Tour Overview

Poland has come and gone from the map of Europe many times over the centuries, the battle line between East and West. Today it is a beautiful country full of history and a proud people, keen to show off their country's individuality and culture. Our journey starts in Warsaw the mighty capital, then it's north to the port city of Gdansk where the Solidarity trade union movement began, whose opposition to Communism led to the end of Communist Party rule in 1989. From here we move onto lesser known Wroclaw, the 2016 European Capital of Culture. Finishing in Krakow, Poland's cultural capital, with its beautiful old town square, cobbled streets and jazz bars. From here we have a day trip to Zakopane in the Tatra Mountains. This is a busy trip with lots to discover, far beyond Poland’s stereotypes of communist housing blocks and stodgy food.

Highlights

* Guided tour of Warsaw and Krakow old town * Discover lesser known Wroclaw * Visit UNESCO listed Auschwitz and Wilanow Palace * Enjoy local Polish hospitality  * Optional day tour of Wieliczka Salt Mine (must be booked in advance)

Itinerary

Day 1
The group flight arrives into Warsaw late morning. There is free time to explore the Polish capital. We recommend the Warsaw Uprising Museum, as there is no time to visit the following day. It is considered one of the best museums in the city. Meet the group in the early evening for our briefing. *Hotel Metropol or similar*

Day 2
Warsaw is the sprawling capital of Poland and the country's largest city. Its widely varied architecture reflects the city's long, turbulent history, from Gothic churches and neoclassical palaces to Soviet-era blocks and modern skyscrapers. Our guided walking tour starts in the UNESCO listed Old Town, lovingly restored after World War II, and Wilanów Palace, dating back to 1805 and once home to John II Sobieski, one of Poland’s most famous kings. After an early lunch, we take the 4hr transfer to Gdansk, Poland’s great maritime city. There may be some free time for a stroll along the quayside before dinner.* * *Number One Hotel or similar*

Day 3
Gdansk is surely one of Europe’s most famous port cities, and was a leading centre of commerce during the times of the Hanseatic League, in the 14th and 15th century. In the 20th century, it vast docks saw the founding of the Solidarity Movement, which played a major role in bringing an end to Communist rule in Poland and helped precipitate the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Our tour will take in the Old Town and the wonderfully restored docks, before free time to enjoy the city. You may choose to visit the award-winning Solidarity Museum or maybe just relax with a coffee in one of the many cafes. We then transfer to Torun, stopping at the UNESCO listed Malbork Castle, the largest castle compound in the world, dating back to the 13th century.* * *Gotyk Hotel or similar*

Day 4
This morning we have a walking tour of Torun. This is amongst Poland's oldest cities and the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus, one of history’s most famous astronomers. The city is known for having preserved, almost intact, its mediaeval spatial layout with many Gothic buildings, including monumental churches, the town hall and many burgher houses. After lunch we transfer to Wroclaw, approximately a four-hour drive through the Polish countryside. We will arrive in time to check in and head out for dinner on the old town square. *Campanile Centrum Hotel or similar*

Day 5
Wroclaw (vrots-wahf), is one of Poland's finest cities, with a unique mix of Bohemian, Austrian and Prussian traditions, culture and architecture. We will have a walking tour of the Market Square, old town and the city's Gothic cathedral, dating back to 1272. After a late lunch, we leave for Krakow, stopping at the Auschwitz concentration camp on the way. We will have a guided tour of both camps and the museum buildings. Reflecting on our visit we transfer to Krakow, Poland’s cultural capital. Our journey time to Krakow is approximately 4 hours in total.  *Chopin Hotel or similar*

Day 6
Krakow may be Poland's second largest city, but for many centuries it has been the academic, cultural and artistic capital of the nation. The mediaeval Old Town is UNESCO listed and dates back to the 13th century. It is now home to the largest market square in Europe as well as numerous merchant houses, St Mary's Basilica and Wawel Castle complex. All sites are within easy walk distance of the main square. After an orientation tour in the morning, the day is free for you to enjoy this beautiful city. Alternatively, you may choose to visit the Wieliczka Salt Mine, a 30-minute drive from the centre of the city. Established in the 13th century, salt was mined here until 2007. The mine's attractions include dozens of statues and four chapels carved out of the rock salt by the miners. The older sculptures have been supplemented with new carvings made by contemporary artists. Those who chose to visit the mine will return to Krakow in time for dinner with the group.  *Please note:* The salt mine tour is not exclusively for Exodus clients and therefore you might be joined by non-Exodus clients. Prices can be found in the ‘money’ sections of the trip notes. If you wish to go on this excursion please make the leader aware at the welcome briefing on day 1.  *Chopin Hotel or similar*

Day 7
Today we take an excursion to Zakopane situated in the foothills of the Tatra Mountains. This pretty resort town is famed for its wooden chalets and is popular in summer with hikers. We will take the cable car up Kasprowy Wierch and take a short walk on the mountain. There will be time for a relaxing lunch and souvenir shopping, the region is particularly well known for wood carvings and oscypk - a tasty smoked cheese. We will return to Krakow in time for dinner. You may also want to check out one of the world-famous jazz bars in one of the city's many cellar pubs. *Chopin Hotel or similar*

Day 8
Free day in Krakow before our evening flight back to London **

Had an exceptional holiday with...

Had an exceptional holiday with Exodus during which we travelled extensively around Sri Lanka and got a real taste of the country and the people who live there. The itinerary was packed with interesting trips and activities and all of the hotels were very comfortable. We had an excellent local guide who looked after our group brilliantly and became a friend by the end of the tour. This was not the cheapest tour we looked at but we don't regret a penny spent on it because of the quality and attention to detail. Would thoroughly recommend Exodus!

Very helpful and prompt service

06-Jan-2023

Very helpful and prompt service. I called to check for an already booked trip and once we sorted this, the agent was ready to help me with another booking as well. He actually waited for me to book my flight tickets, answered all my questions, informed me of all my options. Exodus is a tour company I am using regularly due to the quality of their trips, ease of booking and helpfulness of their customer service team

Stunning walking. Walking the Amalfi Coast

04-Nov-2021

This trip takes you through the most beautiful parts of the Mediterranean walking with a guide and also discovering the wonders of Pompeii and Vesuvius. The hotel had a nice feel as family run, spotless and comfortable rooms, we were well looked after for breakfasts and dinner each day, and the barmen fixed some mean cocktails for us.!

It's amazing what you can do in a week! Cycling the Dalmatian Coast.

08-Oct-2021

This holiday was extremely enjoyable. The itinerary is well planned and the route takes you to a variety of destinations. Not having been to Croatia before I didn't know there were so many beautiful small islands and I loved the ferry and catarmaran rides. The coastal route we took was dramatic and the World Heritage sites in Split and Dubrovnik very interesting and worth visiting. The Adriatic Sea was warm, blue and inviting, good for swimming even in October. The hotels we stayed in varied in size from medium to large. I particularly liked the one just outside Dubrovnik as I had a sea view. Tourists were plentiful in Split and Dubrovnik but in the other places we stayed there was an end of season feel and it was quiet on the roads and in the resorts. The food was good and our guide was always able to recommend a nice restaurant for our evening meal. The weather in October was good for cycling - not hot, partly cloudy most days and one day it rained!

We have just returned from...

12-Feb-2025

We have just returned from a 2 week Exodus trip to Egypt, Alexandria to Aswan. We had a great time, enjoyable company, with an excellent guide, Sayed. All worked out as described. The 3 day Red Sea extension was relaxing. Even the train journey, Cairo to Aswan, was a great part of the experience

I have just returned from...

31-Mar-2025

I have just returned from the most fabulous cycling holiday to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. It was without doubt the best holiday you could ever wish for. Excellent in every possible way. Thank you Exodus. I just can’t decide which holiday to do next.

We've been on several group...

21-Mar-2025

We've been on several group trips with Exodus to destinations such as India and Jordan where we'd rather let some one else do the organising. In all cases these trips have been excellent with wonderful guides and well designed itineraries. We have always returned with happy memories. In cases where things have gone wrong Exodus have never disappointed us with their service. During one case our plane was diverted at the start and we joined the tour 3 days late. But despite this Exodus organised everything, including a driver, required to let us catch up. Equally during the pandemic our trip was cancelled twice and in the end we decided to take a full refund which Exodus handled properly. Having just returned from our latest trip we're already considering where we can go next. It's possible that we wouldn't bother to use Exodus in Europe because we can organise everything ourselves but further afield we'll definitely be travelling with Exodus again.

Fabulous company and trip

06-Jan-2023

We went overland from Cape Town to Zimbabwe through Botswana and Namibia. What a fantastic trip. Our first time with Exodus although we have travelled extensively around the world. We would highly recommend this company for such a brilliant trip - we got everything and more all at a good price. Thanks to everyone involved. We are looking at our next trip!

I've done 8 trips in...

17-May-2023

I've done 8 trips in the last 14 years with Exodus, and have been rewarded with a 10% discount on all future bookings. I feel very confident that I'll receive pleasant, efficient service, and have the unusual holiday experience that I'm looking for each time. I've trekked to the top of snow-capped peaks, wild-camped in the desert, seen amazing spectacles of nature, visited 4 capital cities in a week, and learned about local culture and experienced local hospitality in a way that I simply wouldn't on a conventional holiday. The quality of the accommodation and guides can vary, but this is mainly down to cultural differences and things that Exodus can't control. I've only ever complained once, my complaint was taken seriously, and I was sent a discount voucher - you can't say fairer than that. I remain a loyal customer.
