of delicious local wines, sharing their knowledge and stories. This unforgettable experience offers an authentic taste of the region, connecting you with its culinary heritage and leaving lasting memories. Afterwards, there'll be the opportunity to explore Mali Ston. Wander the medieval streets and squares, take in the view of the bay or - if you're not full already - visit one of the family-run restaurants and cafes. Top tip:  If oysters are your thing, you'll find some of the best in Europe here. The tradition of oyster farming in Mali Ston has survived since Roman times, and they'll be fresh from local oyster beds.

After free time, we continue to Dubrovnik, where we stay for four nights.

Day 5

Location: Dubrovnik

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Dubrovnik - Dubrovnik, an independent city-state for much of its history, has evolved differently to the rest of Croatia. This morning, we take a tour with an expert local guide explaining the city’s landmarks and intriguing history. Dubrovnik threw off its Venetian masters in medieval times and founded a commercial empire, trading with the eastern Mediterranean, France, Spain and, later, the Ottoman Empire.

The economic boom that resulted in the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’ found beautiful expression in the likes of the Rector’s Palace, now a museum, and Sponza Palace, currently housing centuries of historical city documents. The main avenue, lined by enticing shops and cafés, is completely paved with marble, which strikingly reflects the midday sun. Add in a wonderful array of monasteries and monumental ramparts and you’ll find this is a wonderful city, nestling in a location of outstanding natural beauty.

You are free to explore before we return to the hotel for dinner.

Day 6

Location: Dubrovnik

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Free day in Dubrovnik - You have the day to yourselves, so what is it to be? Watching the world go by as you have a leisurely lunch in the main square? Enjoying a cruise around the harbour? A stroll around the city walls that once protected the city’s inhabitants, but now offer unbeatable views? The options are many and the choice is yours.
Signature experience -
For an alternative view of Dubrovnik take the cable car ride to the top of Mount Srd. You can enjoy this experience at any time to suit you, although watching the sun set into the sea from this spectacular vista must be a highlight. As you ride high above the rooftops of Dubrovnik the views of the old town and the Dalmatian coastline beyond will take your breath away. At the summit you may choose to relax with a drink and a bite to eat or perhaps visit the Homeland War Museum, a poignant reminder of the 1991-1995 war.

Day 7

Location: Cavtat, Konavle

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Konavle & Cavtat - This morning we drive south away from the rugged coast around Dubrovnik and through the lush fields and immaculate vineyards of Konavle, Croatia’s southernmost region nestled between the mesmerising blue Adriatic Sea and the dramatic mountains. This fertile land became the main granary of the Dubrovnik Republic and has produced grapes, olives and even silk for hundreds of years. Dotting the landscape are villages with centuries-old stone houses, where traditional farming methods and crafts are still very much a part of modern life.

The rivers that flow through the valley encouraged the construction of mills for agricultural development over the centuries, but today only three remain operational. We visit one of these faithfully restored watermills to learn how woollen cloth was produced here – the traditional processes of spinning, weaving and stamping are fascinating. Afterwards we enjoy a welcome drink made with homemade liqueurs, figs, sugared orange, lemon peels and candied almonds, as well as a selection of local cheeses, prosciutto, bread and wine for which Konavle is renowned.
We then visit Cavtat, a picturesque town on the Adriatic Coast set amidst an evergreen forest of pine and cypress trees. The charming harbour, lined with palm trees has been compared to St Tropez, it is the perfect place to relax and watch the world go by from one of the many cafes and restaurants.
Signature experience -
For a taste of typical rural life travel into the heart of the lush countryside of Konavle where your welcoming hosts, the Novaković family, will show you around the farm and their wonderful garden. You’ll be served with a selection of delicious seasonal dishes, created with fresh, home cultivated ingredients, cooked over fire from traditional recipes passed down through the family for generations. You’ll also have time to discover the wine cellar and explore the small museum which provides an insight into the history and tradition of this fascinating region.

Day 8

This review is for the italian Lake Como trip Aug 1-8 Wow what a trip. Riviera from start to finish were excellent the booking and help line answering questions were very good and clear. The travel booklet you get is laid out that it is simple to read and follow with step by step info from booking in to flights to meeting the guides. Our guide Matt Purse was just the best guide and real credit to Riviera with his knowledge and straight forward approach to running the trips. Matt kept us informed and told us all the sort of info you want to know without going over the top....This chap should teach other reps ..thank you so much. The coaches they use are all clean and well equipped with usb chargers and have aircon. The places chosen to visit were well researched even down to where coaches park or drop you off. The Bernina Express was the highlight for our family and matts photo tip was welcomed. The only down point was the hotel,a little dated and evening meal in main restuarant was a bit of a let down. I think we were lucky with our room on level 7 and with balcony as the walls are very thin and noise travels. We would book again with riviera

Just returned from my first Riviera tour ,Valencia and the orange grove coast for solo travellers an̈d despite challenges due to two public holidays and things closing, it was managed excellently by the tour manager. Would not hesitate to use Riviera again. Pleased to find a replacement after very bad service from Titan in the past.

What a fantastic holiday to Canada on the Rocky Mountaineer & Alaska Cruise. If you are thinking of booking this do it right now. From start to finish everything was great. The hotels, the transport and the cruise. The rep was absolutely fabulous. If you have ‘B’ as your rep you will make a friend. She is so full of knowledge. We went on this trip with strangers and left it as friends.

Thankyou Riviera and all the staff on the William Wordsworth Danube River cruise. My husband and i have just travelled on the Danube to celebrate my husbands 60th and we had such a lovely experience. We were younger than most of the travellers but we met so many lovely people so this wasnt a problem. The staff were so lovely and professional. The service we experienced was so high. The boat was beautiful, the food amazing and the excursions were informative and well managed. I would definately recommend riviera as a company. In fact we are now considering their Japan holiday.

First River Cruise and the first time with Riviera but it won't be the last. The holiday exceeded our expectations. From the reps we spoke to when booking, to the staff and crew on board, they were all very friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. Everything was well organised and made for a very enjoyable holiday. The boat was very clean, plenty of space in the cabin and on deck and the food was some of the best I have ever tasted. Plenty to see along the Rhine, with castles, towns passing by at a nice sedate pace and watching the other craft using the Rhine. Highly recommend.

We would go again in a heartbeat

22-Jan-2022

Oh my goodness, what a relief it was to actually get away! Full marks to all at Riviera for keeping us up to date before our trip and for the help so cheerfully and patiently given with the extra admin that Covid brought our way. We felt totally safe with the measures taken on board, thank you very much for this. Without exception, Staff were fantastic and our every need was attended to. The additional Covid testing ran smoothly, organised by our Riviera Reps. The guided tours were most interesting: the guides very knowledgeable and more importantly, interesting to listen to. We loved this trip and would do it again in a heartbeat. Thank you again Riviera, you were FAB!

Presently in Croatia staying at Arauana Hotel, supposedly a 4 star property, but wouldn't give it any star rating. Rooms are small and dirty. Wallpaper blistering. Meals served in a shed like lean-to. Food like warm, greasy and always self service. Second holiday with Riviera this year and neither at standard advertised. Have travelled with them previously and everything was fine, but standards have really dropped. Have booked a holiday with them next year and now dreading it. Certainly don't provide the standard advertised. We have never stayed in such a hovel and have visited youngsters in back packers accommodation which was far better than this supposedly 4 star accommodation. There are no indoor bars or lounges only a shed as a so called restaurant. Absolutely disgusting. Won't be boking with them again
