Tour Overview
A country of such superlatives, choosing South Africa’s highlights is not easy. On our unforgettable South Africa tours we show you some of our favourites, from a magical dawn safari to a Garden Route road trip to a traditional barbecue (braai) with Zulu entertainment. We’ll round our trip off with three luxurious nights in Cape Town, where we’ll get a bird’s-eye view of the city from the top of Table Mountain and watch the Boulders Beach penguins waddle their way to the shore.
Highlights
Itinerary
Day 1
Location: Johannesburg
Titan’s VIP door-to-door travel service collects you from home for your overnight flight to Johannesburg.
Day 2
Location: Sandton
This morning we arrive into Johannesburg. After a short tour of the nation’s capital, Pretoria, we visit the Voortrekker Monument, the dramatic memorial to the Boer pioneers who ventured into South Africa’s interior. Later, we invite you to join your fellow travellers for welcome drinks.
Day 3
Location: Kruger National Park
Today we encounter Africa’s big skies and wide-open spaces. We travel eastwards to the Drakensberg Escarpment, which separates the Highveld Plateau from the low country. Here, amidst some of South Africa’s most stunning scenery, we reach Pilgrim’s Rest, a former gold rush town where time has very nearly stood still. Then (weather permitting), we stop for incredible views at God’s Window, down into the Lowveld below.
Day 4
Location: Kruger National Park
We set out for one of the greatest experiences that South Africa holidays offer. Kruger National Park is world-renowned as the best place to go for a safari. Along the outer reaches is Mala Mala Game Reserve. It’s one of the oldest and more established private reserves, and offers the ultimate safari experience.
Rangers take us to our lodge, deep in the African bush, on the borders of Kruger National Park. Later, we head out for our first afternoon game drive in a ranger-handled open safari vehicle. Expect to get close to lions, elephants and rhinos, and watch stately giraffes striding by. We’ll watch the sun set with a ‘sundowner’ tipple, before some more nocturnal game viewing.
We enjoy dinner in a reed-enclosed boma then retire to our luxurious African-style rondavels.
Day 5
Location: Eswatini
Today we depart for an early morning game drive. At this time of the day the bush offers a totally different experience and, if we’re lucky, we may be able to spot the elusive leopard. Afterwards, there’s an opportunity to take an optional walking safari. An afternoon game drive takes place later.
Day 6
Location: Mkuze
After another early game drive, we bid farewell to Mala Mala and continue with our journey. We'll travel south into landlocked Eswatini (Swaziland), with its rolling sugar cane fields and stunning mountain scenes and stay overnight.
Day 7
Location: Mkuze
We continue south to Golela and cross into South Africa’s Zululand District, in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Once in Mkuze, you have the rest of the day to enjoy the glorious gardens and tranquil surrounds, and views of the legendary Ghost Mountain.
Day 8
Location: uMhlanga
After a morning perhaps enjoying the hotel pool, we embark on a game drive in the uMkhuze Game Reserve. It encompasses a wide range of habitats perfect for big game wildlife and a wide variety of bird species. In the evening, we enjoy a traditional barbecue (braai) with Zulu entertainment.
Day 9
Location: Durban
Today you can spend the entire day relaxing poolside. Or take an optional excursion to see Lake Jozini.
Day 10
Location: Tsitsikamma National Park
This morning we take a cruise in iSimangaliso Wetland Park, along the wetlands of Lake St Lucia in search of hippos, crocodiles and birdlife. Later we continue south to Durban airport for our flight to Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), where we stay overnight.
Day 11
Location: Knysna
We commence our journey along the beautiful Garden Route. It’s a scenic highlight of holidays to South Africa, stopping at Tsitsikamma National Park, part of the Garden Route National Park. Here we explore the pristine coastline of Storms River mouth and lush indigenous forest, which make this area so famous.
We arrive in Knysna later, beautifully situated on a lagoon.
Day 12
Location: Oudtshoorn
After a leisurely start, we board MV John Benn for a spectacular Knysna lagoon cruise, including lunch.
Day 13
Location: Arniston
You’re free to explore Knysna at your own pace. Numerous restaurants, teahouses and boutique shops surround the beautiful natural harbour. It’s an ideal spot to sample some of the finest seafood in the fresh air whilst watching the sailing boats crossing the lagoon to the open sea, through Knysna Heads. Alternatively you can take an optional guided tour that includes the Featherbed Nature Reserve and a tasty lunch.
Day 14
Location: Arniston
This morning we visit the interesting Outeniqua Transport Museum, in George, where we view the large selection of steam locomotives and rolling stock. Later we take the Outeniqua Powervan, a diesel railcar, up into the scenically stunning mountains to enjoy lunch and a tour of the Safari Ostrich Farm.
Day 15
Location: Hermanus
We’ll travel via the arid plains of the Karoo to the Huis River Pass and re-join the coast at Hermanus. Whales can be spotted here September-November (fingers crossed). We then follow the stunning coastal route to reach Cape Town and our lovely hotel on the Victoria & Alfred waterfront.
Day 16
Location: Cape Town
We set out on a tour of the city positioned in one of the finest natural settings on earth. The great backdrop of Table Mountain, flanked by Devil’s Peak and Lion’s Head, forms a natural sanctuary and dramatic landmark. We take an exhilarating trip by cable car to the top of Table Mountain (weather permitting). Then you’re free to explore or join an optional winelands tour.
Day 17
Location: Cape Town
This morning we head to the beautiful fishing village of Hout Bay, then onwards to the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point lighthouse. Later we visit Simon’s Town, an important naval base for more than two centuries (first for the Royal Navy and now the South African Navy). We also visit Boulders Beach; here you will find a colony of African penguins, which have settled in the small coves since 1985.
Day 18
Location: Cape Town
Transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK.
Day 19
Location: United Kingdom
Upon arrival your Titan vehicle will be waiting for the journey home.
