Day 1 : Sip Cocktails On Your First Day In Palermo

Location: Palermo

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Hotel Porta Felice

Meals Included: Dinner

After your flight lands at Falcone-Borsellino Airport, make your way to the hotel where our Local Insider – who will accompany you for the rest of the trip – will greet you and the rest of the group at 6pm. Enjoy welcome drinks; if you haven't already, you might want to try an Aperol spritz. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions about the trip over dinner at a local restaurant, and perhaps enjoy a couple more spritzes before heading to bed.

Activities included:

Welcome dinner

Day 2 : Delve Into Palermo's Fascinating Past

Location: Palermo

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Hotel Porta Felice

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Begin your tour of Sicily by delving into Palermo’s past. Its history stretches back more than 2,700 years to the Phoenicians; since then, the Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Normans have all put their stamp on the city. You can get around on foot, strolling through squares and sampling street food as you discover more about the history, art and traditions of the city. After lunch, explore the gold-sand beaches around Palermo, before meeting your group for a cookery class. Under the watchful eye of a knowledgeable chef, you’ll prepare authentic Sicilian dishes that you can recreate when you get home.

Activities included:

Palermo walking tour
Sicilian cooking class

Day 3 : Hike In The Madonie Mountains And Marvel At The Beauty Of Cefalù

Location: Cefalù, Madonie

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Artemis Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

Trade the city streets of Palermo for the rugged scenery of the Madonie mountains on a winding road inland. You’ll stop off en route to walk along a Roman trail lined with centuries-old oak and maple trees that was originally used by traders to transport goods to the coast. If you’re lucky, you might spot a golden eagle. After a traditional lunch, continue to the coastal city of Cefalù, where you’ll check into your hotel. Don’t miss the Norman cathedral and the palace of Osterio Magno in Cefalù, before cooling off in the Mediterranean Sea.

Activities included:

Guided Madonie mountains hike

Day 4 : Pack Your Bags For The Aeolian Islands

Location: Lipari

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Hotel Bougainville

Meals Included: Breakfast

Today, hop on the hydrofoil ferry to the Aeolian islands, a group of 12 tiny land masses off the north coast of Sicily. You’ll stay on the largest, Lipari, where a row of pastel-coloured buildings frame the harbour. Eye up a nice spot for lunch before dropping your bags at the hotel. The rest of the day is yours to explore at your own pace – wander around the ruined castle and cathedral, take a taxi to the thermal springs of San Calogero or unwind at the hotel where the outdoor pool beckons.

Day 5 : Visit The Islands Of Panarea And Stromboli

Location: Lipari

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Hotel Bougainville

Meals Included: Breakfast

This morning, you’ll board the hydrofoil again to Panarea. Keep your eyes peeled for celebrities – Michael Douglas, Oprah Winfrey and Beyoncé have all holidayed on this exclusive island, keen for a taste of dolce far niente – delicious idleness. Stroll through labyrinthine streets, where pink bougainvillea blooms spill over whitewashed walls. Later, you'll sail to neighbouring Stromboli; the biggest draw on this island is the volcano, which has been active for 2,000 years. It's one of the most reliable places to see lava spewing from the core of the earth. Catch a last glimpse from the hydrofoil before you return to Lipari.

Activities included:

Stromboli and Panarea boat tour

Day 6 : Explore The Sulphurous Island Vulcano And Soak In Hot Springs

Location: Lipari

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Hotel Bougainville

Meals Included: Breakfast

Today is yours to explore Lipari at leisure – from the beaches overlooking azure water to centuries-old duomos and cute tavernas. Come lunchtime, why not wash down a bowl of pasta 'ncasciata with a glass of limoncello, and cool off afterwards with a dip in the Med? If you still have energy, there’s an optional choice to visit the island of Vulcano, where you can hike to the rim of a volcanic crater before visiting the geothermal baths. Slather yourself in hot, mineral-rich mud, then wash it off in the hot spring, where jets of steam from underground fumaroles provide a gentle massage.

Optional activities:

Vulcano tour

Day 7 : Go Off-Road On Mount Etna

Location: Mount Etna, Syracuse

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Grand Hotel Villa Politi

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

The hydrofoil will bring you back to the Sicilian mainland today, arriving in Milazzo. From here, you’ll continue to the main event of the day: a thrilling 4x4 tour across Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano in Europe. Bounce over crusted lava fields, exploring Monti Silvestri, the Northeast Crater, the Voragine and more. After a light lunch at a local agriturismo, continue to your hotel in Syracuse. Spend the evening as you wish – kick back at the hotel or watch the sunset from nearby Castello Maniace.

Activities included:

Mount Etna 4x4 tour

Day 8 : Discover The Baroque Hill Towns Of Noto, Ragusa And Modica

Location: Syracuse, Noto, Ragusa, Modica

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Grand Hotel Villa Politi

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

Say goodbye to the coast and venture inland to the hillside villages of Noto, Ragusa and Modica. Few visitors make it here, so it’s a great opportunity to get off the beaten path. Rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 1693, the villages form part of the Val di Noto Unesco World Heritage site, designated for its beautiful architecture. Countless churches and palaces were built from the local stone; their ornate detailing draws admiring looks to this day. Fans of Inspector Montalbano may recognise Ragusa and Modica as the filming locations. Make sure you grab a gelato in Noto – one of the best places for ice cream in the world.

Activities included:

Ragusa, Noto and Modica tour

Day 9 : Explore The Flavours Of Syracuse

Location: Syracuse

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Grand Hotel Villa Politi

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Today’s tour of Syracuse promises to be a multisensory experience. Heaps of pistachios, almonds, sun-dried tomatoes, capers and blood-red oranges create a riot of colour in the lively Mercato di Ortigia. Throw in lots of shouting and gesticulating, not to mention the aromas of fresh bakes and herbs, and you can see why the market is as much a visitor attraction as it is a local shopping experience. All the produce on sale will offer a fascinating – and no doubt stomach-rumbling – insight into the rich food culture and history of Syracuse. Afterwards, you can while away a few hours in the old town before regrouping for a farewell dinner.

Activities included:

Ortigia walking tour
Market tour with tastings

Day 10 : Departure Day

Location: Syracuse

Meals Included: Breakfast

Sadly, all good things must come to an end. You'll say a fond farewell to your new friends at around 11am, before returning home or continuing with your travels.

  • When will I know if my trip is guaranteed?

We usually wait until we have a few travellers booked on a trip before we guarantee it will run. The latest we will guarantee a trip is 60 days ahead of departure, often it will be long before.

  • Is there any age limit on the Trips?

You must be 25 or over to travel on our trips, however there is no upper age limit. You just need a sense of adventure.

  • How fit do I need to be to take one of your trips?

We offer a variety of different trips, most of which do not require a specific level of fitness. Some of our trips are more active, but we include details on each specific trip information page. If you are unsure please don’t hesitate to ask one of our Travel Experts.

  • What kind of transport do you use on your trips?

We use a mix of public and private transport on our trips, but usually a small and comfortable minibus, so we can access more remote destinations that larger groups can’t get to.

  • Do I need to tip?

Tips are not included in the price of your trip but are entirely optional and at your discretion.

  • What is the group size?

Our maximum group size is 18, although our average group size is 10-12 people. Group travel is a great way to meet other people, and you will have the safety of travelling with a group, but you can also decide how much time you want to spend by yourself.

No - our travellers come from all over the world so flights and / or transport to the start destination are not included.

  • How much money should I bring?

This will depend on how long your trip is, your destination and how much you intend to spend on personal expenses and any meals that aren’t included. It is a good idea to check out the cost of a local lunch and dinner in your destination before you travel.

  • Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Yes - all travellers must have travel insurance before they join one of our trips. You are strongly advised to take out your policy at the time of booking to protect your holiday payments in the event of cancellation.

You can change the date of your tour up to 60 days prior to departure and cancel at any time, although cancellation conditions may apply.

  • What visas do I need?

Breakfast is included daily and then depending on your itinerary, some lunches and dinners. This is clearly indicated in the trip details or ask your Travel Expert to confirm.

  • What happens if I am travelling on my own?

Most accommodations on our trips are reserved on a twin share basis. Therefore, if you are travelling on your own you will be sharing a room with another Culture Trip traveller of the same sex. However, most of the time it is possible to pay a supplement for your own room. Please ask your Travel Expert for more information.

Yes, call or email one of our Travel Experts who will be able to add accommodation to your booking.

  • What kind of luggage should I bring?

It depends on the type of trip you have booked, but we usually recommend a soft sided bag or case as they are easier to handle on a trip.

  • Can I travel in my own private group?

Yes you can. Our team of Travel Experts can put together a bespoke trip to suit all group sizes in most destinations around the world. Please contact us for more details.

  • I booked but cannot travel anymore. What are the amendments and cancellation options?

  • Do I have to take part in all the activities? Will there be free time on my trip?

The amount of free time varies per trip. Please enquire with our travel experts to get a proper understanding on the amount of free time on the trips you are interested in. You do not have to take part in all activities but we strongly encourage you to do so! We have carefully crafted each trip to show you the best of every destination, so you’d be missing out! Also taking part in activities is a great way to get to know your travel companions and make new friends. Nothing like a positive and supportive group environment to venture outside of your comfort zone and surprise yourself!

  • What is a Local Insider?

We believe there’s no better way to discover a new place and a new culture than by experiencing it through the eyes and experience of a local. That’s why we only work with local guides - whom we name our Local Insiders. They know their region inside out and have a passion for sharing it with travellers. All our Local Insiders have years of experience guiding and speak English. Importantly, they like to travel the way we like it too: away from crowds, tourist traps and queues. Focussing on the true essence of a destination, teaching you all about the local culture and profusely sharing local hidden gems and insights.

My experience with Culture Trips was outstanding!

03-Feb-2022

My experience with Culture Trips was outstanding! I went on the trip to Iceland in 2021, my very first international trip, and it was absolutely incredible! I felt like it exceeded beyond all expectations. Culture Trips made the whole process of signing up for the trip very easy and understandable, and I always had great customer service whenever I reached out with a question. With the help of Culture Trips and our local insider, I felt like our travel group was well taken care of during the entire experience. Our itinerary was pack full of adventure and we learned so much about the Icelandic culture and nature by our incredible local insider guide. A truly unforgettable experience! My trip to Egypt with Culture Trip was one of the best trips I've ever done!

25-Nov-2022

My trip to Egypt with Culture Trip was one of the best trips I've ever done! The accommodations, the activities, and especially the "local insider" guide were superb. Traveling in a small group (5 total on the tour) was so nice, I felt a bit sorry for other tourists being herded around in a big group on a big bus. We went on activities that you just couldn't do with a big group. Our local guide was more like a friend we all knew who lived there and was showing us his favorite places!
