An enthralling collision of ancient traditions and fast-paced metropolises, Japan offers endless adventures to be had and a rich culture to delve into. Don't miss the neon-lit Tokyo, the cultural capital Kyoto, or Hiroshima, now a symbol of peace and rebirth. Take a trip up into the Japanese Alps to witness the Insta-famous Snow Monkeys or if you prefer to spend your time sun-soaked, head to the islands of Okinawa.

@_lisamward_'s Top Tips

"The best time to arrive at this top tourist attraction in the city is just before sunrise. Avoid the bustling crowds that will emerge later in the day for a more peaceful experience."

What do you love most about Inari Shrine?

"It's something completely unique and awe-inspiring. Walking through the colourful shrines with the rising sun breaking through the trees was the perfect way to start my day!"

Must pack items for Inari Shrine

"Comfortable walking shoes! There are many, many stairs to scale to the top of the trail so flip flops won't cut it."

Benefits of a tour guide for Inari Shrine

"There's an abundance of history to this attraction, as well as a couple of paths less trodden on by tourists, so a guide is brilliant for shedding light on these for a more enriching visit."

Favourite time of year to visit Inari Shrine

"Late autumn - Kyoto is very busy, but late autumn is slightly more manageable, and it makes for a more comfortable walk up all the thousands of stairs."

@Trvljunky's Top Tips

"Do not rush through Sensō-ji. Spend a morning or afternoon to really take in the scene and mood of the temple."

Aside from being a place of worship, what cultural aspects make this special?

"Kimono culture is on full display at Sensō-ji. This applies to females and males. You can rent a kimono to enjoy the experience as well."

@Trvljunky's Top Tips

"Respect that this is a Buddhist temple. Do not intrude on private worship and pay attention to 'no photo' zones."

A 'MUST' whilst you're there?

"Join in the fun and get a Mikuji - fortunes you can purchase for 100 Yen."

What do you love most about Sensō-ji?

"While a place of worship, the energy and street scene is to be enjoyed. The road to the temple is lined with small shops to buy local gifts."

What do you love most about Naoshima Island?

"If you love contemporary art and nature, Naoshima Island is the place to go because it combines both beautifully. Moreover, it has gorgeous beaches, which can't hurt! "

@vahineotaku_travels 's Top Tips

"Rent an electric bike or a scooter to have the freedom to stop at any art installation when you want to, because they are scattered all around the island, and buses are not that frequent. "

A 'MUST' whilst you're there?

"Yayoi Kusama is one of my favourite artists, so seeing her famous pumpkins and her collaboration with Tadao Ando at Valley Gallery was a must-do!"

@vahineotaku_travels 's Top Tips

"The tickets to the popular Chichu Art Museum tend to sell out quickly, so I highly recommend booking several weeks before your visit."

Sightseeing

What do you love most about Kamakura?

"Kamakura is a perfect combination of beautiful temples, cool beaches, gorgeous nature and nice cafés only 50 minutes from Tokyo, so you can even plan a day trip there if you are short on time. "

A 'MUST' whilst you're there?

"Paying a visit to the Great Buddha is an absolute must. It is just so majestic! But temple hopping in lesser-known places is also wonderful to discover hidden gems away from the crowds."

@vahineotaku_travels 's Top Tips

"Rent an electric bike to really enjoy Kamakura at your pace and get to lesser-known places, and research which flowers are in bloom the season you visit because their gardens are really next-level!"

Favourite time of year to visit Kamakura

"Kamakura is very famous for its hydrangea garden, so I'd recommend visiting in June when it's hot and the flowers are in full bloom. Then you can enjoy both the flowers and the beaches!"

What do you love most about Akita?

"From soaking in a rustic hot spring in the mountains to unique festivals, Akita is the place where you can experience real, traditional Japan. There are so many once-in-a-lifetime adventures here!"

A 'MUST' whilst you're there?

"The top attraction in Akita is the Samurai District. Tour samurai houses from the 1600s, learn about the deep history and try food unique to Akita. Don't forget to say hi to the famous Akita dog, too!"

@shelby.abroad's Top Tips

"A lot of places in rural Japan are spread out, which is not a worry when on a tour but otherwise a car is advised. Most big tourist attractions can be reached by train and/or bus, but a tour or car is the best way to make the most of your time there!"

"This temple has an awe-inspiring display of Buddhist carvings and traditional Japanese architecture, some souvenir shops, and a range of different gardens."

@sayakakondo_'s Top Tips

"Renting a car is a great option to travel here as public transportation in some of the Japanese countryside is time-consuming because of the limited bus schedule. "
