Day 1

Location: North East Derbyshire District

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Delta Hotels by Marriott Breadsall Priory Hotel

Meals Included: Dinner

Make your own way to our hotel in North Derbyshire where you will meet an experienced Tour Manager, before enjoying a relaxing evening with dinner.

Day 2 The Monsal Trail

Location: Monsal Trail

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Delta Hotels by Marriott Breadsall Priory Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, we will board our coach and travel to Wye Dale, where we will begin our walk on the Monsal Trail. The trail stretches from Wye Dale to Bakewell and incorporates the former Midland Railway line that once linked Matlock to Buxton. Constructed in the 1860s, it ceased operating as a railway line in 1968. In 1981, an eight-mile section was opened for pedestrians. As we walk along this former railway line, we'll come across old stations, former railway tunnels, and the magnificent Monsal Viaduct, which was a scenic highlight of the midland line. Our walk concludes at Hassop Station, which was originally built for the Duke of Devonshire and opened in 1862. Nowadays, it is a bustling location serving refreshments to walkers who have completed this magnificent trail.

This is an easy 8-mile walk lasting approximately 4.5 hours. There is an option to shorten this – your Tour Manager and local guides will provide details if required.

We will return to our hotel by coach and enjoy a well-deserved dinner this evening.

Day 3 Chatsworth Estate to Bakewell

Location: Bakewell

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Delta Hotels by Marriott Breadsall Priory Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We'll have breakfast at our hotel before boarding the coach to Chatsworth Estate, where we will begin our walk alongside the River Derwent towards Chatsworth House. The estate has been the residence of the Dukes of Devonshire for many generations, having been purchased by Elizabeth and William Cavendish in 1549 for £600. Over the following generations, the house has undergone many transformations and has become the magnificent structure that we see today. As we make our way towards Edensor, we will leave behind the grandeur of the house and venture into this charming little village. Edensor is linked to the Cavendish family, with St. Peter's Church is the main burial ground of the family.

Our route then takes us through New Piece Wood, where we will be rewarded with scenic views back towards the Chatsworth Estate. We will continue our journey through Calton Pastures until we reach Manner Wood, where we will descend towards Bakewell. We will cross the River Wye and arrive in Bakewell, the only true town in the Peak District National Park. Here, you will have ample time to explore – why not try the famous Bakewell Tart or the more traditional Bakewell Pudding?

This is an easy to moderate 5-mile walk lasting approximately 3 hours.

Then, we will return to our hotel by coach for our evening meal.

Day 4 Walking in Dovedale and the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway

Location: Dovedale

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Delta Hotels by Marriott Breadsall Priory Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today, we will explore the stunning limestone countryside in the southern Peak District. After breakfast, we will board our coach and travel to Alstonefield where our walk will commence. We head down to Milldale and join the path along the River Dove, which marks the boundary between Derbyshire and Staffordshire. Dovedale, a beautiful limestone gorge in the river Dove Valley, is a National Nature Reserve due to the number of rare habitats and wildlife found here. Our delightful riverside walk passes two caves, Dove Holes, and travels over Lover's Leap. We will follow the river across meadows to Coldwall Bridge, before picking up the Manifold trail that leads to Ilam Park. Owned by the National Trust, Ilam Park has a small visitor centre and tearooms, making it the perfect conclusion to our walk.

Afterwards, our coach will transfer us to Wirksworth station where we'll board the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway for a picturesque rail journey from Wirksworth to Duffield. During the journey, we'll take in the beautiful scenery of the Peak District.

This is an easy 6.5-mile walk lasting approximately 3.5 hours. There is an option to shorten this – your Tour Manager and local guides will provide details if required.

Our coach will then collect us from Duffield and return us to our hotel for a relaxing final dinner.

Check out our Q&As

  • Will there be an escort accompanying this tour?

You can be assured of a high level of service and reliability from our expert-trained coach crews, who will be on hand to assist and escort you along the way

  • Are airport transfers included in this tour?

    No

  • Are the local guides on the tour English speaking?

    Yes

  • Is there any free time to explore places during the tour?

    As detailed in the itinerary

  • Is the tour coach air conditioned?

    Yes

  • What is the fitness level required to do this tour?

All of our walks are of an easy-moderate nature and therefore we recommend that you have a reasonable level of fitness. It is also important to ensure you bring the right equipment with you, and for our walking tours we would recommend: a pair of good quality walking boots, weather appropriate clothing with layers, comfortable rucksack, water bottle, and walking poles (not essential but can aid climbs and descents).

  • Is there a limit to luggage that can be brought on the tour?

Your allowance is one medium sized suitcase per person, which should weigh no more than 20kg when full. Hand luggage should be stored in the overhead racks aboard the coach.

  • Will I know the names and details of all the accommodation before I depart?

    Yes

  • Do I have to do the excursions?

Certain excursions are included in the price of your holiday. If you choose not to go on an included excursion, for whatever reason, no refunds will be made.

  • How much are the optional excursions?

This depends on which tour you book. Prices are given with the itinerary for the tour and sent out with Travel Documents 5 days before departure.

  • Do I need to have travel insurance?

If you are a British citizen and are going on a UK holiday, you are not required to have insurance. If you are a non-British citizen and are going on a UK holiday, you are required to have an insurance policy in place or return a signed indemnity form to us prior to travel. For all travellers on European tours, you must either have a travel insurance policy in place or return a signed insurance indemnity form to us prior to travel.

  • Will there be a toilet on-board the coach?

All main tour coaches have on-board toilets. Transfer vehicles to and from the interchange may not have on-board toilets.

  • Can I pay for the optional excursions when I make my booking?

Optional excursions can be booked with your coach driver or Tour Manager and operate strictly subject to availability and demand. Some optional excursions are pre-bookable due to demand when making your reservation. The running order of included and optional excursions may be altered without prior notice.

  • Do you operate a “single share” option and how does it work?

No, we do not. However, we only ever charge a supplement if a hotelier imposes this charge to us as a company. Single room supplements are a bone of contention within the travel industry and we would like to assure you that we proactively seek accommodation with low or no single room supplements for our guests.

  • What documents will I receive before I travel?

You will receive a detailed itinerary alongside travel documents, and these will be sent 5 days prior to travel.

We really enjoyed our trip to Dusseldorf and Cologne . Kelvin and Olivia were great , we felt very safe and well informed and well looked after throughout. The lads on our feeder coach were great too. Never heard anybody complain at all.

01-Oct-2022

Good trip to Edinburgh, my preference would have been for longer time at the day trips but with a wide age range on the coach I feel the compromise for the comfort of all was paramount. The coach driver was knowledgeable and happy to offer suggestions of places to see and things to do. A star is knocked off for a single supplement being charged on a single room but I accept this could be out of the control of Shearings and down to the hotel.

Just had a Holiday to Weston Super Mare and stayed at The Great Atlantic Hotel. It was OK but the Lift is out of order and not likely to be working any time soon. Food was ok too.The journey was also OK but a bit cramped. Driver was pleasant and the coach changes were efficient.

I've been trying to cancel...

09-Feb-2025

I've been trying to cancel a trip to Paris in April 25 for months. I literally cancelled less than 14 days after the £1 deposit was taken. This was back on 8th September, I have emailed 3 times spoke to 2 people and both told me it was policy to still charge for a holiday I cancelled!! Today I have proof as they have just tried to steal over £800 from my bank. Luckily I'm with a bank that's up on scams of the £1 deposit ! BEWARE you are handing your bank details over to these people. I am in total shock and been advised to take it further.
