09-Feb-2019

This was our 12th cycle trip with Explore and our 3rd one in France with Andrew being our tour leader. We were so pleased when we discovered Andrew was leading it. He is the best tour guide we have ever had on all our trips. He is very friendly, organised & provides all the group with individual information packs which include maps for everyday, brochures on all the sites we visit & a general information booklet on everything we need to know about the area, along with how far we cycle each day, climbs etc.. Cycling along the Loire valley was amazing with the scenery changing each day. Visiting all the Chateaus were great and especially loved Chenonceaux & the wine caves. Of the places we visited our highlight was the gardens at Villandry. We also loved the fact we were lucky enough to cycle past the Sunflower fields and even in August we saw a few fields where they were all in full flower. The bikes were excellent and well looked after, loved the fact we maily cycled on very quite back roads. Stopped at great local places alone the way for coffee, wine, ice cream etc. Stopped at local stores to pick up our supplies for a picnic lunch and always stopped in amazing unspolited places off the beaten track. Would never know about these places if it was not for Andrew taking us there. The cycling was quite easy with some hill climbs. Loved the fact this tour did offer some optional rides, which all our group decided to do. Our group was very small, only 4 of us in total (think some people had to pull out at the last minute). Have never been on an explore holiday with such small numbers (pleased it was not cancelled). The group was lovely & we allt on very well. The fact the group was so small made it very flexible and we were able to stay longer in some places and leave the hotel a bit later if we wanted to. The hotels were all in excellent locations and of aod standard, some better than others. It was very hot in August and some did not have air con but all provided fans. The best hotel was at Azay le Rideau (converted school house) with a small lovely garden where we all sat for pre dinner drinks and nibbles. The hotel did not have a bar, but had a fridge where they were more than happy for us to store our wine. Andrew is very knowledgeable about the area and all things French, there was not one question we asked him that is did not know the answer to.
