Tour Overview

Explore the best of New England on a journey through its picturesque heart, discovering new insights into landmark sites and historic homes, where country farms and nature's dramatically contrasting vistas evoke the spirit of a place whose ideas shaped America.

Classic New England lives in Boston Common, in the White Mountains aglow with autumn colors, in the general store, the diamond at Fenway Park, and the sustainable soil of Billings Farm... the drama of the rugged Maine coast... in Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ studio where images of American heroes were forged, in millwheels, covered bridges, and white-steepled churches, and the rocky soil that has long been fertile ground for thinkers, artists, writers, inventors, entrepreneurs and Revolutionaries. This is, as Dayton Duncan observes, Ken Burns’s backyard: “New England has always had a special place in American history and American thought. And New England has become Ken Burns’s backyard – not just the place where he’s raised his family and made his documentaries in the classic New England town of Walpole, New Hampshire, but also a place intertwined with many of the stories he’s told: Mark Twain, Baseball, The Civil War and The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. It’s a distinct region with its own beauty and its own secret treasures – and who better to share them but one of its proudest residents.”

Itinerary

Expand All
Day 1: Welcome To Boston
Location: Boston, Massachusetts, USA
Accommodation Name: The Westin Copley Place, Boston
Meals Included: Dinner

Tour begins: 5:30 PM, The Westin Copley Place, Boston. A transfer is included from Logan International Airport to The Westin Copley Place, Boston. Please join us this evening for a welcome reception at the hotel, followed by a welcome dinner at a local restaurant in the heart of Boston.

Day 2: Fenway Park, Historic Boston & A Foodie Walk
Location: Boston, Massachusetts, USA
Accommodation Name: The Westin Copley Place, Boston
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

In his films Baseball and The Tenth Inning, Ken Burns offers a glimpse into the soul of our “national pastime”; for many, it lives at Fenway Park, America’s oldest ballpark and home of the Boston Red Sox since 1912. Past glories come alive on a walking tour of the stadium that may include some its most famous landmarks, such as the Triangle, Pesky’s Pole, the former location of Duffy’s Cliff, and the legendary Green Monster of left field. Next, an orientation tour of the city follows the historic Freedom Trail from the Back Bay’s Copley Square to Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ memorial to Col. Robert Gould Shaw in Boston Common, the State House, the Old North Church, the Old State House and the South Meeting House. Follow lunch at the Union Oyster House with a “foodie” walking and tasting tour at Boston Public Market.

Day 3: Lexington & Concord And On To The Berkshires
Accommodation Name: Hotel On North
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Depart the city of Boston for the nearby flashpoint of the American Revolution, the Massachusetts towns of Lexington and Concord. First, travel to the Lexington Battle Green, where the “shot heard ‘round the world” that signaled the beginning of hostilities was fired; and Concord’s Old North Bridge and iconic Minuteman statue, cast from the bronze of Civil War cannons, in Minute Man National Historic Park. Head west across the center of Massachusetts, stopping for lunch en route to the city of Pittsfield in the Berkshires, for a late afternoon arrival at your boutique hotel created from a pair of 19th-century commercial buildings on the National Historic Register.

Day 4: Legacies Of Rockwell & The Shakers In The Berkshires
Location: Manchester, Vermont, USA
Accommodation Name: The Equinox Golf Resort & Spa
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Aglow with blazing foliage in autumn, the Berkshires of western Massachusetts have long been a retreat for artists and writers. Begin today's discoveries in Stockbridge at the Norman Rockwell Museum, dedicated to the beloved illustrator whose hundreds of covers for the Saturday Evening Post depicting scenes from small-town America – including here in Stockbridge, where he spent the last 25 years of his life – illuminated the lives of ordinary people with humor and pathos; view many original works by Rockwell, and visit his preserved studio. Next, head to Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield for a private “Lunch, Grace & Song” tour of this former Shaker settlement, founded in 1783 and active through 1960. Today it’s a living-history museum featuring 20 authentic Shaker buildings, costumed interpreters, rich collections of Shaker furniture and artifacts, a working farm with extensive gardens and heritage-breed livestock and more. Continue on to Manchester, Vermont, for an overnight at a historic New England mountain resort, The Equinox Golf Resort & Spa.

Day 5: Ken Burns's Backyard & Billings Farm
Location: Woodstock, Vermont, USA
Accommodation Name: Omni Mount Washington Resort
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Depart your Vermont resort and drive into the New Hampshire countryside for an exclusive insider look at Ken Burns’s private film studio in Walpole, where his Florentine Films was founded, and some free time in town. When railroad executive Frederick Billings (for whom the town in Montana is named) retired in 1871 and returned to his Woodstock, Vermont, roots to start a dairy farm, he opened a book called Man and Nature by George Perkins Marsh. Embracing its ideas of sustainable land use and forest conservation, within a few short years Billings had created a model farm whose cows and produce gained national attention. Hop back into Vermont and meet the Jersey cows at Billings Farm and Museum, and get a firsthand look at its farming and forestry methods, which changed ideas about farming in turn-of-the-century New England. Have lunch in town; in fall, indulge in autumnal panoramas of New Hampshire's White Mountains, arriving for a two-night stay at a true New England classic since 1902 – the spectacular Omni Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, a National Historic Landmark.

Day 6: Discovering The White Mountains
Location: Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, USA
Accommodation Name: Omni Mount Washington Resort
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Your day in the beautiful White Mountains starts with a “New Hampshire Maple Experience,” and a tasting of maple syrup, other maple sugar products, and homemade sour pickles. Back at the Omni Mount Washington, enjoy lunch and a free afternoon; if you wish, take a hotel history tour of your famous Bretton Woods resort, where you’ll have dinner at your leisure tonight.

Day 7: Charms Of Coastal Maine
Location: Ogunquit, Maine, USA
Accommodation Name: Stage Neck Inn
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

A wildlife talk at your White Mountains resort this morning offers an appreciation of the ecology of the glorious landscapes, summer and autumn, that you’ll journey through today as you wind your way to Maine. You'll arrive midday at Perkins Cove in Ogunquit, named by the Abenaki tribe, because the word means “beautiful place by the sea."  The area is known for its stunning walking trails – you'll have an opportunity to explore this quintessential coastal Maine region with a walk along the famed Marginal Way trail that hugs the sea. Originally developed in 1925, the trail is only 1.25 miles – with spectacular breathtaking vistas and iconic scenery. Arrive for an overnight stay at your oceanfront hotel; join us for a farewell reception and dinner.

Day 8: Journey Home
Location: Boston, Massachusetts, USA
Meals Included: Breakfast

Tour ends: Boston. Drive directly to Boston’s Logan International Airport from Stage Neck Inn after breakfast. Allow a minimum of two hours for flight check-in; flights should not be booked before 2:00 PM. The group transport will drop guests off at the airport and then drive 3.5 miles to drop off at Boston South Station (for trains).

Fall Foliage at its Best

27-Apr-2017

We had an outstanding experience on this trip. It's been a long-time wish to visit New England during the Fall for the colors, and we were thrilled to be there at just the right time. So different from Northern California! Our tour group was very congenial and our tour leader and driver made sure we were we'll taken care of. Great trip! We loved the visit to the farm and walking around the small towns. The visit to Ken Burn's studio was also a highlight and good memory.

A Unique View of New England

19-Oct-2017

Our trip was perfect in every way. Flights on time. Weather (for the most part) was perfect, in fact warm. Our tour director and driver were the very best. They were informative, knowledgeable, fun, and interested in us as well as helpful. The places we visited were ones I would never have experienced had I been traveling on my own. There were many, but seeing the fall colors in the mountains was just spectacular.

Gems of New England

Judy and myself absolutely loved this tour !!! We saw so much beauty and the professional staff of Tauck was impeccable Seeing all the wonderful color in the New England states we traveled

Hidden Gems of New England

22-Feb-2016

This was our third Tauck tour. It was just like our first two, outstanding in all respects. We experienced amazing scenery throughout the trip, large quantities of delicious food every day, and luxury accommodations. Looking forward to our fourth Tauck tour in May 2016 to California. Fenway Park in Boston

Best trip ever

16-Oct-2017

Our Tour Director made this trip a perfect 10. She was knowledgeable, entertaining and very well organized. The unadvertised additional “surprises” each day were really nice. I would recommend this trip to any and all. Ken Burns studio and hostess

Gems of New England is truly that...a real gem!

09-Oct-2016

What we liked about our small group trip to New England was that Tauck takes us places that we would never think to go ourselves, and in many cases could not go ourselves, and with the small group we are able to meet and get to know everyone on the trip. It is hard to describe just one memorable moment. I liked the personal tour of Fenway Park, the sugar house, the Mark Twain home, and the informative commentary provided by our tour director. And the interaction with the other guests, mostly at mealtime was wonderful.

Wonderful memories

10-Oct-2018

We just returned from the trip to Hidden Gems of New England and had a really good time. Every day was exciting and would have been better enjoyed only by having better weather. It rained three days! The weather was warm and windy in Boston, but got cooler as we traveled to Vermont. There were several memorable moments on the trip, but things that stand out in my memory was the Fenway Park Tour, touring Mark Twain's home and staying at the Mount Washington Resort in New Hampshire. We had very knowledgeable tour guides which made it interesting.

No longer Hidden Gems

03-Feb-2015

Great mix of N.E. hist, people and scenery, some previously "hidden" to us. Superb local guides! Fall foliage colors varied, many areas at peak. Meals good, Cliff House lobster- fantastic! With the demise of the Old Man of the Mountain, Franconia Notch has lost its appeal. Canterbury is OK if you haven't seen a Shaker village, it's not a Hancock #1 by far- Twain House tour. The Events Coordinator filled in as our group's guide- his incredible knowledge and passion for Clemens put him at the top of our guide list. #2 Ken Burn's studio and presentation by a producer. #3- Saint-Gaudens' home and ranger/guide. Though we are not big baseball fans, Fenway Park and our excellent guide were #4.

Hidden Gems Tour

04-Oct-2017

We had a great trip! Weather was much warmer than we planned for but that was good. Tour Director and bus driver were great. Very knowledgeable. Only negative was the food and service at Jackson Gore Inn. The rooms there were wonderful but not so with the food. All in all, we had a wonderful adventure! Tour of Fenway Park and tour of Mark Twains home.

Fine pace and places to visit.

07-Oct-2017

I liked all of the places we stayed except for the last night in Maine. The hotel was just not well designed, hallways were difficult to comprehend and too many became confused. The food was marginal and I would suggest Tauck not continue there. None of the 15 in the group liked it at all and they all liked the other hotels.
