The park is made up of rocky coastlines, fairy-tale forests, waterfalls and

calmer Knysna Lagoon. We have a bit more time to relax in town before leaving

for Oudtshoorn after lunch.

As we head inland and over a pass the landscape changes drastically and we

enter the Little Karoo, a much dryer and hotter region. Oudtshoorn itself

became famous thanks to the trade in Ostrich feathers and is still, today,

the ostrich capital of the world.

Our Guest House is situated out of town in the tranquil rural Karoo village

of De Rust.

Location: Cango Caves
Accommodation: House Martin Guest Lodge or similar
Accommodation Name: Housemartin Guest Lodge (or similar)

Cango Caves, an extensive complex of caverns with stalactites and

stalagmites. We then enjoy lunch at Buffelsdrift where will overlook a

waterhole that occasionally is visited by elephants, giraffe and springbok.

In the afternoon we visit the beautiful Meiringspoort Waterfall and enjoy a

reversed).

Location: Cape Town
Accommodation: Sweetest Guest House or similar
Accommodation Name: City Lodge Hotel Victoria & Alfred Waterfront (or similar)
Meals Included: Breakfast

Our next destination is South Africa’s famed wine region. The wine

industry, which dates back to the 17th Century and was heavily influenced by

French Huguenots, produces some of the best wines in the world. We will have

the opportunity to taste some of these wines before continuing to Cape Town,

the Mother City.

Day 10 : Two Days Exploring Cape Town, Table Mountain, The Cape Peninsula And Simonstown Penguins.
Location: Cape Town, Table Mountain, Robben Island, Chapman's Peak, Hout Bay, Llandudno
Accommodation: Sweetest Guest House or similar
Accommodation Name: City Lodge Hotel Victoria & Alfred Waterfront (or similar)
Meals Included: Breakfast

We spend the next two days in and around Cape Town, Africa's most exciting

city. Our activities in Cape Town will, to some extent, be dictated by the

weather as visits to the top of Table Mountain, which has its own

micro-climate, are determined by cloud cover and wind. Because of this,

often, temperamental weather, it is best not to pre-book the cable car but to

just buy tickets on the spot (not included) Those who are staying longer in

Cape Town post-tour may opt to visit Table Mountain later if the weather

looks as though it may be better then.

There is also the option of visiting Robben Island on one of the days,

however we recommend you pre-book Robben Island with us before the trip (but

pay the tour leader locally).

On one of the days we head down the Cape Peninsula. We follow the Atlantic

Seaboard past the areas of Camps Bay, Llandudno and Hout Bay to the Cape

Point via Chapman's Peak drive, if it is open. The highlight of the day is

our visit to the famous Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, which covers an

area of 7680 hectares. The reserve is home to eland, bontebok, grysbok,

springbok, wildebeest, baboon and ostrich. Rugged cliffs, unspoilt beaches,

shipwrecks and beautiful flora are the main features of the reserve. We will

go on a walk through the reserve for approximately two hours. We first take a

walk to the old lighthouse for the panoramic views, before following the

pathway to the new lighthouse which offer spectacular cliff views. We then

follow the downhill path to the Cape of Good Hope. Once we leave the park we

stop at the former Royal Navy base at Simonstown and take time to visit the

resident penguin colony at Boulders Beach.

Day 12 : End Cape Town.
Location: Cape Town
Meals Included: Breakfast

Our final day of the trip we have the option of doing a township tour,

strolling along the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront or exploring various other

parts of Cape Town. Those on group flights will be transferred to the airport

this afternoon for their flight home, those on a land-only basis the tour

officially ends today.

Food

All breakfasts included

The food you'll encounter on this trip is very similar to the kind of food
you'll be used to at home. There may be the opportunity to try some more
unusual meats such as ostrich, kudu or eland. There are also some options for
vegetarians.

The water provided on this trip is safe and clean drinking water, normally
coming from bore-holes. It is not bottled water, however. If you would rather
have bottled water then this will be at your expense, though we would
encourage you to make use of the safe drinking water provided as this helps
diminish plastic consumption.

Accommodation

We spend 11 nights in a range of hotels and guesthouses, each well located for our activities and to keep the drives between destinations relatively short. Properties are comfortable and many have fantastic views. The normal accommodations used on this trip can be found on the day-to-day itinerary; however, below are a couple of the notable places we stay.

De Rust: Housemartin Guest Lodge (nights 5-6)

In the small Karoo town of De Rust is the quaint Housemartin Guest Lodge. Owners Theresa and Jan personally welcome every Exodus group that comes to their home and they take great pride in making guests as comfortable as possible. The property has 12 rooms, each with a private veranda leading into the garden. There is also a swimming pool plus beautiful indoor and outdoor dining areas. The meals at the guest lodge are a particular highlight with seasonal ingredients sourced from local farms to create classic South African dishes.

Hermanus: Windsor Hotel (nights 7-8)

The 120-year-old Windsor Hotel in Hermanus sits opposite Walker Bay, one of the best whale-watching destinations in the world when southern right whales migrate to the bay to breed (July to November). Whale-watching is even possible from the comfort of the hotel restaurant. However, the location of the property is also ideal out of season with a central setting within town and quick access to the 7.5mi (12km) Hermanus Cliff Path.

Reviews from Travellers on this Tour

An outstanding trip

We were a big group of 15. Everyone got on well. Our leader, Petro Pretorius, was exceptional. Her knowledge was encyclopaedic and she was warm, open & resourceful. At all times we felt safe & confident in her care. She really went the extra mile for us. The food & wine was outstanding and also ridiculously cheap. Our itinerary was well thought out & enjoyable. Accommodation was always clean & well appointed. Accommodation hosts & local people were unfailingly friendly & helpful

Garden Route

I would wholeheartedly echo what Bev Scammel says so eloquently below. This was a fantastic trip with great guides, wonderful scenery, wildlife and we travelled with a lovely group of people. This was our first Exodus trip and I am certain it won't be our last.

One of our best holidays ever

The linear nature of the journey, flying into Port Elizabeth and out of Cape Town rather than in and out of Cape Town added outward time but importantly ruled out back-tracking which would have added travelling time unproductively and would have been boring. We were blessed with an exceptional tour leader (more later) and felt we enjoyed all events to the maximum possible with the best sub-contractors available. Long journeys were broken down into manageable chunks by inserting small stops and this allowed the driver recovery time and also added interest for the party. We were taken 'beneath the surface' on this trip with this leader and that added so much to our comprehension and enjoyment. The tour was well-paced with never less than two nights in one place so you did not feel you were 'living out of a suitcase' which would possibly have led to exhaustion, both physical and mental.

Wonderful South Africa!

South Africa is an incredibly beautiful country. This trip takes you along the Southern coast from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town, with a couple of inland stays. TIt's a well-planned itinerary with a lot to see, but not so packed that you feel rushed. The weather in the second half of November was pleasant, sometimes warm, with lots of sunshine. The scenery is stunning, so being in the van is no hardship, especially when broken up by scenic stops. There's a lot of variety on this trip - nature, landscapes, wildlife, culture, history, wine tasting. There's also a good choice of activities, so everyone can find something to suit their tastes, from walking/hiking to zip-lining to whale watching and para-gliding. The food is fresh and excellent – and inexpensive. We saw so much wildlife, both at Addo Elephant Park and Scotia safaris - elephants, rhinos, lions, hippos, giraffe, water buffalo, all sorts of ruminants. The bird life is also amazing, not to mention the cetaceans! Tsitsikamma National Park is a special place – remote and beautiful. The drive to the Meiringspoort waterfall is stunning – almost otherworldly in its beauty. The vibrant colours of the Knysna heads stay with you. Cape Town is a vibrant city with a lot to see and do, set against the majestic backdrop of Table Mountain. Overall, this is a trip that is well worth doing. It leaves you wanting more. A huge thanks to our tour guide, Marco Olivier, who went out of his way to accommodate us and make the trip a special one!

A really lovely trip

I enjoyed this holiday so much. The itinerary was very well balanced with a host of different activities and experiences. It was good to spend at least two nights in each location and have time to appreciate where we were staying. We have been on quite a few Exodus trips before, but this was one of the best. Some of the accommodation was very good indeed, notably the Martin House guest lodge in De Rust and the apartments in Hermanus.

Excellent trip

This was an incredible trip. Beautiful places we visited. The game drives were amazing saw so many beautiful animals. Our group was lovely and Petro our tour guide was amazing, she was so welcoming and organised everything perfectly. Would highly recommended this trip. I plan to come back South Africa has a place in my heart now.

Cape Town and the Garden Route

A highly enjoyable tour of the beautiful Garden Route in South Africa culminating in the cosmopolitan hub of Cape Town bestraddled by the breathtaking vistas of Table Mountain, Lions Head. A wonderful adventure where game animals such as lions, rhinos, elephants, buffalos, warthogs, girraffes, zebras etc as well as ostritches, whales and penguins can be seen up close and personal and where beautiful forests, gorges, mountains, waterfalls, deserts, caves can be seen in all their glory. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who may be interested in visiting South Africa as this tour is so diverse and varied and gives the "adventurer" a stunning glimpse of this beautiful Rainbow nation.

Enjoyed every minute!

The itinerary for this trip gives a good variety of activities at a reasonably relaxed pace. We stayed in each accommodation for a minimum of 2 nights which meant there wasn't too much packing/unpacking.

Cape Town and Garden Route

What a fantastic trip. Lots to see, scenery, views, birds & animals. The food and weather were excellent too. Accommodation was comfortable, minibus occasionally was a bit bumpy but we were busy taking in all the sights to notice.

Garden Route tour

The usual well-planned and well-organised Exodus trip. A varied and interesting tour in a beautiful country with amazing flora, fauna and spectacular scenery. The only disappointment for me was that in the trip notes, it stated it would be possible to visit a township on the morning before returning to the UK. The trip leader insisted this was not possible. The visit was arranged on the previous afternoon but by then I had already planned to do something else. This was a minor hiccup as I know from my many previous Exodus trips that a degree of flexibility is to be expected.Perhaps this needs amending in the notes to avoid misunderstandings.
