Discover the historic port town of Kyrenia on today's walks through the Old Town, Kyrenia Castle and the nearby town of Lapta. Visit Kyrenia's ancient harbourfront and stroll the seaside, witness to millennia of maritime trade.

ACTIVITY: Travel along a beautiful stretch of coastline in the town of Lapta. Regarded as one of the oldest settlements in Cyprus, today the seaside is a vibrant tourist area, with fantastic views of the mountains to the sea.

ACTIVITY: Visit the 16th-century Kyrenia Castle and uncover its history, first built by the Byzantines then occupied by Romans, the Crusaders and Ottomans. Stroll down to the harbourfront and enjoy picturesque views of the sea. Continue to the Old Town, once protected by stone fortifications.

Travel east to the village of Esentepe, where few tourists visit and the local way of life moves at its own pace. With scenic trails through forested areas, enjoy a guided walk that ends at Antiphonitis Church, built as a monastery in the 12th century.

ACTIVITY: Begin today's walk in the village of Esentepe. Follow abandoned farming and forestry tracks as we make our way through the countryside. Keep your eyes peeled for sightings of local birds, butterflies and lizards. End at the Byzantine-era Antiphonitis Church, part of a former monastery. Elevation change: +/- 436m

Visit Incircli Cave, the largest in Cyprus, rich with folklore and intricate rock formations. Continue to Kantara Castle, the first of two Crusader castle ruins we will explore this week. Take a scenic walk down to the beach and enjoy free time for a swim.

ACTIVITY: Named after the fig tree at the entrance of the cave, head down into a 100m long passage to see the largest cave in Cyprus, a naturally formed gypsum cave at the foot of the Besparmak Mountains. Admire its beautiful collection of stalactites and stalagmites.

ACTIVITY: Built with granite and sandstone, Kantara Castle takes its name from the Arabic for 'bridge' - a fitting description of its strategic location between the mountains and the sea.

ACTIVITY: Head down the path towards Kaplica Beach and enjoy some free time for swimming. Elevation change: + 50m / -450m

Climb up to the ruins of St. Hilarion Castle, a majestic maze of stone walls with a very famous lookout point - it's said that Walt Disney took inspiration for one of his fairytale castles here. Continue to Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus. Wander the Old Town and see the striking Selimiye Mosque and Arab Ahmet quarter. Visit a bakery and observe how traditional foods, such as lahmacun (dough topped with minced meat) and olive breads are made.

ACTIVITY: Learn about the castle's incredible history as you climb nearly 800 steps to reach the Byzantine fortress' awe-inspiring lookouts. Perched on top of a mountain range, St. Hilarion is the best-preserved of the country's Crusader castle ruins, with incredible views that stretch to Turkey's Taurus Mountains on a clear day.

ACTIVITY: Visit the world's last divided capital city and explore its fascinating streets with your local guide. Stroll through the Old Town and opt to do some shopping. Continue to Selimiye Mosque, the city's most prominent landmark, and the historic Arab Ahmet neighbourhood.

Visit the ruins of Soli, one of the ten ancient kingdoms of Cyprus. Walk the steps of its Roman amphitheatre and admire its beautiful floor mosaics, dating back to the 6th century. Continue to the village of Lefke by hiking through a fertile valley filled with citrus trees.

ACTIVITY: Explore the ancient city of Soli, whose foundation is attributed to the Greek philosopher Solon. Take in its majestic amphitheatre, and see the ruins of St. Auxibus Basilica with its well-preserved mosaics.

ACTIVITY: Trek the the village of Lefke, once a prosperous copper mining town. Travel through the valley and into the countryside, dotted with fragrant citrus groves. Elevation change: +/- 263m
