Tour Overview
The Ultimate Palawan Paddle by Tribal Adventures is a sea kayak expedition like no other. It is both a private and exclusive trip like the vast bulk of our expeditions, and a scheduled group trip running quarterly Eleven days in length winding through an archipelago referred to as the “last frontier” by the late Jacques Cousteau, and using a large support boat—a motorized outrigger banca authorized to ply the waters between Coron and El Nido in far northern Palawan—guests can opt in and out of kayaking and snorkeling at whim. (And for a single person or a couple, there is the option for using a motorised sailing catamaran as a support boat AND an accommodation option at no extra charge Tribal Adventures invites sea lovers of all stripes, and with one paddle stroke at a time, to discover why an archipelago of around 200 islands, many of which we paddle between, and the most delightful of which we drop paddle on to beachcomb, snorkel off, or camp on, got the “last frontier” label. No experience? No matter, if you have moderate fitness and stamina. This trip comes with a kayak guide per five participants and a large support boat accompanying kayakers. And we all have 11 days in mind-blowing surroundings to perfect our paddling using Wilderness Systems North Star double sea kayaks and Tsunami single 175 & 165 sea kayaks, among others. The expedition also has a sports therapist, who sets up shop in a tent at each night’s beach camp. She irons out the wrinkles of a day’s paddling, making bodies supple and prepped for another awesome day on the water. It’s a service that comes without extra charge, though a tip to the therapist at the end of your trip will be appreciated.
Highlights
Itinerary
Day 1 : Ultimate Palawan Paddle
Location: Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon, Siete Pecados
Accommodation: Camp
Meals Included: Lunch, Dinner, Morning snack (merienda), Afternoon snack (merienda), Sundowner cocktail with nibbles
Pick up from Coron hotel for 10 minute drive to Coron recreational boat port, boarding expedition boat at Lualhati Park, unless otherwise advised.
Walk around town, visit market with guide, purchase personal extras like fins to supplement snorkel and mask provided by Tribal Adventures.
Pre-departure safety briefing upon boarding expedition boat as Coast Guard clears expedition boat for departure.
Orientation from lead guide after consultation with boat captain: the wind will determine where the kayak expedition proper starts.
Morning merienda aboard expedition boat, taken en route to beach for kayak fit-out and paddle commencement.
Kayak to Twin Lagoon, Kayangan Lake, a "secret" lagoon, cave and a snorkelling spot, possibly Siete Pecados.
Note, we will give a wide berth to over-burdened tourist sites, sending a message of disapproval of over-tourism.
Depart touristy Northwest Coron -- by boat or kayak.
With wind at participants' backs, paddle of Coron's coastline with its myriad lagoons starts in earnest, paddle strokes leaving tourists in their wake.
Around an hour before sunset paddlers arrive at a Coron beach that will become a tented camp for the night.
Sundowners followed by dinner on the beach and under the stars
Day 2 : Ultimate Palawan Paddle
Location: Coron Island, Cabugao, Ditaytayan Island
Accommodation: Camp
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Morning merienda, Afternoon merienda, Sundowners
Paddle out of camp after a hearty breakfast, the tents dismantled by the camp manager.
Paddle to meet a Tagbanua family, paying respect to such custodians of Coron Island and its surrounding waters.
Conditions and tide permitting we'll mimic the seafaring Tagbanua by paddling their esteemed "time-tunnel" undercut cliffs.
These undercuts go for 15 kilometres and end at a secret lagoon with its own language.
Tagbanua elders have threatened to punish wayward paddlers if they're noisy: If you don't know the language, it's best to stay silent!
During the journey your guide will discuss aspects of Tagbanua tradition and the consequences if insufficient respect is paid the Giant Octopus!
Time truly gets away from paddlers, submersed within the cave-like undercuts, where you can lose all sense of time.
It's become a tradition to take out the string hammock from your kayak hatch and string it between two coconuts or under an undercut and fall blissfully asleep.
Until your cook comes and wakes you for a scrumptious lunch!
The paddle then resumes and by kayak or support boat participants land on an idyllic beach, settling in to another awesome beach camp.
Morning and afternoon merienda, lunch, sundowners, dinner
Day 3 : Ultimate Palawan Paddle
Location: Malcapuya Island, Culion, Pass Island
Accommodation: Camp
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Morning merienda, Afternoon merienda, Sundowners
After morning coffee, participants circle Ditaytayan, returning to a dismantled camp and breakfast aboard the expedition boat.
Board kayaks and cruise to Malcapuya Island and snorkel over giant clams.
Kayak to the town of Culion through a mangrove channel shortcut. Walk the picturesque town, which is steeped in Spanish and American colonial history.
Will check out the church built atop a fort with a canon: The church is constructed from coral.
During the walk with a guide the boat will be resupplied: Tribal Adventures efforts to source provisions as locally as possible -- thereby spreading the benefit of our presence.
Culion was once the largest leper colony in the world: The residents know a thing or two about pandemics and isolation from their ancestors.
Many Culion residents are descendants of stolen generations whereby children of an infected mother were taken and adopted out.
This despite the father being free of leprosy!
After lunch, it's a cruise to Lusong coral garden and wreck for superlative snorkeling.
From there we paddle to Pass Island and our camp, which is a tad more "civilised", with power at night and plentiful water. Time to charge cameras.
It's sundowners with a sit-down dinner, prepared by Tribal Adventures' expedition cook.
Anyone for a massage? On an expedition with a full complement of 10 participants and two guides there will usually be the opportunity for four massages each evening: that means each participant and guide can expect three massages of 30-45 minutes each during their 11-day expedition.
Day 4 : Ultimate Palawan Paddle
Location: Pagtenga Island, BLACK ISLAND CAVE BUSUANGA
Accommodation: Camp
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Morning merienda, Afternoon merienda, Sundowner
Paddle the jewels in the crown of the Western Calamian after breakfast and breaking camp.
Plenty of paddle stops at perfect coral-ringed, palm-fringed sandy islands en route to our camp site at Dibitunay.
Probably have merienda at North Cay and a snorkel at Pamilican, with lunch at Dibitunay.
After a post-lunch siesta, we're off in the expedition banca to Black Island to explore its environs, including a cave.
Time and conditions permitting participants will paddle back to camp, making a stop en route to a busy fishing village.
Watch out you don't get roped in to a karaoke! And a warning: Avoid singing "I did it my way". More about that from your guide on the trip.
Dinner will be under the stars on Dibitunay, just a 10-minute paddle across a narrow strait.
Day 5 : Ultimate Palawan Paddle
Location: West Nalaut Island, Galoc Island
Accommodation: Camp
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Morning merienda, Afternoon merienda, Sundowners
More paradise islands of the Western Calamian await as participants depart by kayak after breakfast from Dibitunay, wind cooperating.
Each participant is provided 2 dry bags, one for sheets, towels etc supplied by Tribal Adventures and another for overnight needs such as clothes for the night and paddling gear for the next day. It's recommended participants bring another small dry bag for their devices: that makes three dry bags--two medium from us and one small from you.
The dry bags are placed by the tent or paddled back by participants to the expedition boat ahead of paddling out from camp each morning.
(Large backpacks, suitcases of participants remain on board the expedition boat, accessible when needed).
On this morning, participants paddle back towards Pamilican, skirting the island and heading to West Nalaut should current and wind cooperate.
If not, other pearls of the Calamian await before the expedition boat catches up.
Participants board the boat, taking lunch en route to Coral Bay. Alighting, participants get back in their kayaks doing a half circle of Galoc Island, settling on a windswept beach.
Camping on this stunning, windswept beach, can be problematic: a sudden squall lifted a tent off the ground and 20 metres up a hillside: the two guys inside had glimpses of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. So, the location is subject to change: it's a captain's call!
Dinner under bright stars.
Day 6 : Ultimate Palawan Paddle
Location: Linapacan Tourists Camp
Accommodation: Camp
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Morning merienda, Afternoon merienda, Sundowners
Up at dawn to break camp for early departure for Linapacan
Cruise coast of Culion before crossing strait: Nearest island is 14 kilometres away.
Upon reaching the archipelago, stops will depend upon wind, current and time to destination.
Breakfast, morning merienda and lunch on board.
Arrive early to mid afternoon at Linapacan Tourists Camp, camp manager set up tents.
There's a sublime afternoon paddle around a nearby lagoon, almost circular. And across is an island with heaps of monkeys.
I recall a sailor's dog jumped off the boat as it heard the monkeys' squeal: She swam to shore, it was two hours before she was coaxed back on board.
(Should accommodation be available, and mind you the grass huts are nothing fancy, participants are welcome to opt for a cottage at their cost).
Intend to be at the camp for two nights, doing a day trip out to Guinto island and back a circuitous route)
Meals are arranged by Tribal Adventures and Tribal Adventures has a stash of drinks always available on the expedition boat. Drinks and anything beyond standard meals are on participants' account.
Day 7 : Ultimate Palawan Paddle
Location: Linapacan Island
Accommodation: Camp
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Morning merienda, Afternoon merienda, Sundowners
Paddle off after a leisurely breakfast on a circuitous route to Guinto Island, dropping paddle at will to snorkel and swim.
The morning will be minus the support boat as the crew replenish ice, drinking water and other supplies in a nearby community.
Sleepy Linapacan is waking up -- once you could wander across any island, meet a Tagbanua tribes person or another local, have a chat, drink a coconut -- free.
Now, the islands are valuable property, the barbed wire running down to the beach on an increasing number of islands, testament to its popularity.
Sticking to the pristine waters and the soft, sandy beaches makes this paddle particularly sublime -- kayakers are not wired as landlubbers -- and we make it to Guinto (which means gold) and back to camp!
Day 8 : Ultimate Palawan Paddle
Location: Nacpan Beach
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Morning merienda, Afternoon merienda
Board expedition boat after breakfast and breaking camp, motoring to a group of Linapacan islands which participants can paddle between and snorkel off.
After morning merienda and before lunch, the group sets off across the strait to the main island of Palawan, heading towards El Nido. The crossing will take about 90 minutes in benign conditions.
After lunch, taken en route, it will be kayaking time again with the Palawan coast to the left: a swell is common and landing on the beaches is not recommended unless you're whitewater proficient!
If participants have such a penchant, they should notify Tribal Adventures ahead: we'll board a nimble rudderless kayak or two for the fun of surfing! And, there's no charge. It's a chance for guides to show foolhardy they can be.
Nacpan beach is our destination: usually we set up camp in a resort with a lot of space to erect tents. Again, if there is room at the inn and participants want to a bungalow -- though native the rooms are simple but a tasteful delight.
Tribal Adventures will effort to book a hut for the sports therapist: gone will be the sand and oil treatment!
Meals are taken at the resort. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are prepared by the resort cook and are on the account of Tribal Adventures. Other snacks, meals, drinks are not (though you can usually access a free beer and other drinks from a cooler of drinks taken from the expedition boat. Seek out a guide at the resort where the camp is located should you rebel at paying a dollar for a beer at the resort. The cook will have a break: there will be no meriendas or sundowners supplied at camp.
Nacpan will be base for two nights.
Day 9 : Ultimate Palawan Paddle
Location: Bacuit Bay, El Nido, Helicopter Island, Cadlao Island, Matinloc Island
Accommodation: Camp
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Morning merienda, Afternoon merienda
After a leisurely breakfast, participants meet the expedition boat for a day trip to the western islands of Bacuit Bay, El Nido
In a little over an hour of motoring, kayakers can board their boats to enjoy a day of awesome paddling in another picturesque limestone karst environment.
Where to, and what direction, will depend largely upon the wind, the captain's and the lead guide's call. The beauty of a genuine sit-in sea kayak is that it can go further and get through very shallow water to reach locales tourists generally -- even those on sit-on kayaks -- cannot. But there will undoubtedly be places where there's a multitude of tourists. Where it's a must-see, we'll time it when there are fewer tourists.
Return to Nacpan base by sunset.
Day 10 : Utimate Palawan Paddle
Location: Snake Island, Cathedral Cave, El Nido, Ipil Beach
Accommodation: Camp
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Morning merienda Afternoon merienda Sundowners
After breakfast, camp dismantling and check-out of resort participants board expedition boat for cruise to point where group can kayak with wind at their backs.
Eventual destinations ahead of camp will be Snake Island and Ipil beach.
Between the destinations there's a sandbar, a couple of caves and a plethora of lagoons, coves and beaches. The snorkeling's not bad also!
Camping is banned on all the islands of El Nido, a concession to resort owners--though authorities say it's for personal security.
So, we'll be camping on a lovely beach on the mainland of Palawan between El Nido and Corong Corong. It's a daytime playground for tourists. We need to get in as most depart nearing dark. That's the plan -- and it usually works.
Our aim in camping this last night is to be in striking distance of the Big and Small Lagoons in 30 minutes, getting in ahead of crowds, perhaps getting in before anyone else. That's the norm when we depart camp at the crack of dawn, take coffee on board and have a big brunch after gliding our kayaks through both Small Lagoon and Big Lagoon.
There have been occasions when we've anchored off one of the lagoons and slept on board. Each time it's been magical -- clear skies above with a canopy of stars. With two levels there's been room enough for all on camp mattresses!
Day 11 : Ultimate Palawan Paddle
Location: Papaya Beach, Corong Corong Beach, El Nido Boutique Artcafe
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Morning merienda, Afternoon merienda at Art Cafe, El Nido
After breakfast and breaking camp, participants take to their kayaks for a paddle along the coast.
After boarding the camp gear, the expedition boat follows, shadowing the group till it gets beckoned for morning merienda.
A snorkel, then a light lunch follows, before a paddle is done in to El Nido. Most of the time it's more convenient to arrive in the more protected locale of Corong Coron, rather than the windier and wavier beachfront of El Nido. This will be the plan unless otherwise advised.
Arrival on the beach on Corong Corong will be around 2pm, and a farewell afternoon merienda hosted by Tribal Adventures will be at the Art Cafe in El Nido from 3pm.
Those planning to stay in El Nido overnight might like to check-in, shower and change and meet up at Art Cafe from 3pm. Others can arrive at the cafe as they are with their gear.
The Tribal Adventures team usually checks in to Eco Hotel, on the beach at Corong Corong. There's plenty of choice in El Nido and Corong Corong, from budget to de luxe.

Equipment, food service, drinks on tour
Kayaks & tents
During this Covid-19 period there will be extra hygiene and health protocols, with Tribal guides thoroughly cleaning sea kayaks in and around the cockpit/s, the hatches and hatch covers and carrier toggles. Life vests and spray skirts, day-trip hampers and overnight camping equipment will be cleaned and placed into plastic bags, labelled for each guest; the handle area of paddles will be wiped thoroughly with disinfectant immediately before use.
Reservations teams are asked to ascertain the sex, age, build, weight and height of each participant, and if overnight, whether bedding is double or single. On the basis of height estimate from participants we set foot rests of kayak pedals ahead. While Covid-19 protocols persist, clients need to be prepared, under instruction, to set up the interiors of their tents. Tents and shower facilities will be set up with guide and crew taking precautions including using disposable gloves and wiping down strategic parts of tent like zippers, entrance canopies. While the threat of Covid-19 persists clients will need to be willing and able to get in and out of their kayaks without physical assistance of guide and crew beyond aiding in the stabilisation of the kayaks at either ends of the kayak/s. This means that clients need to have some experience with sea kayaking in enclosed, sit-in sea kayaks. Note: if clients have no such experience they need to advise Tribal Adventures so the company can prepare sit-on sea kayak/s in lieu.
F&B, Water
Packed meals for day trips will be prepared & packed by one person only, whose hands are cleaned with soap, who is wearing disposable gloves and a mask. We also need to know of allergies and food preferences. For meals other than packed meals, as far as possible food will be cooked on site and served individually. Observing sanitation, we assign newly washed and stored dedicated plates, cups, glassware, eating utensils for each tour participant: A dispenser holding plates etc will be provided each participant.
