Tour Overview

This 9-day Egypt tour features all the main Pharaonic highlights in Cairo and the Nile Valley as well as including a luxury Nile river cruise and some time by the Red Sea at Hurghada. We start in Cairo with tours of the Pyramids and Sphinx at Gisa, and the world famous Egyptian Museum which has a huge collection of ancient artefacts including of course, the King Tutankhamun display. Next, we take an internal flight south to Aswan, where the Nile is at its most picturesque. We'll explore a local Nubian village and take a boat trip to the beautiful island temple of Philae. You also have the option to visit the amazing temples to Abu Simbel which were dismantled and rebuilt when Lake Nasser was flooded. We leave Aswan on one of Nile's famous luxury cruise boats. You'll enjoy a comfortable en-suite cabin with panoramic windows, a restaurant, lounge and bar, and a large sun deck with another bar, recliners and a plunge pool. The cruise takes us north via the temples at Edfu and Komombo to Luxor, considered by many as the world's finest and largest outdoor museum. There are a huge number of ancient sites to see here, and we'll tour both the east and west banks of the Nile. Sites visited include underground Pharaonic tombs in the Valley of the Kings, Queen Hatchepsut and Medinat Habu temples, and the immense Collosi of Memnon. We also tour the huge temple complex at Karnak and see Luxor temple beautifully lit up at night. We leave the Nile Valley now and head to the Red Sea coast at Hurghada for some welcome rest and relaxation in a 4-star beach resort. The snorkelling and scuba diving in Hurghada is excellent and there are many other watersports available too, or you can just relax by the beach. If you wish you can extend your time here, or return on the flight back to Cairo with the rest of the group. The tour ends with a walking tour through the back streets of the Khan-el-Khalili bazaar and time in the evening at the Wikalat al Guri sufi music and dancing display.

  • The Pyramids & Sphinx.

  • Colossi of Memnon, Red Sea at Hurghada

Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrive In Cairo, Transfer To Hotel

Location: Cairo

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Cairo 5-star hotel

Meals Included: No Meals

Upon arrival at Cairo airport, we will meet you and assist you with visa formalities and luggage collection, then transfer you to your hotel. Our rep will help you settle in, then the rest of the day is free at your leisure. If your flight lands early, then you could take a first look at the pyramids with an amazing sound and light show, or perhaps head into downtown Cairo for a Nile dinner cruise and show.

Day 2 : Cairo, Pyramids, Sphinx & Museum Tour

Location: Cairo

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Aswan 5-star hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

Your Gods of Egypt tour begins with a visit to the enigmatic Sphinx and the three greatest pyramids in Egypt. At 500 feet high and 750 feet wide at its base the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops) is a breath taking man-made structure, built from enormous stone blocks with a white limestone covering. Over the years, the limestone covering has been stripped away to expose the inner block structure. Along with the smaller pyramids of Khafre (Chephern) and Menkaure (Mycerinus), the inspiring sight of these huge structures looming out of the desert is an unforgettable site. You will have a chance to climb inside the pyramids if you wish, but you're on your own, as your guide cannot accompany you (a limited number of tickets are available for the Great Pyramid). After the Pyramids we then head into downtown Cairo to explore the sprawling Egyptian Museum. The museum is home to the famous Tutankhamun exhibit and a huge number of other ancient Egyptian artefacts. One of our experienced local Egyptologist guides will be with you on this tour, and all of your other sightseeing tours. You'll discover our amazing guides have a wealth of knowledge and full are of enthusiasm about Egyptian history, and their country in general. In the evening we transfer to the airport for a domestic flight to Aswan, where we are met and transferred to our hotel overlooking the Nile.

Day 3 : Abu Simbel Option, Board Nile Cruise, Aswan Tours

Location: Abu Simbel

Accommodation Name: Nile Cruise Boat

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We awake this morning to see one of the most beautiful stretches of the Nile in Egypt in front of us. The river here is dotted with islands and felucca sailing boats and Aswan itself is an intriguing mixture of African and Middle Eastern cultures which can be easily seen by strolling through the bustling markets. You have some free time this morning to explore, walk along the Corniche on the banks of the river, or take a trip to the Nubian Museum, which has a collection of artefacts from the Nubian people. We check out of our hotel and onto our Nile Cruise boat for lunch before our organised sightseeing in Aswan starts in the afternoon with a tour to the Temple of Philae. This beautiful island temple is dedicated to Isis and was saved from the rising waters of Lake Nasser. It can only be reached by a scenic boat ride. The rest of the day is free though an option is also available to take a camel ride through the sands on the far bank of the Nile to St. Simeon's monastery.

There is also an early morning optional visit to the UNESCO world heritage site of Abu Simbel, built by Ramses II. This is an amazing site that was completely dismantled and rebuilt when Lake Nasser was flooded.

Day 4 : Nile Cruise To Komombo & Edfu

Location: Kom Umbu

Accommodation Name: Nile Cruise Boat

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We spend the day today sailing down the Nile, enjoying our time relaxing on the sun deck and and watching rural Egyptian life pass us by. Our first stop is at the beautifully situated riverside temple at Komombo. This somewhat unusually styled temple is in fact a double temple, with one side being consecrated to Sobek, the crocobile good and the second dedicated to Horus - the falcon-headed Sky God. We then continue sailing on to the Temple of Horus at Edfu. We overnight here.

Day 5 : Edfu Temple, Luxor Temple At Night

Location: Edfu

Accommodation Name: Nile Cruise Boat

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning we explore the Temple of Horus, the best preserved temple in the whole of Egypt, it has many inscriptions in the Coptic language and is adorned with paintings. We then sail onwards, passing through the lock on the Nile at Esna, before arriving in Luxor. Luxor is built on and around the ancient site of Thebes, and has the greatest concentration of ancient ruins in the Nile Valley, if not the world. To the west, across the Nile, lies the City of the Dead, with its mortuary temples and rock carved tombs, and to the east stand the Temples of Luxor and Karnak.

In the evening we'll take a walking tour of the smaller Luxor Temple, which is in the centre of town and is colourfully lit up by night.

Day 6 : Luxor, West Bank Tour, Karnak Temple

Location: Luxor

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Luxor 5-star hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

We cross the Nile early this morning to begin our tour of Luxor’s West Bank. Home to the Valley of the Kings, the dusty tombs in this ancient burial site are still revealing their secrets today and so it remains one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. Our tour includes several of these Pharaonic tombs, as well as the temples of Queen Hatchepsut and Medinat Habu, and the huge Colossi of Memnon.

A spectacular hot air balloon flight over the west bank of the Nile is available this morning (expect an early start to catch sunrise as the balloon rises).

After lunch we'll tour the huge temple complex at Karnak , once the religious centre of Thebes and Upper Egypt. It was linked to Luxor by an extensive avenue, lined with sphinxes, and the whole complex was in turn linked to the Nile via a canal through which moved the sacred boats of the god Amun. Entering through a smaller sphinx-lined avenue, built by Ramesses II, you come to the immense pylon entrance. Inside the huge Courtyard are three chapels dedicated to the gods Amun, Khous and Mut. The remarkable Hypostyle Hall has 134 towering columns, each carved with scenes of gods and pharaohs, and hieroglyphic inscriptions adorn the walls.

Day 7 : Luxor To The Red Sea At Hurghada

Location: Luxor

Accommodation: Resort

Accommodation Name: Hurghada - 5-star resort

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

After a lazy morning we leave the Nile Valley and drive to the Red Sea resort of Hurghada where we check into a 5-star resort. Your stay here is on a 'soft all inclusive' basis, with all meals, soft drinks and snacks included but not alcoholic beverages.

Day 8 : Red Sea At Hurghada, Free Day

Location: Hurghada

Accommodation: Resort

Accommodation Name: Hurghada 5-star resort

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Your day is free today to relax and enjoy your time by the Red Sea. Hurghada is world famous for its scuba diving and snorkelling and the rich Red Sea marine life here attracts divers from all over the world. Other adventurous activities available include wind surfing and kite surfing, glass bottomed submarines, quad biking, camel rides and sea fishing trips. Our local rep based in Hurghada will be on hand to help make any arrangements. Hurghada itself has an interesting marina and old town to explore.

If you wish, we can book extra nights in the resort in Hurghada for you to extend your time here - please contact us for details and prices.

Note: Please note that when adding extra nights in Hurghada you will leave the group here and miss the remaining activities in Cairo. You can either finish the tour in Hurghada or fly back to Cairo to finish there. Please contact us for more information and customised pricing.

Day 9 : Drive To Cairo, Old Cairo & Khan-El-Khalili Bazzar Tour

Location: Khan el-Khalili

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Cairo 5-star hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

We drive back to Cairo this morning (approx.. 5hrs) and check into a city centre hotel. An upgrade to an internal flight is also available on request. In the late afternoon we take a guided walk through the back streets and bazaars in Old Cairo. We'll walk through the huge Bab al-Futuh gateway and explore streets dedicated to metalwork, spices, pottery, fabric, jewelery and anything else you can imagine as we gradually enter the more touristy Khan-el-Khalili bazaar. We'll have time for a break to try some mint tea and a shisha pipe and this is a great final opportunity to pick up some souvenirs of your time in Egypt.

Day 10 : Cairo, Free Time, Departure Airport Transfer

Location: Cairo

Meals Included: Breakfast

Your time is free today for some last minute sightseeing or shopping until we transfer you to the airport for your departure flight. If you have an afternoon or evening flight departure, then a half-day tour of Coptic Cairo and the Citadel is available today, or you could take another half-day tour to learn more about the evolution of pyramid building at Saqqara, Dashour & Memphis. tours are also available today. Alternatively you can add extra nights to your time in Cairo which would allow you to take a day trip to the colonial city of Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast, or a trip into the desert outside Cairo to see the World Heritage Site of the Valley of the Whales at Wadi Rayan.

Gods of Egypt - Wonderful Tour, Will Book Again with Encounters

Aug 2021

We wholeheartedly recommend Encounters Tours and the Gods of Egypt Tour! Egypt has been on our wishlist for a very long time, but traveling during Covid made us nervous. We needn't have worried. There are very few tourists headed to Egypt (at a couple temples we were the only party), and Encounters took care of or prepared us for every detail from the moment we landed until we left with our PCR test results in hand. And, as Richard mentions, our primary guide, Sherif, took marvelous care of us and made the tour truly remarkable. Sherif has a PhD in archaeology and Egyptology, and he’s even had his own TV shows. But in addition to being truly informative and helpful, Sherif is also incredibly funny! He kept it lively, interesting and memorable, even though our heads were spinning with content. Sherif took us through Cairo, down the Nile, and to Luxor, Valley of the Kings, Karnak/Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel, and other locations, plus Alexandria, Saqqara, Dashur and Memphis at the end of our trip. Sherif made it look so easy, we tried it on our own a couple nights and … it wasn’t at all easy, nor nearly as informative, and a whole lot less funny. LOL. We owe thanks to Mariska, who helped us book last minute, to Saul for the coordination and taking us, on our final night, to downtown Cairo, to Mohammad for tours near the Red Sea, including an indelible Bedouin village tour. But our biggest thanks to Sherif for making sure our trip was informative, so much fun, safe and flawless. Read less

Gods of Egypt

Aug 2021

We did the 10 day Gods of Egypt tour and it was of the best vacations I've had. Our tour guide Sharif was knowledgeable and very social. Sharif never missed a heartbeat and went our of his way to take care of our needs. The other guides were also fantastic, but Sharif made this trip remarkable.

Gods of Egypt Tour

Nov 2019

Egypt was AMAZING!! I didn't want to come home. We arrived a couple of days early to do some of the additional tours. Alexandria was a beautiful day tour. I highly recommend it! We also did Memphis, Dahshur, and Saqqara. This was also fun, but much more active. Be prepared to workout. Our first guide, Islam, was enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and a lot of fun! If he didn't know the answer to a question, he would find out for us. We liked him so much that we requested him on our return to Cairo the following weekend. He made sure we were having the best experience we could have by asking us questions and getting to know our likes and dislikes. On the day we were originally going to visit the Great Pyramid, it was foggy in the morning. He switched around our two tours for the day so we could get clear pictures in the afternoon - so thoughtful. When we flew south, we had Tamer as our guide who gave us the opportunity to see Egypt through his eyes. He is an impressive story teller and made the carvings on the temple walls come to life. Tamer was very attentive to our group and often became our personal photographer. He gave us a short briefing before each tour so we always knew what to expect at each location. He would also explain Egyptian culture, giving us a taste of the world around us. We left feeling like family. I can confidently say that this was not a once-in-a-lifetime trip - I wholeheartedly plan on going back.

Gods of Egypt

Mar 2019

We just returned from the 9 day Gods of Egypt tour and it exceeded our expectations. Everything was (almost) perfectly organized, from pick up at the airport to drop off on our last day. The tour guides were very knowledgeable, especially Emad who was our tour guide from Aswan to Luxor. They were willing to answer any question you had about Egypt, and I felt they were really interested in providing a good understanding of Egyptian history and culture. I recommend doing the Nile cruise. All accommodations were good, definitely not 5 star hotels, but they were clean and comfortable. The tour is focused on seeing as much as possible. That means that meals may not happen at normal meal times so I would recommend having some snacks with you. There were also a few very early mornings (up and out by 5 am) for visiting Abu Simbel and the hot air balloon. One negative was an unnecessarily early flight (had to leave the hotel at 3 am) from Hurghada to Cairo, but understand that not every detail can be worked out perfectly. Also the papyrus museum and especially the oil factory they took us to charged tourist prices. Overall we had a great experience, felt safe and well cared for the whole time, and would recommend this tour.

Gods of Egypt tour - Excellent

May 2019

Just finished the Gods of Egypt 9-day tour, travelling with my mum. This tour was fast-paced and covered pretty much everything we wanted to see in Egypt. I would highly recommend it to anyone thinking of travelling to Egypt - the Encounters team were excellent and everything was extremely smooth from start to finish. Our Egyptologist guides (Hossam and Mohammed) were very knowledgeable and always happy to answer questions and accommodate requests. We were accompanied by a guide or rep at all times, including airport pickups and even on the cruise, so we always felt safe, had no communication issues, and received very little hassling from street sellers. The hotels booked for us were excellent - each had a great location and was very luxurious and comfortable. For anyone looking for a comfortable way to enjoy the Nile I would very highly recommend the Nile cruise upgrade - our cruise boat was lovely, all rooms have river views and the food was excellent. The top deck has a pool and sun loungers which is perfect to enjoy watching the world go by as you sail. Additionally I would definitely recommend flying over taking the train, based on reviews from fellow travellers who took the train. We travelled in early May and found the weather to be uncomfortably hot (low 40s), though our guides did their best to help us cope - would definitely recommend travelling in spring or autumn when temperatures are more manageable. All in all I thought Encounters were excellent and very good value, and would highly recommend them - and especially the Gods of Egypt tour which covered all the main sights in comfort.
