After a scrumptious breakfast, embark on an enlightening excursion to Somnathpur, a renowned destination located approximately thirty miles from Mysore in the picturesque South Indian countryside. Due to incidents such as fires, the original palace, which was constructed from wood and mud, underwent multiple reconstructions. The present-day Mysore Palace was meticulously constructed between 1897 and 1912 under the patronage of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV. Day 4 : Mysore - Sravanbelagola - Hassan - Chikmagalur (200 Km, 4 Hrs Approx)
Location: Chikkamagaluru
After breakfast, we begin our journey to Hassan in the north. En route, we make a stop at Sravanabelagola, a site of great religious and historical significance to the Jain community. Sravanabelagola, located in the Hassan district of Karnataka, India, is home to the colossal monolithic statue of Lord Bahubali (also known as Gommateshwara), one of the tallest free-standing statues in the world. This magnificent work of art is carved from a single block of granite and stands approximately 57 feet tall. As Lord Bahubali is revered as a symbol of renunciation, self-control, and enlightenment, this statue is a revered work of Jain art and a crucial pilgrimage site for Jains around the world.
As our journey continues, we arrive in Hassan and check into our hotel. The afternoon is devoted to exploring Belur and Halebid, both of which are home to magnificent Hoysala temples such as the Channekeshava Temple and the Hoysaleswara Temple.
Our first stop is the Belur Chennakesava Temple, a magnificent tribute to Lord Vishnu and a true architectural masterpiece of Hoysala. This temple was constructed by King Vishnuvardhana in the 12th century to commemorate his victory over the Cholas. It took more than a century to complete. It is a breathtaking synthesis of Dravidian, Nagara, and Hoysala architectural styles. The exterior is adorned with intricate carvings depicting Hindu mythological gods, goddesses, celestial beings, animals, and scenes. The outer walls of the temple are renowned for their intricate sculptures, including the renowned Madanikas, which are renowned for their grace and beauty. Inside the main sanctum is a magnificent 2.1-meter-tall statue of Lord Chennakesava, an alternate form of Lord Vishnu, in a standing position. The interior of the temple is adorned with intricately carved columns, ceiling designs, and sculptures depicting mythological stories.
Next, we'll visit the Hoysaleswara Temple in Halebidu, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is a prime example of Hoysala architecture. The temple, which was constructed during the reign of King Vishnuvardhana in the 12th century, remains unfinished due to an invasion by the Delhi Sultanate in the 14th century.
Similarly to the Belur Temple, the exterior walls of the Hoysaleswara Temple are adorned with elaborate sculptures and intricate carvings depicting various Hindu deities, celestial beings, animals, and scenes from Hindu epics such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. One shrine is dedicated to Lord Hoysaleswara (Shiva), while the other is dedicated to Lord Shantaleswara (a form of Vishnu). Inside the sanctums are intricately carved lingams and deity statues. A large Nandi (bull) statue and a museum showcasing a collection of sculptures and artefacts are also located within the temple complex.
