The hiker(s) begin the ascent to the summit very early in the morning (between midnight and two in the morning) over steep, heavy scree or snow up to Gilman's point, which is positioned on the crater flange. The highest peak in Africa, Uhuru Peak, is now reached after more hiking and ascent. Everywhere you turn, there are breathtaking vistas. To show your friends and family, hikers can get their photos taken at the peak. From there, we descend to the Horombo camping area, pausing at Kibo for lunch and a break before doing so. This ascent to the peak begins in the dark and requires the use of headlamps or flashlights.
