Tour Overview

The Great Living Chola Temples bears the testimony to the fascinating achievements of the "Chola dynasty" in architecture, sculpture, painting and bronze casting. The fabulous site includes three great 11th- and 12th-century Temples: the Brihadisvara Temple at Thanjavur, the Brihadisvara Temple at Gangaikondacholisvaram and the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram. The Temple of Gangaikondacholisvaram, built by Rajendra I, was completed in 1035. Its 53-m vimana (sanctum tower) has recessed corners and a graceful upward curving movement, contrasting with the straight and severe tower at Thanjavur. The Airavatesvara temple complex, built by Rajaraja II, at Darasuram features a 24-m vimana and a stone image of Shiva. Also visit Nataraj temple at Chidambaram, One of the largest Siva temples with well-maintained corridors with mammoth structures and carvings. We pickup you from your hotel in Trichy in the morning and drive to Tanjore . Those who wish to do something in Trichy first,then we shall take to world famous "Rangnathswamy temple" first before we go to Tanjore. Arrive Tanjore and visit visit Brihadishvara (or Brhadisvara) temple was constructed between c. 995 and 1025 CE using Chola war booty and tribute from Sri Lanka. The temple was dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Reaching a height of 63 metres, it is the tallest temple building in India. Overnight at the hotel in Thanjavur.

The Airavatesvara temple complex at Darasuram, was built by Rajaraja II, features a 24-m vimana and a stone image of Shiva. 1 hour • Admission Ticket Free 2 Gangaikonda Cholapuram From Darasuram, further drive of 45 kilometers to visit temple "Gangaikondacholapuram".The Temple of Gangaikondacholisvaram, built by Rajendra I, was completed in 1035. Its 53-m vimana (sanctum tower) has recessed corners and a graceful upward curving movement, contrasting with the straight and severe tower at Thanjavur. Further drive of 49 kilometers only to reach Chidambaram for an overnight stay.

Breakfast at the hotel, later visit Famous Nataraj temple, The architecture of the temple represents the link between arts and spirituality. The temple was constructed during the 10th Century when Chidambaram used to be the capital of the Chola dynasty. The most unique characteristic of the Nataraj Temple is the bejewelled image of Nataraj. The temple has five main Halls or Sabhas namely the Kanaka Sabha, the Cit Sabha, Nritta Sabha, Deva Sabha and Raja Sabha. Nataraj happens to be one of the most momentous forms of Lord Shiva. Chidambaram is also amongst one of the most celebrated shrines of Lord Shiva in the country. Later drive back to Trichy airport to board your flight for onward journey.

What SIngh jo does not...

What SIngh jo does not know about Old Delhi is probably not worth knowing. He is a walking history book and has detailed knowledge of the sites and monuments which he shares with joy and great enthusiasm. I highly recommend his walking tours which include rickshaw rides - and a penetrating flash of sight into Indian culture.

Mr Jai Singh was the most professional and communicative tour operator that I have encountered to date. Not only was his knowledge exceptional on the possible options on hotels and activities, but he assisted us in successfully recovering our money when the Indian government unfortunately changed the visa requirements at the last minute resulting in having to cancel our visit. I enjoyed a really interesting and reasonably priced private tour of Mehrauli Archaeological Park and Tughlaqabad Fort with Jai. It’s hard to find guides for these places but Jai did a great job of organising and running the tour.
