Tour Overview

Join us on an unforgettable four-day excursion along the Icelandic south coast to the breathtaking glacier lagoon, Jokulsárlón, where seals are swimming between the icebergs and the white of the ice mixes up with the blue of the sky. Your eyes will also meet with powerful waterfalls, volcanic sand beaches and the biggest glacier in Europe, Vatnajokull, where you will have the chance to explore while hiking. DAY 1 Snæfellsnes Peninsula Hopping through the magnificent and picturesque sites, you’ll see steep glacial-carved mountains, endless black beaches, moss topped lava fields, the amazing Kirkjufell Mountain (Arrowhead Mountain) volcanic craters, sci-fi-esque coastal cliffs topped off by the volcanic glacier Snæfellsjokull where Jules Verne set the beginning of the Journey to the Center of the Earth. DAY 2 The Golden Circle an unforgettable expedition with a small group on the ultimate Golden Circle tour. You will visit the famous Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir and the surrounding geothermal area. The day also includes a visit to Kerið volcanic crater, and a stop at a traditional Icelandic farm to see and pet some horses and get a taste of home made Icelandic ice cream. DAY 3 The first stop is at Seljalandsfoss waterfall where you can walk behind the tumbling water flow and feel the vibrations of the water hitting the ground. Thirsty? Just open your mouth. Right next to it is the waterfall Gljúfrabúi which snugly tucked in a gorge hidden from most. Gljúfrabúi actually means Canyon Dweller in English. To reach the waterfall, you must first test your balance by bouncing on rocks lying in the river bed. A failure means instant foot wetness and a good laugh by your co-travellers. Skógafoss Prepare to meet the pearl of the South Coast, Skógafoss waterfall. Majestically tucked in a wide gorge, the waterfall tumbles down 60 metres from up above a cliff into a small river, producing a cloud of mist and spray that rainbows like to dance in during sunshine. Try to warm up for the glacier by running up the 527 steps to the top... Your guide will be timing you! Reynisfjara - Black Sand Beach Heading further east, we visit the black sand beach of Reynisfjara where the Atlantic coastline presents massive waves hitting the unique basalt columns in the cliffs above the sand. Rock pillars in the water and the cliffs of Dýrhólaey are seen in the distance. This area of the south is also a paradise for bird lovers, as Puffins and dozens of other unique species nest on top of these cliffs in the summertime from June to August. DAY 4 We start at Jokulsárlón glacier lagoon, a 200m deep glacial lake fed by Breiðamerkurjokull, an outlet glacier of Europe’s largest glacier. Fed enormous icebergs all year round the lagoon is usually filled with ice that floats south. Troll Expeditions will give you the opportunity to book a boat ride between the icebergs during summer time and get a closer look of the millenary ice. If boating is not your thing, then we walk alongside the glacier lagoon enjoying the magnificent views and dead silence of Icelandic nature. Diamond Beach On the other side of the road the icebergs from Jokulsárlón glacier lagoon float into the Atlantic Ocean where they are quickly thrown back to shore by the tide and winds. This black sand beach is full of smaller ice rocks in all shapes and sizes, sparkling like diamonds in the daylight. The ice itself comes in all shades of white and blue forming beautiful contrasts, guaranteed to make your Instagram account pop! To complete our perfect adventure we will hike an outlet glacier spawning from the one of the largest glaciers in the country. After meeting our highly trained glacier guides and strapping on our safety and glacier equipment, including helmets, harnesses, crampons and ice axes we hike on the ice until we reach the ice caves. Please be ready at 8:00 am at you selected pick up location. We start picking up at the bus stops around central Reykjavik and then move on to the locations outside of the downtown area. The pick up process usually takes up to 30-40 minutes.

Kindly notice that you are responsible for informing the guide if you have booked extras (hiking boots & waterproof clothing): they apply to the 24h cancellation policy and become non-refundable once we have left Reykjavik.

Clothing & hiking boots

It is very important to be properly dressed for this tour with several layers for keeping warm. Make sure to wear outdoors clothing, waterproof external layers, hat, gloves and good hiking boots (hard on the sole and with ankle protection).

Communication

We highly recommend checking your email before departure, to make sure the tour is still running as scheduled. If the tour happens to get cancelled due to severe weather conditions then a cancellation email will be sent out.

How cold is Iceland?

Summer temperatures are around 15°C with the north and east often being the warmest parts in the summer but coldest in winter. Average January temperatures in Reykjavík, at around zero, are actually higher than those in New York.
How difficult are glacier hikes?

We offer glacier hiking tours in Skaftafell and one in Sólheimajökull. Both locations either easy or moderate in difficulty. Our tours are considered to be safe for anyone in good physical condition. If you are fit to walk for about an hour on an uneven surface a glacier hike is for you. Longer tours will be more challenging in endurance and some areas of the glacier. We also recommend you remember that we offer all the safety equipment necessary and you will be hiking with a professional and certified glacier guide. If you have specific questions regarding one of our glacier tours, feel free to contact us.
Iceland in the summer or in the winter?

Each season has its charm Iceland in the winter has the northern lights, the coziness of being at home, knitting and eating winter food. Iceland in the summer has the midnight sun, the friendliness of the outdoors and summer food! We love this land, any time of the year!
What kind of money is used in Iceland?

All major credit card are accepted. We use the Icelandic króna (ISK). All major currencies can be exchanged at the airport and banks. You can also find ATMs all over the country. Apple Pay works in most stores.
Do Icelanders speak English?

Most Icelanders speak English fluently. In fact, they welcome the opportunity. So, don’t be shy about approaching an Icelander.

What is the luggage limit on multi-day tours?

On tours, you can take one bag with you (max 24 inch). You can also take a backpack to keep inside the bus. 2 passengers traveling together can take 1 larger bag together instead of 2 smaller bags. If you purchase extra luggage, then we will store the extra luggage in our office. If there is room on the bus then the luggage can go with you if you pay the extra luggage fee - but we can't guarantee that.
What is the standard tip for tour guides in Iceland?

Tourism in Iceland is young and there is no custom for donating tips nor is it mandatory or expected but greatly appreciated if you wish to show your appreciation in that way.
What should I bring with me?

The weather in Iceland is very unpredictable. To enjoy the tours, it is essential to bring warm clothes with a waterproof layer. Beanie, gloves, and shoes with ankle support. For tours during winter: warm clothing as the first layer, waterproof outdoor jacket and pants, hiking boots with high ankle protection, a hat, and gloves are ideal. For tours during summer, bringing a light rain jacket and pants is in most cases enough protection. Icelanders often say, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes”. Jeans are not recommended for outdoor trips as they become very heavy and cold when wet. • Warm clothes (first layer) • Waterproof outdoor clothing (second layer) (available for rent when booking) • Hiking boots (available for rent when booking) • Swimsuit and a towel • Joy and happiness!
Do you operate a “single share” option and how does it work?

No. A single fee supplement is mandatory for solo travelers on all multiday tours to ensure your private room in our accommodation. There is no way to opt-out of a single-fee supplement if you are a solo traveler. If you are travelling with a friend, you can join them in a room and no fee would be payable.

I did the South Coast...

I did the South Coast and Glacier hike with Gylif. He drove all of us to the different locations and told us fascinating things about volcanoes, the land, and energy generation. It was a very enjoyable educational experience. The waterfalls were all beautiful, and I drank the most amazing water. When we finally got to the glacier to hike on top of, he made sure we all safely put on our equipment and gave us a lot of different safety tips about hiking. I'm very prone to falling in general, but I did not fall down once and some of the things he told us are things I can apply to other walking activities. I would love to do the other expeditions and look forward to it!

My 12 year old daughter and I did a 3 day tour of Southern Iceland in Feb 2024 and it was superb. Our guide (Elisa) was fantastic - knowledgeable and lovely. We learned so much from her about Icelandic culture and history as we drove around the rugged landscape. We saw so many fabulous places on our trip - the tour is EXCELLENT value for money. It covers the minibus costs, entry to places and activities and 2 nights in a hotel (incl. breakfast). It was a long time in the bus but when you're looking out of the window at the ever changing landscape it didn't feel so long. Around each bend the view is completely different. Absolutely loved the tour and would gladly go with Troll on a future tour.

I really enjoyed the 3-day South Coast and Golden circle tour. The views were phenomenal and our guide Oihane was nice and introduced many nice facts about the landscapes. She even went above and beyond to take us to some secret scenes not on the list. The glacier hike and blue ice cave tour was just amazing!

My partner and I did the snorkelling exploration through silfra with Kevin. It was amazing! Highlight of the trip for sure. Kevin is a fantastic host who took great pictures, was funny and entertaining whilst making us feel completely safe throughout! Their van is heated for you to change in which is very welcomed as when we did it the weather was -5 and snowing! Will recommend to all friends who plan on travelling to Iceland in the future. 10/10

Excellent tour! Siggy was a fantastic guide and the itinerary was robust. (Bummed we didn’t get to see the Northern Lights but that wasn’t their fault). The accommodations were mixed - second night was fantastic: nice room, yummy home cooked food. The first night hotel was less memorable but clean and safe. I would definitely recommend !

It was truly a wonderful trip! During these eight days of travel, we traveled around Iceland, getting to know the main attractions in each region. Our guide John always led us safely in the most adverse weather conditions, wind, snow and rain. John always reserved a special place for us to visit and a wonderful restaurant to try the local cuisine, everything was always very tasty! Finally, we were able to see the Aurora Borealis! An unforgettable trip! Thank you Troll expeditions!!

It was a great trip. Oscar was our driver and the guide during the trip, and Maggie was our guide on the glacier. It is a long trip. We visited two amazing waterfalls, a black sand beach and the highlight of the trip - a hike on the glacier. I cannot emphasize enough how important is the proper clothing. I was on this trip at the end of March; it was still very cold with cold winds. You must wear ankle high hiking boots, pants and long johns, and a few layers of clothing, warm gloves, a scarf and a hat. And sun glasses. Have water and some food. There are line up often at the stops. Be prepared for a real hike on a glacier. If you never hike then don’t sign up because you affect the experience of other people on that trip. I am over 60 years old and I had no problems. The trip is very well organized, and the guides were competent and made sure that we were always safe. They were knowledgeable and kind. I highly recommend this trip. Great experience!

Me and my wife had a 6 day tour with our guide Jon Hilmarsson. I feel so lucky to have been escorted around Iceland with Jon. His knowledge, humor, and love of Iceland really shows. He went above and beyond on our tour, stopping at secret places along the way that weren't even on the schedule so that we could take a couple pictures and see the views. We also felt extremely safe during this tour. We highly recommend using this company, and again, huge thanks to Jon for being our guide.

Had an amazing three day tour. Arni was a great tour guide that was patient with the group, had a good sense of humor, and provided lots of information about Iceland. We had Adam as our glacier tour guide and he was also really good and friendly. We had all kinds of weather from the sun to a snowstorm. The hotels we stayed at were all comfortable and we found good food nearby each day. I would highly recommend the tour when you come to Iceland.
