Tour Overview

Famed as the base for the European Parliament, Strasbourg lies halfway between Prague and Paris and is often referred to as the “crossroads of Europe” and it is no surprise that its rich and varied artistic and architectural legacy bears witness to its strategic importance over centuries. This tour looks at its artistic heritage from Empire to Art Nouveau in the expert hands of Prof. Anne or Scott Anderson and will visit the delightful Alsace town of Colmar and cross the border into Germany to historic Karlsruhe.

Itinerary

Day 1: Travel by Eurostar and TGV from St Pancras or Ebbsfleet to Strasbourg. On arrival transfer to the hotel on foot (approx. 200m) for check-in. This evening there will be a welcome drink, lecture “Art Nouveau /Jugendstil” and dinner with wine at the nearby Brasserie Dix.

Day 2: Morning walking tour of the German Quarter and Art Nouveau Houses near the Palais des Fetes. After Nancy and Paris, Strasbourg can be considered as the third most representative city of Art Nouveau in France and – as part of Germany at that time – combines the influence of German Jugendstil and Franco-Belgian Art Nouveau. This afternoon, visit the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, whose extensive collection includes Rodin’s “Thinker” and works by Monet and Gauguin amongst many others. Evening lecture at the hotel – “Art Nouveau Sex and Sensibility,” dinner tonight will be by own arrangement.

Day 3: Morning visit to the Musée Théodore Deck at Guebwiller, which houses the work of the eponymous master ceramicist. Afternoon visit to Colmar including the Musée Unterlinden, housed in a 13th century convent and whose Isenheim Altarpiece is world-renowned. Dinner this evening will be at the Art Nouveau Café Brasserie Flo (approx. 15 mins on foot).

Day 4: Full day tour to Karlsruhe, which flourished in the 19th century, including visits to the Museum on Marktplatz with its collection of applied arts from the early 20th century and the State Art Gallery which opened its doors in 1846 and houses a collection of some 800 paintings. This eveing is free and will be at your leisure.

Day 5: Morning visit to the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Decorative Arts, located in the splendour of Rohan Palace, before transferring to the station for return TGV and Eurostar to Paris and onwards to Ebbsfleet or St Pancras.

NB: Exact order of itinerary may vary according to local conditions and tour manager’s discretion.

Please note the maximum group size on this tour is 25 passengers.

More Info

PASSPORTS
Valid passport required by all, except: (a) EU nationals holding valid national identification cards; (b) Holders of national identification cards issued to nationals of Andorra, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino and Switzerland.

VISAS
Are not required by EU citizens. All other nationalities should enquire at the French consulate (PO Box 57, 6A Cromwell Place, London SW7 2EW Tel: (020) 7838 2000/1. Information Service: Tel: (0891) 887 733. Fax: (020) 7838 2046. Opening hours: 0900-1130 (and 1600-1630 for visa collection only) Monday to Friday (except French and British national holidays).

TRAIN
As with most trains, passengers are responsible for carrying baggage onto and off the train. Baggage can be stored on overhead shelves or at the entrance to the carriages. Trollies are available at St Pancras, but bags do need to be carried on to the platform. Porters are sometimes but not always available at St Pancras. The Eurostar and French trains are very long (18 carriages in the case of Eurostar and nearly 400 metres long) so there can be quite lengthy walks from the station entrance to your seat.  On all legs of the journey you have reserved seat and carriage numbers which are shown clearly on your ticket.

Travel Editions recommends a new luggage delivery service called 'Carry My Luggage', where your suitcase can be picked up from your home before departure and delivered straight to your hotel; therefore removing the worry about carrying your cases onto and off the trains. Please click here for more information and a 20% discount off the Carry My Luggage service exclusive to Travel Editions clients.

DOMESTIC RAIL TICKETS
Once you have received your Eurostar ticket from us (approx. 10 days in advance of travel) you can use this to purchase return domestic travel from your area. The prices are particularly competitive on Chiltern, South West, Southern and First Capital Connect services. These tickets are referred to as London International (CIV) tickets and you can either try to purchase them at your local station or call 01233 617913 Monday to Friday 9-5pm to speak to the Eurostar travel office. If you choose to phone you must leave at least 7 working days before your tour date, as the tickets are posted to you.

The greatest advantage of these CIV tickets, purchased in advance, is that they are covered by International Conditions of Carriage. So if your UK train is late, then Eurostar are obliged to put you on the next available train if you missed your original departure. The same applies on your return to London and the Eurostar is delayed, the the UK train operator is obliged to honour your UK ticket on the next available train. If you decide to purchase these from your local station the ticket staff are not always 100% familiar with these tickets so be prepared to be polite but firm!

Please note that you must travel using these CIV tickets within 24 hours of departure of your outbound or return Eurostar ticket and so you are not valid if you plan to extend your stay in London pre or post tour beyond this period.

HEALTH & INSURANCE – EHIC CARD
Please note that EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) only allows access to the same state-provided healthcare as a resident of the EU country they are temporarily visiting. It is NOT an alternative to travel insurance and will not provide the same level of cover as a travel insurance policy. The EHIC will not cover any private medical healthcare or the cost of things such as repatriation to the UK or lost or stolen property. It is also important to note that each country’s healthcare system is slightly different, so the EHIC might not cover everything that would be generally free on the NHS. On the EHIC application website, there is a section called Access to Healthcare Abroad which clarifies all the conditions and inclusions. We strongly recommend that you take out an appropriate travel insurance policy when you travel abroad.

A Secret War Tour beyond Outstanding! I have been on many, many battlefield tours over the years but this Secret War Tour with Travel Editions was truly outstanding. Well ahead of the rest and then some. I thought I knew what to expect but my expectations were greatly exceeded. Why? Because everything about it reeked of quality. We stayed in a superb hotel half board, had a comfortable coach with a superb driver, thank you, Oskar! And the tour guide was superb, warm, friendly and highly professional (am I allowed to mention your name, Yvonne?). The guest speakers were the very best available, bar none, and the locations visited left one with a feeling of awe and wonderment. They just could not have been better. So much was packed into the programme that it took me four days to recover! This was a Secret War Tour beyond expectations and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Thank you Travel Editions!

My mother has been a regular customer of Travel Editions. She's always rated this company and has encouraged her friends to also book with them. However, her trip to The Netherlands was cancelled because of Covid 19. I accept that this is not the fault of the company but the way they've dealt with my mother is appalling. They accept that she is due a full refund of the money she's paid and that it is their legal obligation to do so. However, the Managing Director, Ed Coventry has made it clear he intends to break the law and is refusing to refund my mother. Please note, this company is still taking bookings and deposits from new customers on their website and it seems to be the case that if the holiday cancels because of Covid 19, they refuse to return your deposit even though you should be refunded.

Breaking the law. I would like to echo the remarks made by other recent reviews, (see review "My mother has been a regular customer of Travel Editions") This company has broken the law, its contractual obligations, and its word, by refusing to make refunds for cancelled tours until March 2021. It is therefore not to be trusted. I am hoping that the recent ruling against TUI will make them change their minds but I doubt it.
