Itinerary

Expand All

Day 1 : Mollepata - Challacancha - Soraypampa - Humantay Lake

Location: Humantay Lake, Cuzco Main Square, SORAYPAMPA, Mollepata

Accommodation: Camp

Meals Included: Lunch, Dinner, Snacks and Water

Wake up early to set off on your adventure. You'll travel to Mollepata for a quick breakfast and keep on to our starting point in Challacancha. You'll start with a 3-hour relatively flat hike to Soraypampa, the place of our first Camp. You'll have enough time to grab a snack and settle in your igloo.

In the afternoon, you'll be hiking up to the iconic Humantay Lake on a 3-hour round twisting trail to the top. The views once there pay all the effort, as you'll be able to watch this glacier gem and the Humantay Peak from the upper parts. Back at Camp, you'll share a sumptuous dinner with your group. Then, you'll head to bed and fall asleep gazing at the stars through your glass-roofed igloo.

Day 2 : Soraypampa - Salkantay Pass - Wayracmachay - Chaullay

Location: Chaullay Sky Domes, SORAYPAMPA, Montaña Salkantay

Accommodation: Camp

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snacks and Water

This is the most challenging day as you conquer the trek's highest point, the Salkantay Pass (4,630 m / 15,190 ft). It'll be 4 hours to reach the top, but your reward is the stunning views over the Salkantay Mountain, the surrounding Andean peaks, and plenty of time for photoshoots.

You'll later walk downhill to touch the green borders of the Cloud Forest and experience the drastic climate change between the snow peaks and the edge of the jungle. After a midway lunch, end this day at the next Campsite in Chaullay for another great dinner and sleep in the Andean Huts.

Day 3 : Chaullay - La Playa - Hidroelectrica - Aguas Calientes

Location: Chaullay Sky Domes, Aguas Calientes, La Playa

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snacks and Water

This morning, you'll hike to the next stop, La Playa, and immerse yourself in the high jungle. Chock-full of wildlife, this section will test your eyes, as you'll be able to spot birds and wild orchids only found here. Next, the last lunch on the spot is in La Playa. You'll then stop at a nearby coffee farm to learn with the locals how to harvest, and grind your own grains for a cup.

After the experience, a short drive takes you to Hidroelectrica train station. You can either continue the 3-hour scenic hike on the rail tracks alongside the Urubamba River or pay an extra fee to take the train to Aguas Calientes. You'll check in to your hotel or simply explore the town on your own. Tonight, you'll eat dinner at a restaurant and sleep early enough to wake up before dawn tomorrow.

Day 4 : Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Ollantaytambo - Cusco

Location: Cusco, Inca City of Machu Picchu, Ollantaytambo

Meals Included: Breakfast

Today's to round off this trip at Machu Picchu. Before the large groups arrive, you'll rise before the sun to take the first bus to the World Wonder. You'll enjoy a 2-3 hour tour in the morning and cover the hot spots with your guide before having more time to explore. You can also go on the extra mountain hikes (Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu) to get unrivaled summit views of the Citadel.

In the afternoon, you'll head down to Aguas Calientes and have time to eat lunch in a restaurant of your choice before boarding the train to Ollantaytambo. From there, our private transport takes you back directly to your hotel in Cusco.

5 day Salkantay hike - excellent guide

06-Sep-2023

Erik our guide and the entire team Urbano, Victorino and Daniel made the entire trekking experience excellent. It was well organised from the brief the night before, to daily snack bags being provided, and spots for pictures or informative history and cultural sessions. Highly recommend using Salkantay Trekking and in particular Erik.

Definitely Recommend 🙌🏻✨

I’m used to traveling solo but thought it might be wise to have a more guided trek since the terrain here can be more challenging. Best decision ever. Carlos was an experienced guide. The crew of chefs and horsemen (Heber, Julio Cesar and Osvaldo) were so helpful and thoughtful. I even had gluten-free options at every meal! I’m 58 and somewhat fit so this hike was challenging and oh so rewarding. The views, the camps, the group camaraderie- everything so worthwhile. Highly recommend.
