The Holy See takes centre stage today as we join a Local Specialist for a sightseeing tour that will see us visit the 16th-century St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City and witness Michelangelo's sorrowful Pietà, a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture. We cross the Tiber into Ancient Rome to delve into what was once the largest empire in the world and view such ancient sites as the imposing Colosseum where brave gladiators and slaves duelled to their deaths. Consider an Optional Experience to gain VIP access to see the magnificent frescoes inside the Sistine Chapel and VIP entry into the Colosseum. The romantic island city of Venice is our final destination today. We take to San Marco's waters, cruising the canals and admiring views of the imposing St. Mark's Basilica and ornate Doge's Palace. On this MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience, we’ll Dive Into Culture and witness the centuries-old art of Venetian glassblowing using the same techniques that have been passed down through the generations. We depart Venice, travelling north into the picturesque Italian and Swiss Lake Districts via Como and Lugano. "Alicante is the perfect size; the city centre with bars, restaurants and shops is only a few minutes walk from the amazing beach and waterfront where you can sunbathe, swim and relax!"

"Be sure to climb the historic Santa Barbara Castle above the town centre for panoramic views. Take some drinks and enjoy the sunset for a true Alicante experience!"

Favourite time of year to visit Alicante

"Spring or Autumn are both great times to visit, the weather is warm and sunny. There are also fewer tourists about so you can better enjoy the beaches and bars."

What else can I see in the area?

"The whole coastline north and south of Alicante is stunning, with sandy beaches and amazing rock formations, or you can take a day trip on the ferry to the heavenly island of Tabarca!"

Favourite way to spend a day in Alicante?

"Head to the beach and play some volleyball at the free public nets, jump in the sea to cool off between games and then stroll to a local bar for tapas and a jug of tinto de verano in the evening."
