Meals Included: Dinner

Tour begins: 5:15 PM, Grand Traverse Resort & Spa. A transfer is included from the Cherry Capital Airport to the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa in Traverse City, set amidst 900 acres of lush landscapes. Day 2: Dunes, Tall Ships & Wine On Lake Michigan's Coast
Location: Traverse City, Michigan, USA
Accommodation Name: Grand Traverse Resort & Spa
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

You might be surprised to learn on your Michigan tour that the state's western coast is a land of vineyards and sandy beaches as well as really impressive sand dunes. This morning you’ll see some of the spectacular Lake Michigan shoreline as you travel along the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive and through the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore; ranging in color from the palest champagne to vibrant sienna, the constantly shifting dunes can be as high as 400 feet! This afternoon, board the 114-foot schooner Manitou for a private tall ship cruise on the sparkling waters of Lake Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay. Wind up a great day with a winery tour and wine-pairing dinner at Chateau Chantal Winery on the Old Mission Peninsula in Grand Traverse Bay.

Day 3: Old-Time Music, Petoskey & Mackinac Island
Location: Mackinac Island, Michigan, USA
Accommodation Name: Grand Hotel
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

On your first stop today, music fills the air at the Music House Museum, displaying rare antique musical instruments and music-making machines from between 1870 and 1930; feel free to hum along during your visit! Then wind your way along the shoreline of beautiful Grand Traverse Bay as your Michigan tour continues toward the historic Straits of Mackinac; this strip of water connecting Lake Michigan and Lake Huron saw both booming commerce and some pretty spirited conflicts during the active fur-trading era of centuries ago. Stop in quaint Petoskey for lunch en route to Mackinaw City, from which a ferry carries you across the strategically important straits to historic Mackinac Island, where no cars are allowed... so you'll ride a horse-drawn carriage to your accommodation at the world-famous Grand Hotel, among the most celebrated hotels in America! This stately hotel's front porch, reputed to be the longest of its kind when it was built in 1887, is still a very popular gathering place for guests and local residents alike.

Day 4: Spend A Day On Magical Mackinac Island
Location: Mackinac Island, Michigan, USA
Accommodation Name: Grand Hotel
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

The tiny treasure known as Mackinac (pronounced "Mackinaw") Island remains much as it was when the first Europeans settled the island centuries ago. Folks get around here by foot, by bicycle or by horse... because motorized vehicles are not permitted on the island. Although the year-round human population is only about 600 residents, the horse population can be as high as 500 during the summer months! A sightseeing tour by horse-drawn carriage reveals all that is magical about Mackinac Island and is sure to be a highlight of your Michigan tour. You'll see Fort Mackinac, built by the British to guard the Straits of Mackinac during the American Revolution, as well as "downtown" Mackinac Island with many historic homes and grand Victorian cottages. You'll also learn more about your celebrated hotel at a presentation by a local resident historian who shares unique anecdotes about this famous landmark. The remainder of the day is yours to explore the island as you please; you're bound to discover things that capture your interest.

Day 5: An Architectural Gem In Midland
Accommodation Name: Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Bay City – Riverfront
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Leaving peaceful Mackinac Island behind via ferry to the mainland, continue on to Midland, where you’ll explore the home and studio of noted 20th-century architect Alden B. Dow, son of the founder of the Dow Chemical Company, who was a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. Dow's innovative use of geometric planes, angles and landscaping elements to integrate his home into its natural surroundings has earned the home the designation as a National Historic Landmark. Arrive late afternoon at your riverfront hotel in Bay City, where you'll have dinner at your leisure this evening.

Day 6: Bavarian Frankenmuth & The Henry Ford
Location: Dearborn and Detroit, Michigan, USA
Accommodation Name: The Dearborn Inn, a Marriott Hotel
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

You might think you've landed in Bavaria today when you visit the little village of Frankenmuth, founded by German pioneers in the 1840s, for lunch and some free time to poke around. Continue on to Dearborn, a city instrumental in America's automobile culture, where a guided visit to The Henry Ford is a fascinating, "must-do" experience on any Michigan tour. Historic trains, automobiles, airplanes and more help illustrate the American experience of progress and innovation between 1800 and 1950 – along with Dymaxion House, created by R. Buckminster Fuller; and the homes and workplaces of ground-breaking innovators such as Thomas Edison, the Wright Brothers and Harvey Firestone. Tonight you'll begin a two-night stay at The Dearborn Inn on the Ford Motor Company grounds. During dinner at the hotel tonight, enjoy a Tauck Exclusive – a private Motown musical performance by a live band.

Day 7: Dearborn, The Ford Rouge Factory & Detroit
Location: Dearborn and Detroit, Michigan, USA
Accommodation Name: The Dearborn Inn, a Marriott Hotel
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Begin the day with a look at a state-of-the-art automotive manufacturing facility when you take the impressive Ford Rouge Factory Tour in Dearborn, connecting the innovation of the past with the technology of the present and future. Then head to Detroit, where a city orientation tour introduces you to the "Motor City," historic home to the American automobile industry; see the Renaissance Center, Comerica Park (home of the Detroit Tigers), the Fox Theatre and more. Return to Dearborn, where the afternoon is free for your own further exploration and discovery amidst the living history and Americana of Greenfield Village; in true Tauck Style, when you take an included spin in a Model T, you won't have to pay for the gas! Please join us at our farewell cocktail reception and dinner this evening, and enjoy the opportunity to share your memories of your Michigan tour with those who shared the adventure with you.

Day 8: Journey Home
Location: Detroit, Michigan, USA

Reviews from Travellers on this Tour

Have considered this trip for several years.. glad we did it

14-Jul-2017

The pace and things to see and do were well balanced. Discovered a new area in America we had not visited before. From the Sleeping Bear Dunes to the Henry Ford Museum and everything between. Don't forget Mackinac Island... loved the horse carriage ride, porch and family atmosphere. Plus so much more. Seeing the air show for the July 4th weekend from the sailing ship for our afternoon cruise.

Rhine Enchantment Milan to Amsterdam

09-Aug-2018

This is by far one of the most memorable trips we have taken. Our first river cruise, and not to be our last. Tauck is so organized that they have anticipated your every need. Absolutely first class in every respect; food, accommodations and excursions. We will recommend and be a Tauck traveler again. The Tauck & local guides were very knowledge For sure the Last Supper, the lunch at Lake Como, castle in Heidelberg, and the UNESCO portion of the Rhine with the castles were all so amazing, it is so very difficult to pick just one with such a super packed trip...don’t miss this one for sure.

Michigan Tauck Trip

24-Aug-2016

Our Michigan trip was great. Great people, tour guide, and bus driver. We really enjoyed the different sites of Michigan from Traverse City, Mackinac Island, to the Henry Ford Museum and Village. Meals were also very good, with the welcome dinner, wine tasting, and farewell dinner as standouts. Our guide and driver were the best!! Sitting in a rocking chair, on the porch of the Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island.

Even better than expected!!

15-May-2018

As a frequent Tauck traveller going on my 1st River Cruise I expected a good experience. This seamless journey far exceeded my expectations. One great surprise after another on this floating 5 star Hotel. No detail not attended to. Tauck you've done it again!! There were many, however the Lunch at Isola Comacina on Lake Como was a highlight.

Visiting Michigan in the Summer

31-Aug-2017

We visited Michigan in July and, being from Florida, the cooler weather was delightful. We arrived in Traverse City and toured the area to see some wineries, had a short sail in the bay and visited Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park - a full day. We traveled to Mackinac City for the ferry to Mackinac Island which was the highlight of the trip. Touring Mackinac Island on horse drawn carriage and staying at the Grand Hotel was an experience we will never forget. When the tour concluded in Detroit, we visited the Henry Ford Museum and saw some national treasures like Rosa Parks bus and Lincoln's chair from the Ford Theater. A ride on a Model-T at Greenfield Village was a perfect ending.

Michigan Lakes

26-Jun-2017

Best part by far was our Tour guide. Smart, friendly, knowledgeable, always "on the go" and ready to answer any question and continually provided narration of where we were, where we were going and why. Our driver was a treasure as well. Hard working, great driver, always with a smile! Tour of home designed and built by son of Dow founder. The tour of the "Boulder" homes was special as well.

First Tauck Trip - Rhine River Cruise

06-Aug-2018

While we have traveled internationally before, this is the first time that we used Tauck. It was based on recommendation from our good friends who we traveled with. What impressed me about Tauck is their commitment to making each guest feel comfortable. It's difficult to find just one memorable moment. I enjoyed the trip to Lake Como, the leisurely travel on the Rhine River, and the charming cities of Heidelberg and Dusseldorf. Kudos to the ship's main chef for sharing with me her recipe for Dutch tomato soup. I can't wait to try it.

Memorable and Very Unique River Boat Experience

12-Jun-2018

Pro: spacious cabin with walk in closet, large double sink bathroom. Great food on board, phenomenal wine, service. One tour director was a hoot to talk with. All crew were very helpful. Been to Comar on business five times. Adding this town for 45 minutes was a waste. Too rushed and key sights missed. Do not fly KLM from Chicago- old!! Phenomenal scenery- and lunch on island in Lake Como. As a pro travel photographer (on vacation), I appreciated the great vistas of the Alps, Lake and Villas reflected in the water. Also had great scenery and photo opportunities from the ship as travelled through the Rhine Valley. Skip Dusseldorf and spend more time in the Alsace and Heidelberg.

Happy First Timers

04-Aug-2015

We celebrated our 50th Anniversary by finally letting someone else do the planning. We chose the best as recommended by FL and NC experienced touring friends. Michigan was much more than we expected! On our own, we would have missed the Music Museum, the Dow home tour, the island tour, and the great companions we met! We are sold on Tauck! Laughing and sharing this experience and others with the interesting and inspiring travelers Tauck attracts.
