Tanzanite Experience Tour
Mined only in Tanzania, the beautiful blue December birthstone, known as tanzanite, is a unique souvenir of your East African adventure and a must-have in any jewellery lover’s collection. The Tanzanite Experience is a 1 to 2-hour tour that introduces the history of this magnificent mineral, including how it was discovered and first mined. You will enjoy the opportunity to see for yourself how each precious gem is graded and cut. Savour the opportunity to ogle tanzanite up close and handle rough and polished stones. Once you have a true appreciation of this gem, you can spoil yourself by purchasing a genuine, well cut and certified tanzanite piece at a charming boutique store. The Tanzanite Experience boutiques are brimming with beautiful displays dedicated to the fascinating blue violet gemstone. It is said that tanzanite is “1,000 times rarer than diamonds” and, found at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, is incredibly exclusive to Tanzania. Exhibiting magnificent blue and violet hues, tanzanite was first discovered in 1967. World famous New York jewellers “Tiffany & Co”, declared it “the most beautiful blue stone to be discovered in 2,000 years”, and named it Tanzanite. A must have vibrant blue gem for your bejewelled trinket box.

Visit Shanga glass and weaving workshop
The essence of a tour of the Shanga glass and weaving workshop Shanga is the Swahili word for bead and this tour gives artistically-minded travellers the opportunity to work with beautiful glass beads while supporting an income-generating initiative for the disabled. Spend the morning or afternoon with the disabled workers at Shanga, an Elewana initiative based at Arusha Coffee Lodge. Get in touch with your creative side, helping to put together beautiful Shanga necklaces, made from recycled powder glass beads. Enjoy a tour of the workshop before trying your hand at creating your own masterpiece. This small business employs over 50 disabled, mute and deaf people and produces a range of gorgeous necklaces made from beads and a selection of vibrant silk, kanga, chiffon and voile coloured fabrics. A brief stint that started out in 2006, with the idea to create shanga necklaces for a Christmas fair has flourished to the point that this business is now a sustainable operation, supplying retail outlets across Tanzania and abroad. The workshop is a hive of creative activity and everything from glass blowing recycled bottles, recycling old pots and pans, paper making, beading, bead making, weaving and metal work is done here. An institution in Arusha, the business prides itself on providing a protective, consistent and warm environment for Tanzanians with disabilities; and artfully crafting stunning products from waste materials. These recycled and reused items are a beautiful adornment to your home.

Serengeti Balloon Safari
Departing at sunrise, a hot air balloon provides a superb view of the plains. Flying low over big herds make this one of the best ways to witness the Great Migration. Despite the early wake-up call and freezing temperatures, remaining unnoticed by the Big Five makes the experience completely worth it.

Arusha City Tour
Arusha is lush and green and offers myriad glorious experiences to enjoy. Cherry pick your options, and soak up the wonderful ambiance and marvel at the creative entrepreneurial skills of the local people. A simply must do is a guided walk around one of Arusha’s coffee plantations, including a tour of the coffee tasting plant providing insight into the brewing process. Arabica and Robusta coffee are Tanzania’s largest export, and they have polished the art of coffee making to near perfection. Usually coffee plantations are beautifully scenic and these are no exception. This is due to the main crop being sheltered by grandiose trees making for some spectacular sights. For an insightful experience visit Shanga, an Elewana initiative based at Arusha Coffee Lodge where physically challenged craftspeople create beautiful necklaces from recycled powder glass beads. This is an incredible business venture that retails throughout Tanzania and abroad, and helps so many deaf and disabled people earn a salary who otherwise would have nothing. After an informative tour of the colourful workshop, you can spend the afternoon browsing the city’s Maasai Market and Cultural Heritage Centre for traditional handicrafts. Maasai Market is a sensational sensory experience. Thrust into a slice of whirling Tanzanian life have your wits about you and prepare to barter. A fabulously lively atmosphere offers an abundance of sellers peddling their wares of exotic fruit, coffee, nuts and spices. If you are on the hunt for carefully crafted African art, sculptures and artefacts, head to the Cultural Heritage craft mall for the best pieces in the city. Feeling famished and in need of some delicious food and sustenance? Go local and feast on “Nyama Choma”, Swahili for roast meat. Spoilt for choice Arusha offers delicious no-frills street food. Another must have is ‘Chicken on the Bonnet’ with plates piled high with Indian style chutneys, naans and salads. As an alternative to local food, the restaurant at Arusha Coffee Lodge, George’s Greek Tavern or Blue Heron Restaurant which serves salads, pizzas and sandwiches are all great choices.
