Day 1 : Arrive Geilo

Location: Geilo

Accommodation Name: hotel

Meals Included: Dinner

Make your own way to Geilo. If you are arriving into Oslo or Bergen today, ensure that you arrive in the morning. The last train you can catch to Geilo departs mid afternoon.
Accommodation: Our hotel is the perfect place to relax and is within walking distance from the centre, but on arrival at Geilo station, you may want a taxi and a transfer can be set up with the hotel for 75 NOK per person if you give them at least 24 hours notice. There is a cozy informal atmosphere. Facilities include restaurant, indoor swimming pool, sauna, tennis court, lounge, bar and pub.
*We would recommend you to have an extra night in both Oslo or Bergen so that you can make the most of what these cities have to offer.

Day 2 : Geilo: Choose From Various Walks, Up To 21 Km/13 Miles, 2-7 H

Location: Geilo

Accommodation Name: hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Geilo is superbly located by the Hardanger Vidda Mountain Plateau, at 800m above sea level. This plateau is a good-weather objective, for which 3 of the walking options will require a taxi at around 350 - 500 NOK, depending on the day, at the start of the day. There are a challenging walk to climb Prestholtskarvet (1863m) in the Hallingskarvet; a less challenging walk up Skarvsenden; or there is a nice, moderate moorland walk which takes you back to Geilo.
If you would like to avoid using a taxi, there is a long moorland walk to the fields of Vestreim with good views over to the Hallingskarvet. Alternatively, you could take an easy lakeside ramble, which requires no transport.
Option 1: Ascent of Prestholtskarvet (1863m), 9 km / 6.2 miles, 4-6 h, challenging.
Option 2: Prestholtrunden Route with an ascent of Skarvsenden (1705m) and descend to Prestholtseter, 6.5km / 4 miles, 3-4 h, challenging.
Option 3: Prestholtseter- Tuftelia - Vestlia, 10.4 km / 6.4 miles, 3-4 h, moderate. *People tend to do Option 3 as an extension from Options 1&2, but it can be done on its own with a taxi transfer.
Option 4: Walk around Ustedalsfjorden, 10.5 km / 6.5 miles, 2-3.5 h, easy.
Option 5: Geilo - Geilohovda - Vestreim - Geilo with optional ascent of Snøhovda, 21 km / 13 miles, 6-7 h, moderate.

Day 3 : Train Geilo To Finse, Choose From Various Walks, Up To 20 Km/12.5 Miles, 5 H

Location: Finse

Accommodation Name: chalet-style hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Take a morning train to Finse; a place first popularized by British aristocrats before the railways arrived. Both Scott and Shackleton trained here for Antarctica.
Today, there are three possible walks directly from your hotel depending upon the weather.
In good weather, strong walkers may like to attempt the ascent of Sankt Pal (1700m), a dramatic small peak and viewpoint. Then you can undertake a walk across the moorland towards the ice of the Hardanger Glacier for a picnic.
Or perhaps in poor weather, you can do a return walk along the old railway workers' track that connects Finse with Myrdal.
Option 1: Trek to Sankt Pal (1694m), 13 km / 8 miles, 4-5 h, challenging.
Option 2: Walk to the Fagernut along the Rallarvegen, 20 km / 12.5 miles, 5 h, easy/moderate.
Option 3: Trek to Blåisen (1591m) and return to Finse, 11.5 km /7.1 miles, 4 h, moderate.
Accommodation: Stay for 2 nights at a cosy chalet-style hotel with spectacular views. The hotel is a short walk from the train station. At 1222m, the hotel started as a shelter for the occupants of snowbound trains (now an increasingly rare event). Over the years this cabin has been through many upgrades. Converting it into an extraordinary hotel with the emphasis on outdoor activities within a superb landscape. Rooms are basic but comfortable and often with great views. There is a dining hall, an Edwardian-era library and a coffee shop. There is a little pub in the basement, which opens at weekends and has become a bit of a museum with railway memorabilia. You could also choose to make use of the relaxation centre with a sauna area.

Day 4 : Finse: Choose From Various Walks, Up To 20 Km/12.5 Miles, 5 H

Location: Finse

Accommodation Name: chalet-style hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

On your second day in Finse, choose another walk option, as per Day 3 description. If the weather is good, you could also make use of the option to do a local guided crampon walk up on to the glacier.
*Details on booking the glacier walk are provided in your route notes. Note that you should call at least a day in advance to check the status of the walk, as it does not necessarily run everyday and not in poor weather. The walk begins from the hotel/station area and the cost paid locally is: approx 1100 NOK. Equipment is provided, but note that your boots will need to be reasonably stiff to take a crampon. Itineraries and availability will depend on the weather conditions.

Day 5 : Train To Myrdal Then Walk To Flåm - 20 Km/12.5 Miles, 5 H

Location: Flåm

Accommodation Name: pension

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

This is a classic walk! Hand in your luggage at Myrdal for a local train transfer down to Flåm station (150 NOK per bag approx, paid locally). The walk down to Flåm is beautiful, following the lush valley route, through woods and pastures, always with the sounds of rushing waters. Eventually drop down to the Aurlandsfjord, a branch off Sognefjord.
Accommodation: A cosy basic pension which is located next to the Aurlandsfjord, only 400m from the famous Flåm railway. The pension is not too ‘flamboyant’ while it has an informal atmosphere. There is a room with an open fireplace, TV-lounge and a large garden. The rooms are the most basic of this holiday, but are warm and simple en-suites.

Day 6 : To Aurland, Option To Cruise To Aurland Or Choose From Various Walks Of 13-19 Km/8-11 Miles, 4-6 H

Location: Aurland

Accommodation Name: hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

A short bus ride or ferry journey takes you to Aurland for two nights, giving you plenty of time to walk round this beautiful area or take a cruise to Gundavangen in the Nærøyfjord.
There are some little circular walks you can do as described below. You could also choose to walk up the breathtaking Aurlandsdalen Valley, using a local bus at the start and end of the walk. In some ways this place is lost in time. From a hotel at Østerbø you can only follow a mule track into the higher pastures, enjoying the sights and sounds of this landscape: looking down into the gorge, passing great waterfalls. Another walk via a spectacular waterfall takes you on a massive ascent to a mountain called Prestevarden which has a magnificent view over the bend of the Aurlandsfjord.
Options of walks over the next two days could include:
Option 1: To Skjerdal with return via Bell farm, 13 km / 8 miles, 2 h, easy/moderate.
Option 2: Østerbø - Vassbygdi, 16.6 km / 10.3 miles, 6 h, challenging.
Option 3: Prest Summit (1363m), 22.5 km / 14 miles, 6-8 h challenging.
Accommodation: Your hotel occupies some of the oldest buildings in Aurland, and is close to the stunning fjord. It is spacious with fine rooms, there are a bar and a restaurant.

Day 7 : Aurland: Choose From Various Walks, 13-19 Km/8-11 Miles, 4-6 H

Location: Aurland

Accommodation Name: hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Another day to enjoy the walks of the area (see descriptions on Day 6). Otherwise we recommend the fjord cruise to Gundavangen in the Nærøyfjord. Part of the Sognefjord, it has been described by National Geographic magazine as the most beautiful destination in the world.
*There are two boats that offer the fjord cruise, including a quiet electric ship. Cruises can be booked online or at Flåm (from 625 NOK). You will need to go back to Flåm to board, although the older ferry will stop in Aurland.

Day 8 : Arrangements End After Breakfast

Location: Aurland

Meals Included: Breakfast

Depart from Aurland to Oslo or Bergen. Bus or taxi to Flam and then catch the scenic Myrdal-Flam train. This is a private trainline claimed to be the steepest “normal gauge” railway in the World. You should get beautiful views back to Sognefjord and around.
At Myrdal, join a mainline train back to Oslo or Bergen and then a local train to the airport for late afternoon or evening flights. Although we would recommend you to have an extra night in both Oslo or Bergen so that you can make the most of what these cities have to offer.

We always try to book ensuite rooms, if this is not possible for the dates that you want to travel then we will let you know. The hotels described are our usual choice of accommodation, however if these are not available then alternatives are used and if these are of a different standard you will be informed at the time of booking. Baths/showers: Many rooms with ensuite/private facilities have a shower rather than a bath, usually because of limited space. Some hotels/guesthouses may however have a separate room in the house where a bath is available to guests.

Grading

We grade this tour as moderate (grade 3), with some challenging options; anyone used to hill walking with a daily height gain/loss of up to 3,300 feet (1000 metres) should find the tour within their capability. Most days are a lot easier than this. There are usually walking options and experienced walkers can of course extend their range if they want to. There may be a chance to do an optional glacier walk from the hotel in Finse, which will require a local payment of 600 NOK minimum. Although items like crampons are supplied, if you want to do this guided trip, you should at least make sure that your walking boots are stiff enough to be compatible with articulated walking crampons. This option is subject to availability and weather conditions. Day Stages: The duration of walking per day varies. You will have to attend to a morning train (or a ferry transfer) on some days to get you to the next hotel; these are normally under an hour’s journey. So you have to fit in the walking with this. However, you will normally be able to spend up to 6 hours happily walking per day in most cases. This tour is not suitable for solo travellers.

Mode of Transport

Use trains and boats to get around Norway's fjords. Flights to/from Oslo and train tickets are included. Luggage transfer is provided on days 3, 5, and 6. Optional cruise to Aurland is available.

  • Trip Grading & Preparation

Match your level of fitness & requirements Please read this information carefully to find out which grade is most suited to your level of fitness and requirements. To make the most of your Walkers' Britain holiday it is essential and your responsibility to choose a trip that is well within your capabilities. All our active holidays are graded and clearly marked in each trip description. All mountains have uphill and downhill sections and by definition walking and cycling demand some effort. However all things are relative, and these grades assume that you are a reasonably active person who enjoys walking or cycling. Few trips are extreme and most allow ample time for sightseeing and enjoying the scenery. If in doubt about the grade of any holiday, please contact us for advice or request the tour dossiers, you can also chat with our team about the right travel insurance for you. Grade 1 – Introductory These trips involve walking for four to five hours per day or cycling for 15-50 km per day at a slow but steady pace. You will need a reasonable level of fitness and good health. Suggested Preparation 30 minutes of aerobic-type exercise (either road cycling or jogging), three times a week for three months leading up to your trip. Grade 2 – Introductory to Moderate These trips involve a combination of what is described in our Introductory and Moderate levels. The emphasis is on introductory activity but including several moderate stages. Grade 3 – Moderate These adventures involve walking for up to six hours per day or cycling for up to 65 km per day, at a steady pace. You will need a good level of fitness and be in good health. Suggested Preparation 45 minutes of aerobic-type exercise (road cycling or jogging) three times a week for three months leading up to your trip. Grade 4 – Moderate to Challenging This trip grading involves a combination of what is described in our Moderate and Challenging levels. The emphasis is on moderate activity but including several challenging stages. Grade 5 – Challenging These active holidays involve walking up to nine hours per day in mountainous terrain with steep ascents and descents, pass crossing & alpine weather conditions, or cycling for up to 80 km per day over undulating terrain, with some steep and sustained hills. You will need an excellent level of fitness, be prepared to carry a daypack weighing up to 8 kg and be completely comfortable in adverse weather conditions. Suggested Preparation 1 hour of aerobic-type exercise five times a week for three to six months leading up to your trip. We also recommend regular hill walking with a pack in variable weather conditions or road cycling.

  • Route notes

While our tours vary in terms of difficulty, route finding is made simple and convenient with our specially prepared package of maps and route notes. On many of the walks it is easy enough to navigate carefully using the route notes provided with a cursory glance at the map. As holidays reach the higher grades, you will need to take more care and we would expect you to have at least some knowledge of using a compass. Maps for our tours also vary considerably, from up-to-date GPS referenced additions, to old map copies which may still be the only ones obtainable for a particular area. The differences in style, grade and destinations of our tours are features that make them of continual interest and delight to our walkers & cyclists. Each set of route notes can contain the following elements relevant to the route: History and information on the region and the route you are walking. Detailed maps including points of interest and accommodation. Detailed step-by-step descriptions (with pictures) of the route and information on detours/optional additions. Transport timetables and information for getting there and away. Safety information and advice. Contact details of accommodation, transport, local representatives and emergency support. Advice for things to do along the way. Suggestions for dining and self catering.

  • How our self-guided holidays work

Self guided walking and cycling holidays offer freedom, independence and choice, allowing you to tailor your holidays in the UK & Europe to your interest and travel style. Our detailed Route Notes will contain all of the information you need to plan how you would like to approach each day, giving you the freedom to set your own pace. Hiking Norway's Fjordland

7 Sep 2022

This trip is a little more complicated to arrange than a point-to-point walking trip, but it was very worth the effort! accommodations and food were very good and the trains were scenic. The walk options varied from easy to hard, but were very beautiful. We added the extra fjord cruise from Flam to Gudvangen and back to Aurland, and it was spectacular. With a couple days in Oslo at the start and Bergen at the end we felt like we saw some real highlights in Norway. We were blessed with good weather, but be ready for cold and rain.

The hotels were well chosen and offered really good food. It's important to realize that much of the travel is not prearranged, but we were not high season so were able to book everything we needed. It would be better to arrive from Oslo than Bergen.

The Walk Norway Fjordland Self Guided Walk was excellent. UTracks gave us all the advice necessary to arrive fully prepared to enjoy the experience There were alternatives given for each day to allow for different degrees of difficulty. The accommodation was great-especially the Finse 1222 Hotel where the staff were particularly helpful and welcoming. The walks took us to places we would never normally have access to. We loved every minute.

This Fjordland trip was an enjoyable walking/hiking holiday with options for different hikes at each location. The stays were excellent with clean rooms and superb food served every evening and morning. All of the transportation is provided by the client so be prepared to carefully plan out where you are going and what time you would like to arrive. Also the cost is not included so plan carefully about budgeting transportation costs. I would highly recommend starting your tour in Oslo so that you do not have to backtrack the extra 90 km each way if you were to start from Bergen, as we did.

Hiking Norway's Fjordland

17 Sep 2024

The hotels were wonderful. The logistics getting to some of our trailhead starting points were difficult. For example, we had to hire a taxi in Geilo to get to our trail head. We hitched a ride back to the hoel after the hike. Getting from one town to the next took work figuring out the train or bus schedule. We only had 1 luggage transfer.
