Tour Overview

This is the most popular section of the Camino Frances, walking from Sarria to Santiago in 8 days. This is the last 100km of the camino, the shortest sub-section that you can do and still get your Compostela Certificate. A self-guided holiday, staying in hotels and guesthouses, explore the tranquil landscapes of Galicia, ancient towns and villages such as Portomarín and Melide, with the backdrop of dramatic landscapes such as Serra de Ligonde and the Rio Miño Valley. As with all our tours, your luggage is transferred for you, as you enjoy the trail with other pilgrims you meet along the way. Day 1 : Arrive In Sarria

Location: Sarria

Arrive in the small Galician town of Sarria. If you arrive early, we strongly recommend taking a taxi to Samos and visiting the monastery that was founded in the 6th century and has welcomed pilgrims since then.

Day 2 : Sarria - Portomarín | 22Km

Location: Sarria, Portomarín

Accommodation: Hotel

Setting off for Portomarín, pass Sarria Castle and start your first day on the camino, walking mainly along small country roads and a few pathways. Most of the roads are tree-lined and will provide good shade in the sun. There are hamlets every kilometre or so no need to worry about water or food. Sit down and take a short rest whenever needed and hear interesting stories from other pilgrims. Upon arrival in Portomarín, we recommend a visit to the Church of San Juan.

Day 3 : Portomarín - Palas De Rei | 24Km

Location: Portomarín, Palas de Rei

Today the camino crosses the Minho River and then steadily climbs upwards before passing through Gonzar and Castromaior, home to the tiny Romanesque Church of Santa Maria. Continue along country roads edged by bright yellow gorse, pine and oak trees to reach the high point of today’s walk at Sierra de Ligonde (750m), then descend to the old hamlet of Ligonde, once a popular resting point along the camino. For the last 3km, walk on a dirt track alongside the main road leading into Palas de Rei.

Day 4 : Palas De Rei - Melide | 14Km

Location: Palas de Rei, Melide

Pilgrims consider this section the start of the countdown because, shortly after Coto, there are stone markers at the side of the path with the distance to Santiago marked on them. Much of the route is shaded. You can also ask your hosts to be taken to Pambre Castle in the morning and take a shortcut to Coto, away from the busy roads.

Day 5 : Melide - Arzúa | 14Km

Location: Melide, Arzúa

Leave Melide behind and continue the walk to Arzúa. Shortly after Melide, the route goes through oak and eucalyptus forests. Melide is where the Camino Primitivo merges with the Camino Frances. Relax on the river bank at Ribadiso before ascending to Arzúa.

Day 6 : Arzúa - O Pedrouzo/Amenal | 19/22Km

Location: Arzúa, O Pedrouzo, O Amenal

Just before you leave Arzúa, pick up some delicious local cheese for lunch, then continue through the Old Quarter of the town with the trail then leading you past large oak trees, which give way to meadows. Visit the medieval shrine at Santa Irene and the Baroque Fountain of Healing Waters.

Walking for the day: 19.3km, 4-5h, ↑200m ↓225m (22km if you overnight in Amenal)

Day 7 : O Pedrouzo/Amenal - Santiago De Compostela | 19.4/16Km

Location: O Pedrouzo, O Amenal, Santiago de Compostela

It is the final stage. Walk through rural terrain and eucalyptus groves. At Monte del Gozo, pilgrims historically make one last stop at the spring in Lavacolla to wash their face and feet before arriving at the Cathedral. Enter the ancient city of Santiago de Compostela and enjoy this celebratory moment at the Cathedral, along with many other pilgrims.

Day 8 : Departure

Compostela/Pilgrim’s Passport

You need to get your passports stamped in churches, restaurants or hotels along the way. At the end of the walk, in Santiago de Compostela, you can obtain your Compostela Certificate. A minimum of two stamps per day is required to obtain the certificate.
Is there a supplement for solo travellers?

If you’re travelling in a group, a supplement applies to group members who would like to have a room of their own This holiday is available for solo travellers; a supplement will be charged as accommodation and luggage transfer costs are not shared (we never mix and match – solo travellers will be accommodated in single rooms)
Difficulty and terrain

This walk is graded easy to moderate and includes walks of 19km per day on average; the terrain is flat or hilly without steep ascents or descents, with a mixture of dirt roads, woodland paths, minor roads and some busier roads close to the bigger towns and cities. The routes are well-marked and the itinerary is very easy to follow. The route is marked with yellow painted arrows and a yellow shell on a blue background. We strongly advise you to follow only marked trails and never shorten the path through unknown and unmarked terrain. We will provide you with maps, and you can call our 24/7 local assistance phone number anytime.

When to go

This trip is available all year round, from January till the end of December. The best months to visit are April – June and September – October as in summer months it may become too hot (and crowded). The flexibility of self-guided holidays means that there are no fixed dates and you can start your trip on any date during the season.

Do you operate a “single share” option and how does it work?

Accommodations in double or twin rooms (solo travellers are usually accommodated in single rooms at an extra cost; we never mix and match)
What happens if I need to change my holiday date once I’ve booked?

If possible, and entirely at the discretion of the Tour Operator, a change of the dates may be possible without charging an amendment fee, provided that it is requested at least 30 days before the departure date. In some cases, we will still have to pass to you any non-refundable charges imposed by our suppliers. In all other cases, change of dates will normally be treated as a cancellation.
Will the accommodation included meet local health and safety regulations?

Walking Fishermens trail in western Portugal will be a memory for life. We loved every minute of our week. All arrangements worked perfectly, from accommodation to luggage transport to questions we had before setting off. My wife and I booked the Lechweg short break hike with the natural adventure company this Fall and we’re very happy with our experience. I noticed one of the reviews questioning what they (natural adventure co) provide. That’s a fair question and from my perspective as a USA citizen, they provided a very important liaison/conduit role into the EU that would be prohibitive or downright impossible for a non EU citizen hiking/biking in Europe. In addition, I have found that in dealing directly with a few European companies directly, information does not always flow as smoothly as we like. The natural adventure company’s communication style fit our liking perfectly in that we receive a fast and thorough response with every question. They are prompt and helpful. They did subcontract with another company for boots on the ground support but the hotel reservations and itinerary were in house. We would definitely use the natural adventure company again no question.

This was our first ever cycle holiday so expectations where high. And Natural Adventure delivered with a vengeance. Everything was so well organised and friendly. Our contact at HQ Dalila was friendly, concerned and lightning fast in her responses. The trip itself was well designed to show you a lot in a short timespan but dayly distances where very doable leaving lots of time to divert or spent in the lovely overnight towns. The hotels ranged from cosy and homey to lavish and extravagant which was a real nice surprise at every end of the day. We will defintely be back for more! TNX SO MUCH GUYS!

AVOID OR BOOK DIRECT Whilst I’d 100% recommend hiking the Camino, unfortunately I couldn’t recommend The Natural Adventure Company to anyone. We signed up for the Relaxed Portuguese Camino - however, the organisation was woeful. None of the private transfers showed up, the welcome pack wasn’t delivered on time, and many of the hotels were well-below standard - including one where the manager was extremely aggressive to both us and other customers. During the trip, there was no proactive support from the Natural Adventure, and their customer service was appalling. Even after the tour, I tried to contact the company to draw their attention to the myriad of other 1 star reviews for the hotel in question - which includes reviewers stating the hotel owner physically assaulted them - but unfortunately they weren’t interested. As other reviews have pointed out below, you should also beware that The Natural Adventure simply subcontract the entirety of their tours to other providers. So if you still want to sign up for this tour, you could cut out the middle man and book the EXACT same tour directly with Portugal Green Walks - for less money!
