Day 1 : First Impression

Location: Bilbao

After meeting our local Travelmeister in your accommodations in the center of Bilbao, you will get a short introduction to the trip and our upcoming week. We'll start with a short walk through the city to the funicular. It will bring us to the top of mount Artxanda, where we will enjoy a stunning view of the city Bilbao, having a welcome drink paired with a pintxo - a traditional basque snack.

Day 2 : Precious Bilbao

Location: Bilbao

On our first morning, we’ll dive straight into the old town of Bilbao to discover and feel the history and traditions of the city and their lovely people.

Then you’ll get introduced in the culture of pintxos! This tasty delights are the lifeblood of the basque food scene. Together we will try different pintxos in some of the best pintxo bars of the city, learning about the ingredients and preparation methods.

Afterwards we will continue strolling along the river, getting in touch with the New Bilbao and its change, ending up at the world famous Guggenheim Museum.

Optional: Take the Guggenheim Museum Tour, to enter the Museum, marvel at its art pieces and learn more about the change this building brought to the city. (Let your local guide know that you want to do the tour at the beginning of the trip)

Day 3 : Hidden Treasure

Location: Bilbao, Gaztelugatxeko Doniene, Elantxobe

The sea looms large in the basque landscape and history. After breakfast we’ll start our journey to explore the basque coastline. You’ll discover San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and the Urdaibai biosphere reserve, soak up the flavour of the fishing port of Bermeo and learn more about basque history in Gernika.

On the way we will taste the traditional cuisine for lunch...where you can try some freshly-caught fish for example ;-)

After lunch we'll hike to Monte Atxarre to enjoy some of the best views of the Basque Country and if the weather allows it, we’ll stroll along the beach, and swim in the sea :D

Day 4 : La Concha

Location: Bilbao, Getaria, Donostia-San Sebastian

Today is at your leisure. Enjoy some free time to relax, explore on your own, or make plans with your new friends. Anyway, if you don't need spare time and want more, you can book our optional experience: Ever heard about “Txakoli”, the typical basque white wine? In Getaria, a walled medieval fishermen village, sitting on a hillside we will enjoy a Txakoli wine tasting paired with the best possible view of this place.

At midday we continue to San Sebastian, the most renowned city of the Basque Country, famed for its beauty and fine food. Stroll along the La Concha beach, enjoy some delicious pintxos and feel as if you’re revisiting the Belle Époque when you walk along its bridges, squares and buildings.

Day 5 : Traditional Taste

Location: Bilbao, Playa De Gorliz

Today it's time for our civil war bunker adventure that will immerse you in the history of Spanish Civil War. We’ll hike to some of the bunkers and tunnels of Bilbao’s Iron Ring, a labyrinthine fortification network around the city of Bilbao, which was constructed hurriedly by the Basque Government during the Spanish Civil War to defend from the Nationalist forces... On the way you'll be able to marvel at some impressive views of cliffs, hidden beaches, and the sea.

Optional: After the workout we deserve a reward. Enjoy the optional traditional and delicious seafood lunch with a beautiful view of the sea. If you don't like seafood or fish, there are some meaty options available as well, but for vegans or vegetarians, the options are sadly really limited. (Let the guide know you want to participate at the beginning of the trip, so he can make the reservation for all of you. Lunch is not included in the price of the trip)

Day 6 : Wine And Architecture

Location: Bilbao, Rioja Alavesa, Vitoria-Gasteiz

Today again the choice is yours. Exhausted from all our adventures and need some relax time? Yes? Then feel free to use the day for whatever you want. Not at all? Then book our optional experience and leave the zone of Bilbao to dive into the wine area “Rioja Alavesa”. A region with its own character, original and different with a precious balance between tradition and modernity. A whole heritage dotted with prehistoric remains, medieval villages and unique landscapes, mixed with the impressive modern architecture of some of the wineries. We'll visit one of the wineries to immerse ourselves into real basque traditions, taste red wine, and eat basque food.

In the afternoon we’ll visit the capital of the Basque Country, Vitoria-Gasteiz, a friendly, very green city, rich in natural areas and with one of the finest old quarters in the Basque Country, called the Medieval Almond, because of its shape.

Day 7 : Surf's Up

Location: Bilbao

Accommodation: Hostel

Do you have some special plans, want to explore a bit on your own, visit some museums, go shopping or just relax at the beach?

Today you decide! Maybe a beach day? Book a private surf lesson or just stroll along the beach with your new friends, play some beach tennis, swim in the sea or make a SUP tour. Don’t feel like beach? Feel free to use the day for whatever you have in mind.

In the evening, we’ll enjoy one last dinner together, before discovering the nightlife of the city.

Day 8 : Farewell

Location: Bilbao

Meals Included: Breakfast

Enjoy one last breakfast together as a group.

The rest of the day is yours to spend on your own or with your new friends.

  • Will passengers from another country be participating in the tour?

    Most likely yes. This tour can be booked by every English-speaking adult and usually, there is a mix of represented countries on every tour.

  • Is there a limit to luggage that can be brought on the tour?

    As soon you have enough space to store it in your room, there is no limit, but have in mind that if you are sharing the room, the others may need some space as well ;-)

  • Is free Wi-Fi available in the accommodation used?

    Yes, free Wi-fi is available in the hostel.

  • Is there a supplement for solo travellers?

    No, only if you want a private room just for you, there is an extra cost. If you come alone and are okay with sharing the room with other participants from your trip, there is no extra cost for you.

  • Arrival and Departure Time

    We recommend being at the meet-up point (Poshtel Bilbao, Bilbao, Spain) around 5-6 pm local time, to make sure you arrive in time for the Welcome Drinks and Snacks, where you will meet your group for the first time. On the last day of the tour, we normally don't plan activities, so you are free to leave whenever you want. You will get a detailed itinerary one week before the trip starts.

  • Can you assist with pre or post tour accommodation?

    Definitely! Don't hesitate to contact us if you need pre- or post-tour accommodation. If possible we can try to find accommodation in the same hotel as our tour or close to it, to make it as hassle-free as possible for you.

  • Are flights included in this tour?

    No. Please remember to book your flights to Berlin separately.

  • Do you require a visa for this holiday?

    If you live legally in an EU-country part of the Schengen Area, you don't need a special Visa for travelling to Germany. If you don't live within the Schengen Area, you may need a Visa, so before booking, please ensure you check what documents are required to enter the country you are visiting. Remember that Visas can take up to six weeks & a fee is normally charged.

  • Are children permitted to take part in the tour?

    No, our tours are for adults only.

  • Will I know the names and details of all the accommodation before I depart?

    Yes, we'll send you all the details one week before departure.

  • Are the local guides on the tour English speaking?

  • What is the standard of the hotels on this tour?

    Poshtel Bilbao is a premium hostel. If you have a private double room or a private single room, and there is no availability at Poshtel Bilbao you will stay at the Amari Hotel that is 3 minutes walking distance from Poshtel Bilbao. The Amari Hotel is a 2-star hotel.

  • What is the maximum group size?

    The maximum group size for this trip is 12.

  • Are vaccinations required for this tour?

    Depending on where you’re travelling and your nationality, you'll need a valid passport and may also need visas or vaccinations to enter certain countries.     Travel insurance and visas are not included in the cost of your trip and should be booked separately.

    All entrance fees for our activities are included.

  • What is the fitness level required to do this tour?

    The fitness level required to do this tour is medium. We do some easy walking tours in the cities, but also a bit of easy hiking that requires a minimum fitness level. Nothing too crazy, and you can skip the hike and stay at the beach as well ;-)

  • Is there any free time to explore places during the tour?

    On our tours we try to find the perfect balance between guided activities and free time, so you will have enough free time to explore your destination on your own.

  • What currencies are required for this tour?

    Euro.

  • What is the tipping policy?

    The guides are paid by us, so you don't need to tip them. Tips in Spain are not included but are also not necessarily expected. Just tip if you want and liked the service :)

  • What happens if a group doesn’t make its minimum required number of passengers?

    If the minimum number of 8 participants is not reached, Travelmeister reserves the right to cancel the trip, if considered that it will affect negatively the quality of the journey itself, and the participants must be notified the latest 14 days before the start of the trip. The amount you paid will be refunded completely.

  • Will the accommodation included meet local health and safety regulations?

    Of course! For every trip, we carefully select the best possible accommodations.

  • What Ethical Travel credentials does the tour company have?

  • How long has the tour company been trading?

    Travelmeister officially started in 2019, but we were hosting people already long before this and then converted our passion into our job. Our local guides have all long-year experience hosting guests from all over the world.

  • Do you operate a “single share” option and how does it work?

    On all of our trips, the standard price is the shared room option, where you only share the room with people from your trip. You can upgrade to a private room for yourself or to a private room for you and your friends if you are not travelling solo.

  • Am I contributing to any charity by booking the tour?

    No.

  • What happens if I need to change my holiday date once I’ve booked?

    If it is more than 60 days before departure you can just change the date up to 2 times. If it is less than 60 days before departure, please contact us. In most of cases you can transfer your deposit to any other date or trip, without any extra cost, but we need to check it first.

  • What documents will I receive before I travel?

    After booking, you will get the Secured Payment Certificate, which ensures that your money is safe, and the booking confirmation. One week before departure, we will send you all necessary details for your trip, such as an exact itinerary with meeting points and times, the address of your accommodations, and helpful information about your destination.

  • Can I join the tour once it has departed?

    As our tours are one centre based, if you can not make it the first day, you could join at the next day as well, but we don't recommend it. The first day is for getting to know each other better and receiving some info about the trip ahead, so we highly recommend being there.
