Tour Overview

The most easterly of the Balearic Islands, Menorca is made up of two very different geological areas. Tramontana in the north and Migjorn in the south are separated by a fracture line that runs from the harbour town of Mahón. The Northern region is ancient; its rocks are fractured and folded, and are made up of mainly palaeozoic conglomerates, sandstones and clays. The South side is much newer, dating from the Miocene period, and is made up of mainly limestone. It forms an almost horizontal platform carved out with numerous gullies (Barrancos) which outflow into beautiful coves.

Menorca is rich in wild flowers with over 1400 species of plants recorded. On the island the orchid family is represented by around 30 species, most of which flower in late March to early May. 25 different species of butterfly have also been recorded. In the spring many bird species can also be seen as the island lies on their migration route with a good number of passage migrants resting on the island as they travel enroute to more temperate climes. The Menorcan habitat is unique, hardly surprising then that the birdlife here is unique and abundant. Winters here are wet – so shallow wetlands dot the island – perfect habitats for wading birds and birds of prey.

The island is circumvented by the Cami des Cavalls, (‘The Horse Road’), first built for defensive purposes by the British, but recently renovated and marked so one can walk, ride or bike the perimeter of the whole island in 20 stages.

Our tour is designed with the focus on the wonderful spring nature of the island but, at the same time, offers some insight into the historical highlights too.

Our Guide - Javier Méndez
Your guide for this tour is a professional ornithologist and naturalist. Javier is a co-founder of Menorca Ornithologist Society and a member of Menorca Research Institute. Javier speaks good English and has a natural and infectious enthusiasm for birds and the unique wildlife of Menorca. He has been guiding groups of birdwatchers, walkers and nature enthusiasts on the island since 2001. Javier also has an excellent knowledge of the Menorcan wild flowers having also led many botanical tours.

Itinerary

Day 1: Fly from London Gatwick to Mahón (regional flights may be available. These are on request and subject to a supplement.) On arrival transfer to the Port Mahón Hotel. Welcome drink followed by dinner.

Day 2: We begin our tour with a short drive to the Es Grau Albufera, a large fresh water lagoon situated just behind the beach, where we will make use of several hides to watch the abundant water birds such as Purple Heron, Pochards and Great Crested Grebes. We will also botanise along the south-western fringe of the lagoon. Later we will visit the visitor
centre, named after the renowned Menorcan botanist and early 20th-century scholar Joan Joaquim Rodríguez i Femenias, who compiled the first comprehensive catalogue of
Menorca’s flora. We will watch a short audio visual presentation about the Natural Park and the flora and fauna of Menorca. After a break for lunch in Mahon, we drive to the spectacular north-east coast lighthouse of Favaritx and walk in this very specialised xerophytic habitat. Birds are usually in abundance here, especially Shearwaters.

Day 3: Today our visits focus on the south-west of the island at Son Saura. We will botanise along the Cami de Cavalls, the 'Horse Road' built for defensive purposes by the
French and now a footpath circumnavigating the whole Island. We hope to see some special endemic plants and listen to Nightingales in the trees and watch a colony of
Spotless Starlings. We will take our lunch break in the small town of Ferreries renown for shoe making. In the afternoon we will explore the spectacular Barranco (ravine) de
Algendar (Pas d’en Revull) where we will botanise and watch for the many interesting birds that inhabit this gorge, in particular the Egyptian Vulture.

Day 4: Today we explore further along the north coast starting our tour near El Pilar beach. We will walk along a delightful path through pine woods and sand dunes botanising as we go for endemic plants and at the same time listening out for nightingales and hoping that the Bee-eaters have returned to their nesting site. Our lunch break will be in
the town of Cuitadella where there will be time to explore and perhaps visit its newly renovated Cathedral, attractive shopping arcades and narrow port. Leaving Cuitadella
behind, we will visit the Naveta des Tudons a megalithic boat shaped tomb with further opportunities for botanising.

Day 5: Today is a free day offering the opportunity to explore further or simply to relax. It may be possible to join a glass bottom boat trip to the mouth of the harbour. The town of Mahon also offers many possibilities such as the Museum of Menorca, and the Santa Maria Church where the organ donated by Admiral Collingwood which is still played every morning for visitors.

Day 6: Our destination today is Son Bou located on the south coast. Son Bou has the longest sandy beach in Menorca backed by a large marshy area and remains of rice
paddies. We will take a walk along the Cami des Cavalls to Santo Tomas skirting the marshes and wetlands to botanise, and watch birds and other wildlife that inhabit this very
interesting area. We may see Squaco Herons, egrets, and many ducks Our lunch break will be in the village of Es Migjorn. In the afternoon we will visit Torralba d' en Salord, one
of the larger Talayotic villages on the island.

Day 7: Our final day takes us back to the north coast, in fact, to the most northerly point of Menorca, the Cap de Cavalleria. On our way we will stop at the Lluriac Marshes to observe the birds on the wetlands. On arrival at the headland we will walk around the headland, botanising as we go. The plants reflect the xerophytic conditions of the very exposed North Coast. On the return we will stop to see a Roman villa and the small port of Sanitja. We will also visit the lovely Port of Fornells with its Martello Tower built during the British occupation of the Island in the 18th century. If the weather is suitable today we shall take the opportunity to enjoy a picnic at La Conceptió salt pans, a lovely tranquil place at the head of Fornells bay where our guide, Javier, will prepare a typical Menorcan picnic with local produce. After lunch there will be time to explore the plants and birds of the Salt pans before driving to the highest point of the island to visit the Monte Toro monastery and enjoy spectacular views of the whole island. From here it should be possible to see many of the places visited during the tour.

Day 8: Transfer to Mahón Airport for the return flight to London Gatwick.

NB: Exact order of excursions may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion.

Please note the maximum group size on this tour is 20 passengers.

Please note: The itinerary will include some walking, occasionally rough, of up to 3 to 4 hours each day in sometimes 'wild' and rough countryside in order to fully experience a representative range of plants, so reasonable fitness and decent footwear are essential. Please note nothing too strenuous will be undertaken however, walking shoes with ankle support and sturdy soles are highly recommended and ski-sticks/walking poles can also be very useful in some terrains.

What to bring:
We suggest binoculars or monocular scopes, cameras, walking poles ,sun hats and walking attire suitable for rough and thorny terrain. The weather may vary from cool and wet to hot and sunny so be prepared for both.

Accommodation

Port Mahón Hotel
The Port Mahón Hotel occupies a magnificent position overlooking the Port of Mahón. We have chosen this hotel for its close proximity to the town and the many restaurants along the water’s edge reached either by a few ‘Spanish Steps’ or the convenience of a public lift. The hotel is a classic Anglo-Menorcan building painted in the traditional dark red Menorcan style of all important buildings on the island, and offers a buffet and à la carte restaurant, piano bar, cafe, pool, and a splendid terrace-sun deck with exclusive views over the Port. Rooms include en-suite bathrooms, telephone, air-conditioning, TV, mini bar, rental safety deposit box, Wi-Fi and hairdryer. It is possible to upgrade your room to include a balcony or a balcony and sea view - prices on request.

Port Mahón Hotel Website

Mahón
The base for this tour is Mahón (known as Mao in Catalan). A picturesque and historical city, Mahón became the capital of the island in 1721 when the British moved the capital from Cuitadella to Mahón. This was done predominantly because of the size and depth of the town’s natural harbour, which meant the entire British Mediterranean fleet could be housed here. Today the town remains an attractive place with lots of elegant 18th-century mansions dotted between the many churches and the town’s Gothic cathedral. It is a place best explored on foot especially the narrow and atmospheric pedestrianised streets with their shady squares and choice of outdoor cafes and restaurants.

HEALTH & INSURANCE – EHIC CARD
Please note that EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) only allows access to the same state-provided healthcare as a resident of the EU country they are temporarily visiting. It is NOT an alternative to travel insurance and will not provide the same level of cover as a travel insurance policy. The EHIC will not cover any private medical healthcare or the cost of things such as repatriation to the UK or lost or stolen property. It is also important to note that each country’s healthcare system is slightly different, so the EHIC might not cover everything that would be generally free on the NHS. On the EHIC application website, there is a section called Access to Healthcare Abroad which clarifies all the conditions and inclusions.

A Secret War Tour beyond Outstanding! I have been on many, many battlefield tours over the years but this Secret War Tour with Travel Editions was truly outstanding. Well ahead of the rest and then some. I thought I knew what to expect but my expectations were greatly exceeded. Why? Because everything about it reeked of quality. We stayed in a superb hotel half board, had a comfortable coach with a superb driver, thank you, Oskar! And the tour guide was superb, warm, friendly and highly professional (am I allowed to mention your name, Yvonne?). The guest speakers were the very best available, bar none, and the locations visited left one with a feeling of awe and wonderment. They just could not have been better. So much was packed into the programme that it took me four days to recover! This was a Secret War Tour beyond expectations and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Thank you Travel Editions!

My mother has been a regular customer of Travel Editions. She's always rated this company and has encouraged her friends to also book with them. However, her trip to The Netherlands was cancelled because of Covid 19. I accept that this is not the fault of the company but the way they've dealt with my mother is appalling. They accept that she is due a full refund of the money she's paid and that it is their legal obligation to do so. However, the Managing Director, Ed Coventry has made it clear he intends to break the law and is refusing to refund my mother. Please note, this company is still taking bookings and deposits from new customers on their website and it seems to be the case that if the holiday cancels because of Covid 19, they refuse to return your deposit even though you should be refunded.

Breaking the law. I would like to echo the remarks made by other recent reviews, (see review "My mother has been a regular customer of Travel Editions") This company has broken the law, its contractual obligations, and its word, by refusing to make refunds for cancelled tours until March 2021. It is therefore not to be trusted. I am hoping that the recent ruling against TUI will make them change their minds but I doubt it.
