- Gorgeous river scenery
- Medieval villages that cling to the cliffsides
- Free time for personal culinary exploration
- Spectacular monasteries - Rocamadour is awe-inspiring
- Prehistory - cave paintings and dwellings
Probably the most beautiful river in France, the Dordogne winds majestically through a magnificent tableau of medieval hill villages, craggy hillsides, vineyards and towns full of character.
On this wonderful tour you will visit some of the highlights of this delightful region including Sarlat, Domme, Beynac, the replica Lascaux 4 prehistoric caves, due to open in December 2016, and the spectacular Rocamadour.
The tour is based at the Les Roches Hotel in Les Eyzies located in the heart of the Perigord Noir. This hotel provides an excellent base to explore the Dordogne and cuts down significantly (from previous years) on transfer times between sights visited.

Day 1: Travel by Eurostar from St Pancras or Ebbsfleet to Paris and onwards to Angoulême by TGV. On arrival, transfer by coach (approx. 2 hours) to Les Eyzies and Hotel des Roches. This evening there will be a welcome dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 2: Full day tour to Beynac, La Roque-Gageac and Domme – all members of “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France” association. Located on the banks of the Dordogne, Beynac‘s 14th century fortress towers over the village from its spectacular cliff top perch. Sitting at the foot of sheer cliffs right on the river, the light stone houses of La Roque-Gageac reflect peacefully on the water. The medieval fortified town of Domme sits on a rocky outcrop above the river offering fascinating history and glorious views.
Day 3: Full day tour to Périgueux, Bergerac and Monbazillac. The ancient city of Périgueux has Gallic and Roman roots - the excellent Vesunna Gallo-Roman Museum will tell you more, but today it is also a gastronomic city, where, on market day, you can pick up all sorts of delicious regional specialities. The compact city of Bergerac has a charming mix of Renaissance and medieval architecture and perfectly quaint streets to stroll. Nearby Chateau Monbazillac produces some of the region’s best wine – there’ll be a guided tour and wine-tasting during our visit.
Day 4: Full day to relax and explore Les Eyzies at your leisure. In 1868 several skeletons of Cro- Magnons (the first early modern humans) were unearthed in Les Eyzies. In fact, the town is at the centre of a whole series of archaeological sites allowing it to earn the name of ‘capital of Prehistory’. The National Museum of Prehistory is an interesting visit.
Day 5: Full day tour to Sarlat and Rocamadour. Sarlat-la-Canéda has an unmissable old town full of 15th and 16th century houses in an attractively uniform honey-coloured stone. The area, almost without equal in the whole of France, has been protected by law since 1962. Rocamadour has a fascinating history - after the discovery in 1166 of the undecayed body of St Amadour in an ancient cave made it an important centre of pilgrimage. The views thanks to its spectacular position above the Alzou Valley aren’t bad either!
Day 6: Full day tour to Les Eyzies, Lascaux 4 and Rouffignac. Today our visits will follow a theme – Prehistoric man. The base for the tour, Les Eyzies, is said to be the ‘capital of pre-history’ and hosts the National Museum of Prehistory. Lascaux 4 offers a superb replica of the cave halls of the Lascaux, where the Palaeolithic cave paintings are estimated to be 17,300 years old. Opening in late December 2016 this new experience will lead you through the facsimile wall paintings using new state of the art technology, objects, light and sound effects to recreate the areas past and allowing for a more authentic atmosphere. The Rouffignac cave contains 250 engravings and cave paintings from the Upper Palaeolithic era. This evening there will be a farewell dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 7: Transfer back to Angoulême station to catch the return TGV to Lille. At Lille, board the return Eurostar service to Ebbsfleet and St Pancras.
NB: Exact order of itinerary may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion.
Please note the maximum group size on this tour is 45 passengers.

Places of Interest
Beynac, La Roque-Gageac & Domme
Probably the most spectacular and memorable of the fortresses along the Dordogne, Beynac’s 14th Century fortress towers above a village that clings to a sheer cliff overlooking a beautiful stretch of the Dordogne. This lovely day exploring the Dordogne also takes us to the gorgeous riverside village of La Roque-Gageac and the beautiful medieval fortified town of Domme that offers a wonderful panorama of the Dordogne river.
Prehistoric Man - Les Eyzies, Lascaux II & Rouffignac
The Dordogne area boasts a wealth of sites occupied thousands of years ago by our distant ancestors. The most famous site of all are the paintings at Lascaux (now closed), which are now beautifully replicated at Lascaux 4, due to open in December 2016. Other highlights include the cave system at Rouffignac and our base, the town of Les Eyzies, which has a fascinating museum devoted to the subject.
Sarlat and Rocamadour
The beautiful town of Sarlat-la-Caneda boasts a wealth of medieval, Renaissance and 17th Century buildings almost without equal in the whole of France and has been protected by law since 1962. Highlights include the Cathedral St. Sacerdos, Chapelle des Penitents Bleus, and Bishop’s Palace, but the real attraction here is to wander the immaculate streets at leisure. One of the most important centres of pilgrimage after the discovery in 1166 of an ancient cave containing the undecayed body of St Amadour, the spectacular situation of Rocamadour on a rock above the Alzou Valley commanding wonderful views has ensured its continued popularity with tourists. Highlights of this iconic and impressive site include the picturesque pedestrianised town leading up to the compex of religious buildings including the Basilica of St-Sauveur, the Stations of the Cross, the Chapel of Notre-Dame (Miracles) and the tomb of St Amadour.
Bergerac, Monbazillac & Périgueux
The lively and attractive market town of Bergerac is a delightful place to explore with excellent shops, restaurants, and fascinating tobacco museum. Nearby is Chateau Monbazillac that produces some of the area’s best wine, including a famous dessert wine of the same name. The ancient and gastronomic city of Périgueux is well worth exploring, particularly on market day when the stalls in the lively medieval core offer regional specialities such as truffles, charcutierie and succulent pies called “patés de Périgord.” There is lots to see, too, including the Cathedral St Front, the cathedral quarter of medieval streets and the Musée de Périgord that houses a comprehensive collection of prehistoric artefacts.

Trollies are available at St Pancras and Lille, but bags do need to be carried on to the platform. Porters are sometimes but not always available at St Pancras. The Eurostar and French trains are very long (18 carriages in the case of Eurostar and nearly 400 metres long) so there can be quite lengthy walks from the station entrance to your seat. HEALTH & INSURANCE – EHIC CARD
Please note that EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) only allows access to the same state-provided healthcare as a resident of the EU country they are temporarily visiting. It is NOT an alternative to travel insurance and will not provide the same level of cover as a travel insurance policy. The EHIC will not cover any private medical healthcare or the cost of things such as repatriation to the UK or lost or stolen property. It is also important to note that each country’s healthcare system is slightly different, so the EHIC might not cover everything that would be generally free on the NHS. On the EHIC application website, there is a section called Access to Healthcare Abroad which clarifies all the conditions and inclusions. We strongly recommend that you take out an appropriate travel insurance policy when you travel abroad.
