Itinerary

Your Lecturer

Jeremy Paterson
Jeremy taught Greek and Roman history for over forty years at Newcastle University. He has travelled widely in Greece and the Mediterranean. His enthusiasm for the ancient world was first inspired by reading Homer and then by his fascination with the archaeological discoveries at Mycenae and Knossos. He is much in demand as a speaker at home and in many of the classical countries of the Mediterranean, where he has accompanied many groups to sites and museums.

Day 1: Fly from London Heathrow to Athens. Transfer to Delphi (approx. 2 hours) for a two night stay at the Amalia Hotel, Delphi. Dinner and a brief introductory talk.

Day 2: Our visits begin at the breath-taking ruins of Delphi, hidden in the folds of Mount Parnassus, the site of the most revered oracle in the Greek world. On the same day we experience the peace of Hosios Loukas, one of the finest Byzantine monasteries in Greece. This evening there will be a short talk by Jeremy Peterson, 'Consulting the Oracle'.

Day 3: Journey to Olympia. Leaving Delphi behind, we have a spectacular drive along the Gulf of Corinth. We see one of Greece's most recent marvels, the Rio-Antirio Bridge, the world's second longest cable-stayed bridge, which crosses the Gulf. En-route to Olympia we visit the 13th century Frankish castle of Chlemoutsi.  If we have time, we may also divert to the rarely visited site of the Greek city of Elis. Check-in to the Europa Hotel Olympia for a two night stay. Evening talk: ‘The ancient Olympic Games’.

Day 4: We spend today at Olympia, the site of the ancient Olympics, set in the beautiful valley of the Alpheios River. We will visit the outstanding museum and wander in one of the most atmospheric of ancient places. Overnight at the Europa Hotel.

Day 5: Today we journey south through some of the most spectacular scenery in Greece to visit the remote and lonely Temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae. We then continue on to Sparta and check-in to the Hotel Menelaion for a one night stay. Evening talk: ‘Sparta and Mystras’.

Day 6: We spend today at Mystras, the deserted Byzantine city which was ‘the wonder of the Morea’. Built below its Frankish castle, the site runs steeply down the side of the valley with influences from the Franks, the Byzantines and the Ottomans. Deserted now, its palace, churches, and monasteries, which have some of the finest surviving wall paintings, look out over the rich valley of what the Greeks called ‘Hollow Lacedaimon’. If we have time, we will visit briefly what little remains of Classical Sparta, before driving north to the Amalia Hotel situated close to Nafplio, where we will be based for the rest of our stay.

Day 7: We start the day with a short lecture by Jeremy 'A short history of Greece’ followed by a leisurely morning spent in the historic town of Nafplio, one of the most charming of Greek towns, yet one that testifies to the remarkable history of modern Greece. The afternoon will be free for you to enjoy the town at leisure.

Day 8: Roman Corinth and Acrocorinth. Roman Corinth is a sprawling site with an excellent small museum. Above it sits Acrocorinth, a towering acropolis that looms over the vast coastal plain below. Whilst here, we take the opportunity to visit the Corinth Canal, first dreamed of by the Greeks in the seventh century BC, but not completed until 1893. Evening talk by Jeremy: ‘I have gazed on the face of Agamemnon’.

Day 9: Tiryns and Mycenae. The archaeological sites of Mycenae and Tiryns are the most imposing ruins of the two greatest cities of the Mycenaean civilization, which dominated the eastern Mediterranean world from the 15th to the 12th century BC and played a vital role in the development of classical Greek culture. Both sites have excellent examples of cyclopean walls and Mycenae has one of the most impressive tholos ‘Beehive’ tombs found.

Day 10: Transfer to Athens airport for return flight to London Heathrow.

NB: Exact order of excursions may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion

Please note this tour involves some walking and standing, particularly at the archaeological sites, which can be uneven underfoot.

Please note the maximum group size on this tour is 25 passengers.

Places of Interest

Nafplion
The Palamídhi, Náfplio’s principal fort, Boúrtzi, the third fort occupying the Ayíou Theodórou islet offshore from the harbour, and the church of Áyios Spyrídon, where the first prime minister, Ioánnis Kapodhístrias was assassinated, are of special interest. Platía Syndágmatos (Constitution Square), the main square of the old town, is the focus of most interest. Then there is the Archaeological Museum that occupies a Venetian mansion.

Tiryns (Tírynthos)
The undeniably impressive fortress is over three thousand years old, and the site itself has been occupied for four thousand years before that. The walls, formed of huge Cyclopean stones, supposedly built by the Cyclopes for the legendary king Proteus, (the expression ‘Cyclopean masonry’ is derived from here), dominate the site.  The German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann uncovered Tíryns in 1884.

Árgos
The oldest inhabited town in Greece (c.5000 years) is an option for your free day. The theatre is said to have held 20,000 spectators.  Alongside are the remains of an odeion and Roman baths.  Above the site looms the ancient acropolis, on the conical hill of Lárissa capped by the Frankish medieval castle. In nearby Kefalári is the convent of Zoödhóhou Piyís hewn from rock.

Mycenae
The region is one of the longest occupied in Greece, with evidence of Neolithic settlements from 3000 BC.  But it is during the period from 1550 to 1200 BC that the citadel of Mycenae and its legend belong.  The Lion Gate, the Treasury of Atreus or (as officially called) Tomb of Agamemnon, with its startling tholos are some of its impressive features.  The archaeological remains unearthed by Schliemann were impelled by his belief that there was a factual basis to Homer’s epics.

Corinth
Corinth was one of the most powerful city states of ancient Greece. It gained its power from its excellent location, which gave it the ability to transport goods across the isthmus. Corinth was destroyed by the Romans in 146 BC but re-built a century later becoming the largest and most important Roman town in Greece with a population of 750,000.

Nemea
The Nemean Games became a sporting event to rank alongside the other three major Pan-Hellenic athletic games held at Olympia, Isthmia and Delphi. Theywere the youngest of the four but were held in as equally high regard as the games at Olympia and ensured any ‘Victor’ free meals for life. Nemea is also well known within Greek mythology for the slaying of the Nemean Lion by Hercules.

Epidaurus
Visited for its grandiose ancient theatre with a seating capacity of 13,000, built around 330-320 BC. Its extraordinary acoustics have contributed to holding the annual Athens Festival productions of Classical drama and other productions.

FLIGHTS

Please note that all flight times are provisional and subject to airline schedules and changes.

HEALTH & INSURANCE – EHIC CARD
Please note that EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) only allows access to the same state-provided healthcare as a resident of the EU country they are temporarily visiting. It is NOT an alternative to travel insurance and will not provide the same level of cover as a travel insurance policy. The EHIC will not cover any private medical healthcare or the cost of things such as repatriation to the UK or lost or stolen property. It is also important to note that each country’s healthcare system is slightly different, so the EHIC might not cover everything that would be generally free on the NHS. On the EHIC application website, there is a section called Access to Healthcare Abroad which clarifies all the conditions and inclusions.

A Secret War Tour beyond Outstanding! I have been on many, many battlefield tours over the years but this Secret War Tour with Travel Editions was truly outstanding. Well ahead of the rest and then some. I thought I knew what to expect but my expectations were greatly exceeded. Why? Because everything about it reeked of quality. We stayed in a superb hotel half board, had a comfortable coach with a superb driver, thank you, Oskar! And the tour guide was superb, warm, friendly and highly professional (am I allowed to mention your name, Yvonne?). The guest speakers were the very best available, bar none, and the locations visited left one with a feeling of awe and wonderment. They just could not have been better. So much was packed into the programme that it took me four days to recover! This was a Secret War Tour beyond expectations and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Thank you Travel Editions!

My mother has been a regular customer of Travel Editions. She's always rated this company and has encouraged her friends to also book with them. However, her trip to The Netherlands was cancelled because of Covid 19. I accept that this is not the fault of the company but the way they've dealt with my mother is appalling. They accept that she is due a full refund of the money she's paid and that it is their legal obligation to do so. However, the Managing Director, Ed Coventry has made it clear he intends to break the law and is refusing to refund my mother. Please note, this company is still taking bookings and deposits from new customers on their website and it seems to be the case that if the holiday cancels because of Covid 19, they refuse to return your deposit even though you should be refunded.

Breaking the law. I would like to echo the remarks made by other recent reviews, (see review "My mother has been a regular customer of Travel Editions") This company has broken the law, its contractual obligations, and its word, by refusing to make refunds for cancelled tours until March 2021. It is therefore not to be trusted. I am hoping that the recent ruling against TUI will make them change their minds but I doubt it.
