Great Rail Journeys of Switzerland: The Glacier Express and the Golden Pass
8 Days
Visiting: Geneva, Zermatt, Interlaken, Montreux, Lausanne
Tour Overview
A trip on the Glacier Express is on the bucket-list of many, thanks to the unbeatable combination of spectacular scenery and effortless Swiss rail travel. Don’t be misled by the term ‘Express’ though: while there are no intermediate stops this is in fact a very leisurely journey averaging around 24mph, allowing plenty of time to enjoy the magnificent Alpine scenery through the panoramic windows and skylights on the train. There is a host of other scenic rail journeys to enjoy, beginning with an eco-friendly ride to the summit of the Gonergrat, one of the finest mountain-top panoramas in the world. A combination of train and cable car takes us to another mountain summit, the Schilthorn, which will be instantly recognisable from the Bond classic On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Another culture reference follows as we take the Golden Pass panoramic train to Montrreux on Lake Geneva – the inspiration for Deep Purple’s Smoke on the Water. Further highlights here in the French-speaking part of Switzerland include a ride in original Belle Epoque carriages to the top of the Rochers de Naye and a relaxing cruise on Lake Geneva.
Highlights
Itinerary
Day 1
Accommodation Name: Hotel Sonne, Zermatt
Meals Included: Dinner
We fly from London to Geneva (regional flight connections and overnight accommodation before or after the tour available on request). On arrival we board the train for Zermatt. On arrival we transfer to our hotel – Zermatt is car-free so electrically powered vehicles are used.
Day 2
Accommodation Name: Hotel Sonne, Zermatt
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner
Following breakfast we depart from Zermatt on the Gonergrat Railway, the world’s first fully electrified cog railway, now a modern, eco-friendly railway, equipped with a regenerative braking system that generates electricity on the descent and so saves energy. The journey to the summit of the Gornergrat (3,089m) takes 33 minutes with a vertical climb of 1,469m, over dramatic bridges, through galleries and tunnels, across forests of larch and Swiss stone pine and past rocky ravines and mountain lakes. The panorama from the mountain-top is among the finest in the world. The views take in the Monte Rosa massif with Switzerland’s highest peak (Dufourspitze, 4,634 m); the second-largest glacier in the Alps, the Gorner Glacier; and a total of 29 mountains above 4,000 m, including, of course, the Matterhorn in all its iconic glory.
After time to enjoy and photograph the view we return to Zermatt, where the rest of the day is free to explore the bustling town which is a mecca for mountaineers.
Day 3
Accommodation Name: Hotel Sunstar, Grindelwald
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner
After breakfast today we have a treat in store as we take the Glacier Express from Zermatt to Andermatt. The term Express is something of a misnomer, referring to the fact that there are no changes between Zermatt and St Moritz rather than the speed of the train, which averages around 24mph. This leisurely pace, coupled with the huge panoramic windows and skylights of the modern coaches, allows ample opportunity to enjoy the stunning mountain scenery as we descend the Matter Valley, in a journey of around three hours.
On arrival in Andermatt we continue by coach to our hotel in the glacier village of Grindelwald, another scenic journey of around two and a half hours featuring lakes and mountains. Note that our luggage will be transported separately.
Day 4
Accommodation Name: Hotel Sunstar, Grindelwald
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner
Following breakfast today we travel by train and cable car via Lauterbrunnen and Mürren to the mountain summit of the Schilthorn (2,970m). The revolving restaurant here, Piz Gloria, shot to fame when it was used as the location for Ernst Stavro Blofeld’s lair in the 1969 Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and retains the name given to it then. The views are indeed glorious, taking in the iconic Alpine peaks of Jungfrau, Mönch and Eiger as well as the Jura and Vosges mountains.
Descending from the mountain we enjoy some free time in Interlaken, situated as the name suggests between two lakes, Brienz and Thun. There will be an opportunity to visit the Japanese Garden, the garden of the Casino and the park surrounding the castle (entrances not included).
We return to our hotel in Grindelwald.
Day 5
Accommodation Name: Hotel Astra, Vevey
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner
Following breakfast we check out of the hotel and transfer to Interlaken, from where we take the train to Zweisimmen. Here we board the Golden Pass panoramic train for a journey of just over two hours that takes us to Montreux on the shores of Lake Geneva, passing from the German-speaking Bernese Oberland to the francophone canton of Vaud. The afternoon is free to explore the town, famous for its music festivals – indeed it is the setting for the classic Deep Purple track Smoke on the Water which was also recorded here.
We continue by rail to Vevey. Note that once again our luggage will be transported separately.
Day 6
Accommodation Name: Hotel Astra, Vevey
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner
After breakfast this morning we explore Vevey, home to the world headquarters of the international food and beverage company Nestlé, founded here in 1867. Actor and comedian Charlie Chaplin lived here from 1952 until his death in 1977.
In the afternoon we take we take the train along the shore of Lake Geneva to Montreux, and there enjoy a return trip on the narrow gauge rack railway to the top of the mountain Rochers de Naye (2,042m), with breathtaking views back towards Lake Geneva. The electrically powered line is operated using original Belle Époque carriages.
Day 7
Accommodation Name: Hotel Astra, Vevey
Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner
Following breakfast we take the train along the shore of Lake Geneva once again, this time travelling as far as Lausanne, which hosts the International Olympic Committee as well as over 50 international sports associations. Here we visit the Olympic Museum, which tells the story of the history of the ancient Olympic Games and the rebirth of the modern Games in the 19th century, and its sculpture garden. We also spend some time exploring the lovely gardens surrounding the Belle Époque hotel, the Beau-Rivage Palace.
We then enjoy a cruise on Lake Geneva (known here as Lac Léman) to the Château de Chillon, one of the most visited medieval castles in Europe, built on a highly defensible islet at the eastern end of the lake.
Day 8
Today we must check out of our hotel and travel by train to Geneva airport for our return flight to London. On arrival our group will disperse or travel on to regional airports.

Check out our Q&As
-
Will I receive more details of the holiday before I travel?
You will receive detailed joining instructions around 10 days prior to you departure, but you are of course welcome to contact us at any time should you have any queries.
-
What facilities do your coaches have?
Generally, our coaches have reclining seats, air-conditioning and toilets, however this cannot always be guaranteed as sometimes we have to use smaller vehicles. Toilets are recommended for emergency use only and regular comfort stops will be made throughout your holiday while travelling around.
-
Do I have to go on the included excursions?
Absolutely not. You are more than welcome to spend the day at your hotel or exploring independently should you wish. All we ask is that you inform your Tour Manager, so they are not left waiting for you to join the group.
-
Is there time to relax?
Although our itineraries may seem jam-packed, boasting access to some of the most exclusive sites across the UK and beyond, a Brightwater Holiday is just that: a holiday. Each trip will counter in more than enough free-time for you to explore places at your own leisure. And with most nights and the majority of meals being included in our tour prices, you can relax in hand-picked accommodation.
-
Do I need to be an expert?
Absolutely not! Although some of our tours are specifically focused on one thing, all you need to enjoy a Brightwater holiday is interest and bags of enthusiasm! Even on our most specialist tours, we take travellers from all skill levels, from experts to beginners.
-
How fit or active do I need to be for one of your holidays?
You need to be able to get on and off the coach unassisted, and most – but not all – coaches have a kneel facility that lowers the front step for ease of boarding
-
Do you have self-drive holidays?
Yes, we do – tailored to your exact requirements!
-
What’s the luggage allowance on your coaches?
There’s no fixed limit, but we generally say one large suitcase to go in the luggage compartment and a smaller bag that you can take onto the coach with you. For flight-inclusive holidays, we include a luggage allowance of at least 20kg.
-
Where are your departure points?
UK garden holidays generally depart from London, with additional pick-ups depending on the route of the coach, while holidays to Scotland depart from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth, with Dundee, Inverness and Aberdeen sometimes included. All Eurostar holidays depart from London St. Pancras and flight-inclusive holidays depart from one or more of the main London airports, with regional flights .
-
What about the company that will be kept?
For single travellers, those with a companion or even those travelling in a larger group, you'll find that the signature of any Brightwater Holiday is the company. You won't ever be travelling with a group of strangers, instead, you'll find yourself surrounded by like-minded people with a strong shared interest who will soon become your firm friends.

From creating bespoke quality garden and special interest tours for groups and individuals alike, we have made it our business to make our guests' travel dreams come true.
-
Why is there a single supplement?
Unfortunately, single room supplements are charges that are often imposed on us as a company when we book rooms for group holidays. However, most hotels do charge less for single occupancy, and we always pass this saving on to our solo travellers in the form of a modest single supplement.
-
How much are your optional excursions?
Prices start from as little as £20, but please contact our friendly team for questions about specific itineraries or excursions.
-
Can I pre-book my coach seats?
Yes, you can. In the case of front seats, guests with limited mobility are given priority. Please get in touch with our friendly team to discuss any requirements you may have.
