Tour Overview

The stiletto heel of Italy’s boot, Puglia is a pastoral paradise of ancient olive groves, gleaming white-washed hill towns, and forested mountains. It’s home to the iconic ‘trulli’ huts, with their conical tiled roofs, as well as dazzling beaches and delicious, authentic food. And it’s food that’s the focus of this fabulous five-day getaway, which includes a tour and wine tasting at a local vineyard, a pasta-making class at a wheat farm, and a mozzarella-making workshop at a traditional masseria. You’ll also get a taste of the regional capital of Bari, with a street food tour led by our Local Insider, and sample liquid gold at an olive oil mill. All of our trips are flightless in destination, with 100% of all carbon emissions offset. It's just part of how we see the world while being good to it.

Highlights

  • Visit Puglia’s famous ‘trulli’ huts in Alberobello and Locorotondo

  • Learn how to make authentic Puglian pasta

  • Embark on a street food tour of Bari

  • Get hands-on at a mozzarella-making workshop

  • Sample freshly pressed olive oil at the source

  • Taste the region’s wines on a vineyard tour

After arriving at Bari airport (BRI), make your own way to your stunning hotel, La Chiusa di Chietri (or similar four-star), in the lush Itria Valley. Day 2 : Learn To Make Pasta The Puglian Way

Location: Alberobello

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: La Chiusa di Chietri

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

After breakfast at your hotel, you’ll be picked up and driven to the town of Alberobello, home to Puglia’s famous trulli huts. You’ll be met here by our Local Insider, who’ll lead you along flagstone-paved streets, lined with the whitewashed trulli buildings – many of which have been repurposed as boutique craft shops, delis and fairytale-pretty homes. From Alberobello, it’s onto the day’s main course – literally, with a pasta-making class at an authentic masseria. You’ll learn how to make the region’s signature shapes: orecchiette, cavatelli and strascinati, before tucking into a homemade lunch with wine. After lunch, it’s onto the whitewashed city of Ostuni, rising out of the landscape like a crumbly meringue. Here, our Local Insider will take you on a meandering tour of its artisanal shops, baroque churches and spectacular viewpoints. After the tour, you’ll return to your hotel for the evening.

Activities Included:
Local Insider-led tour of Alberobello
Puglian pasta-making class with lunch
Tour of Ostuni with a Local Insider

Day 3 : Tuck Into A Street Food Tour Of Bari

valezones

Location: Bari, Alberobello

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: La Chiusa di Chietri

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

You might want to take it easy at breakfast today, as this morning it’s all about Bari and its street food scene. After being shuttled to the city, you’ll meet up with our Local Insider, who’ll introduce you to the city’s signature snacks – from salty, oily, still-warm focaccia, to meaty salami and refreshing gelato. Still hungry? Take the free lunch break to sniff out anything you might have missed. From Bari, it’s onto pretty Putignano, famous for its biscuit-coloured baroque architecture and annual carnival, thought to be the oldest in Europe. You’ll have time for a wander around the atmospheric streets, before heading off for your final activity of the day: a mozzarella-making workshop at a rural masseria. It’s surprisingly hungry work, which is why you’ll be well fed with homemade panzerotti afterwards – a fried, calzone-like snack, and a Puglian speciality.

Activities Included:
Street food tour of Bari
Visit to Putignano
Mozzarella-making workshop

Day 4 : Olive Oil And Wine Tasting With Local Producers

Location: Cisternino, Locorotondo, Alberobello

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: La Chiusa di Chietri

Meals Included: Breakfast

Set your alarm an hour earlier this morning as, after breakfast, you’ll be whisked across the sunrise-gilded countryside to an olive oil mill in Cisternino. Here, you’ll not only get to see this ancient tradition in action (and how it has been modernised in recent times), but you’ll get to sample the peppery, freshly pressed olive oil – Puglia’s pride and joy. Wheels greased, next is a short hop south to the hilltop town of Locorotondo, which sits like a white crown on a green velvet cushion of vineyards and olive groves. Wander its medieval centre, a honeycomb of laundry-hung alleyways and plant-filled piazzas, with a spectacular church at its heart. Later you’ll head onto the Pastini winery, where a tour of the vineyard ends with a wine-tasting session in the cellar. The rest of the afternoon is yours to spend however you like – by the pool at your hotel, perhaps, with a glass of wine in hand?

Activities Included:
Olive oil mill visit and tasting
Local Insider-led tour of Locorotondo
Tour of Pastini winery with a tasting session

Day 5 : It’S Time To Say Arrivederci

valezones

Location: Alberobello

Meals Included: Breakfast

Today’s your last day, so after a final hotel breakfast, spend what’s left of the morning making the most of that Puglian sun. After check-out, make your way to Bari airport (BRI), where you’ll say so long to the gang before heading off on whatever adventure comes next.

Accommodation

La Chiusa di Chietri

In Puglia, it’s all about the slow and mellow moments – and that’s what this countryside hotel excels in. Surrounded by five acres of olive groves and aromatic Puglian scrub, it’s an oasis of rural calm – with a large outdoor pool in which to while away indigo-tinted evenings listening to the crickets. Level-up your wind-down with a session in the on-site Aura Sylva Spa, designed to replicate the ancient trulli that symbolise this part of the country.

Please note that, while unlikely, the accommodation indicated may be subject to change (see T&C’s). On a rare occasion, alternative arrangements may be necessary – this may be due to a lack of availability at our preferred accommodation, or other reasons outside our control. We’ll do everything we can to prevent this from happening; however, in cases where it is unavoidable, we will use a similar standard of accommodation.

Check out our Q&As

  • Do I need any vaccinations?

As a tour operator we are unable to give medical advice, however we suggest you contact your doctor, a professional medical travel clinic or check out the World Health Organisation website for more details.

  • What is not included in the trip?

We don’t include the following in our trips: insurance (however you must have insurance to travel on one of our trips), flights, tips for local guides, optional activities and other meals and services not mentioned in your itinerary.

  • How many meals are included?

Breakfast is included daily and then depending on your itinerary, some lunches and dinners. This is clearly indicated in the trip details or ask your Travel Expert to confirm.

  • When will I know if my trip is guaranteed?

We usually wait until we have a few travellers booked on a trip before we guarantee it will run. The latest we will guarantee a trip is 60 days ahead of departure, often it will be long before.

  • Do I need to tip?

Tips are not included in the price of your trip but are entirely optional and at your discretion.

  • How much money should I bring?

This will depend on how long your trip is, your destination and how much you intend to spend on personal expenses and any meals that aren’t included. It is a good idea to check out the cost of a local lunch and dinner in your destination before you travel.

  • Are airport transfers included?

Your arrival transfer from Bari Airport (BRI) to your hotel is not included. If you would like to add an arrival transfer onto your booking, you can contact our Travel Experts who will be able to assist. If you would prefer to make your own way to the hotel, there are a number of options available from Bari Airport. The hotel is located 65 kms (40 miles) from the airport and a journey by road will take approximately 1 hour. Alternatively, you can take the train from Bari Aeroporo Karol Wojtyla station changing at Bari Centrale and Putignano and this will take approx. 4 hours. If you would prefer a slightly shorter journey, you can take the train to Bari Centrale and then take the bus from Bari Largo Sorrentino to Alberobello. This journey takes approx. 2 hours. Your departure airport transfer from Alberobello back to Bari Airport (BRI) is not included. If you would like to add a departure transfer onto your booking, you can contact our Travel Experts who will be able to assist. • What is the group size?

Our maximum group size is 14, although our average group size is 10-12 people. Group travel is a great way to meet other people, and you will have the safety of travelling with a group, but you can also decide how much time you want to spend by yourself.

  • What happens if I am travelling on my own?

Most accommodations on our trips are reserved on a twin share basis. Therefore, if you are travelling on your own you will be sharing a room with another Culture Trip traveller of the same sex. However, most of the time it is possible to pay a supplement for your own room. Please ask your Travel Expert for more information.

  • What kind of transport do you use on your trips?

We use a mix of public and private transport on our trips, but usually a small and comfortable minibus, so we can access more remote destinations that larger groups can’t get to.

Yes you can. Our team of Travel Experts can put together a bespoke trip to suit all group sizes in most destinations around the world. Please contact us for more details.

  • How fit do I need to be to take one of your trips?

We offer a variety of different trips, most of which do not require a specific level of fitness. Some of our trips are more active, but we include details on each specific trip information page. If you are unsure please don’t hesitate to ask one of our Travel Experts.

  • What visas do I need?

Depending on your passport and your destination, you may need a visa to travel on one of our trips. It is up to you to ensure you have any and all necessary visas before you travel. We recommend you check with a specialist visa agency at least 6 weeks before you travel.

No - our travellers come from all over the world so flights and / or transport to the start destination are not included.

  • I booked but cannot travel anymore. What are the amendments and cancellation options?

We understand plans can change and that’s why we offer flexible booking conditions. You can change or cancel your booking at any time up to 56 days prior to departure and receive a full refund of any funds you have already paid towards your trip.

  • Do I have to make full payment at the time of booking?

You do not have to make full payment at the time of booking. We only require a small, fully refundable deposit of $100 to secure your spot on the trip. Full payment is due at the latest 56 days prior to departure.

  • Do I have to take part in all the activities? Will there be free time on my trip?

The amount of free time varies per trip. Please enquire with our travel experts to get a proper understanding on the amount of free time on the trips you are interested in. You do not have to take part in all activities but we strongly encourage you to do so! We have carefully crafted each trip to show you the best of every destination, so you’d be missing out! Also taking part in activities is a great way to get to know your travel companions and make new friends. Nothing like a positive and supportive group environment to venture outside of your comfort zone and surprise yourself!

  • What is a Local Insider?

We believe there’s no better way to discover a new place and a new culture than by experiencing it through the eyes and experience of a local. That’s why we only work with local guides - whom we name our Local Insiders. They know their region inside out and have a passion for sharing it with travellers. All our Local Insiders have years of experience guiding and speak English. Importantly, they like to travel the way we like it too: away from crowds, tourist traps and queues. Focussing on the true essence of a destination, teaching you all about the local culture and profusely sharing local hidden gems and insights.

A wonderful foodie experience, well organized

18-Oct-2023

This was a great tour, and as described in the itinerary, it provided a variety of great foodie experiences. The tour was incredibly well organized by Culture Trip, and well led by our guide Assunta. She was fantastic and just a pleasure to travel with. All the more amazing in that this was the first time that Culture Trip had this tour. One recommendation, preference that I would like to see is having two outings (not 1) of a cooking lesson.
